just love Spotify. I'm a premium member since 2009 and don't regret it. Changed the way I listen to music. It could be easier/more convenient to discover new music, but I hope the new app platform will change this.

I can't believe it. I was in Stockholm when Spotify launched and I really enjoyed using it when I was living in Berlin, Germany. Now it is here in the US and I got to try it out through Klout. And now I am trying to use it as often as possible. But, alas, I tend to listen to podcasts these days -- and NPR -- way more than music. The best thing about this service starting abroad is that there are loads of global music and all king of British and European pop hits that I thought I would need to back to Europe to hear. So, with Spotify, I feel like I am back over in Euroville. I am a paid user these days.

The kitchen I volunteer at plays Spotify over the kitchen's sound system and was running Pandora before. The chef really loves it. So, I tried it out and I really like it because it allows me to extend on the song list that I already had from the CDs I burned years ago. It almost seems like my music love stopped in the 80s. Anyway, I really loved with TuneUp did for my old music, but Spotify is how I find my new music, and it seems to have everything, too. There was this band in the UK I liked called CUD and I couldn't find it until I looked for it on Spotify. Very cool. It rewards curiosity and serendipity.

Jazzica, in an earlier comment stated:

"Reading these reviews I get the impression that NO ONE knows or even thinks about where this music comes from."

I'm not exactly sure what the point of this comment is. If artists are not making any money from Spotify, then why is it being granted legal licenses to stream the music? What exactly is the business model of Spotify, and if the model isn't working for the record companies or the artists, then why don't you stop doing business with it?

It seems like you're complaining because Spotify isn't the cash cow you though it would be, or someone told you it would be. Well, then change the relationship. Charge them more money for licenses. Make them pay more for each song played/streamed. Put them out of business. I don't care. It's not the consumer's problem. That is an issue between you and them.

We use the service the way we see fit, not the way you expect us to or tell us to. If that's unacceptable, then pull your music from the service. I don't see what the problem is here or what we as consumers have to do with it.

I buy plenty of music from iTunes and Amazon even though I might use a service like Spotify to primarily listen to music, like the radio. That's my choice. If that's bad for you, then put pressure on Spotify to change how the service works. Then I'll decide whether I want to continue using Spotify at all. See how that works? It's an open market, where people make choices. That's Capitalism 101.

If you use Google, you can find reams of articles about this business model. It is based on the Wall Street model.
Record companies have what is known as "copyright protection" as corporate entities.

Musicians have what is known as "publishing rights" as far as their own compositions go, if they decide to fight for them. Not all musicians are up to filling out the volume of paperwork to keep their publishing (in the US, through ASCAP or BMI). Publishing rights amount to about to a fraction of what the copyright-holders receive.

I, however, DO the paperwork, and AM a publishing entity. I ALSO OWN my own label, and the copyright, with 35 CDs released on it. I've also recorded for Timeless, Concord, Fantasy, Black Lion, Maxjazz, and more. Those labels retain the copyright.

I DO get paid quite well from iTunes. Rhapsody is becoming better at paying the publishing rights. There are MANY thousands of sites that pay. But I still feel that, if you can go to the artist's web site and buy directly from them, you are supporting the artist and not a corporation. Even if they are people too.

My business model is much closer than yours to the Ayn Rand Objectivist model of Capitalism (which I despise). Pay the creator FIRST.

I respect your argument. I just don't think the playing field is level, yet. This is an entirely NEW model for music distribution, and has not been properly regulated, yet. Oh, those pesky regulations!

Capitalism 101. It seems to work SO WELL for ALL of the people. Particularly the corporate people.

Again, I DO respect your argument. Merry Christmas.

Slows the computer considerably (more so than iTunes). Shoves ads in my face. The "share to…" quasi-feature inadvertently dismisses my post (while being composed). Conclusion: don't tinker with code if you've no conception of how software is written.

Hey, Spotify. Please post some release notes so we can know things like, for example, what's changed that makes v0.8.0.1035 over twice the size (56MB) as month-old v0.6.5.2 (24MB).

Figured out this newly added ~35MB library (of unknown purpose) is what caused the significant size increase:

From Hotcakes: "Lady Gaga is one of the most popular recording artists of the last ten years, and it’s easy to picture her “Poker Face” track becoming one of the most popular tracks on the Spotify service. And it is – but despite getting one million plays in five months, Gaga only received $167 in royalties. As you can imagine, she would’ve made hundreds of thousands, had those plays been files bought off iTunes. Only time will tell, as some artists are removing their music entirely, while some of the biggest are soldiering on, their consent a matter of debate."

From Spotify: "We respect creativity and believe in fairly compensating artists for their work. We've cleared the rights to use the music you'll listen to in Spotify."

From me: I'm a well known musician who's been at it for 50 years and has over 70 albums on iTunes. Take it from me, I haven't seen ONE CENT from Spotify.

I was one of the co-founders of a digital distribution service and have seen this as well. We would distribute tens of thousands of songs that would receive a lot of play outs but generate hardly any revenue at all. It's a shame though, the Spotify product is nicely built and the people behind it are awesome but it will take a long time before artists will accept that there isn't any money to be made.

I'm not totally sure of what Spotify and their system are trying to achieve, since reading what appears here has me sure I want nothing to do with it (even Pandora is too mainstream for my eclectic international tastes). But the comments I see appearing on this subject are telling me that there are people here who do not know the recording industry realities, or even the difference between just two types of royalty systems.
I'm looking forward to the day when what happened to Douglas Adams' Sirius Cybernetics Corp., happens to the recording industry (and not just the ones of the USA).

Aikousha, re Douglas Adams' Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. You got it. The way things are shaping up, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Vogons arrive, and soon.

Meanwhile, I'm off to have a Pan-Galactic Gargle-Blaster or three, and visit the Mexamegallon Museum of Diseased Imaginings. Keep on smilin'!
