PhotoStickies

03 March 2020

Image, slideshow, wallpaper viewer, and recorder.

Overview

PhotoStickies puts all your favorite pictures on your desktop as stickies, floating or even borderless. Sticky pictures may reside on your computer, or on the Internet. It displays live Web cams on your desktop, updates them automatically, and even records them like a VCR.

What you can do with PhotoStickies:

  • Watch your favorite Webcams right on your desktop, keep an eye on the traffic or a weather cam.
  • Place your children, on your desktop, your house, your boat, or your nuclear satellite.
  • Use live Web cams as your living desktop picture, such as the Eiffel Tower or New York City, 5th Avenue.

What's new in PhotoStickies

Version 6.0:

This release brings some revisions to the interface, now sporting a dark theme. Some menus have been simplified and shortcuts added. You can now drag bookmarks or links on PhotoStickies' icon to open them. Recording and viewing video streams, even local streams from connected cameras, is now supported. It is also a fully 64-bit, notarized application, compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina, using modern frameworks for better performance and reliability.

Note: Starting with this release PhotoStickies now requires a minimum of OS X Yosemite.

New
  • Links and bookmarks can now be dropped on the PhotoStickies' icon or directly opened from other applications, e.g., the Finder.
  • Added possibility to view and record local and remote videos and live streams, e.g., m3u8. Note, image filtering isn't supported and not all streams or videos support recording time ranges.
  • Added command File > Open Camera to view and record streams from connected cameras. Note: Image filtering cannot be done on the streams being recorded.
  • Animated GIFs are now supported. Note: Image filtering cannot be done on them.
  • Added a shortcut for the Control > Wait command. Also added shortcuts in the Control menu for Start All, Wait For All, and Stop All when holding the Option key.
  • Added command Show in Finder to the File and contextual menu.
  • Added a Website field to the Info dialog. The URL can be opened via the @ button.
  • The Info, Processes, and Open Location dialogs now use a dark theme.
Improved
  • Simplified the Display, Control, and Window menus. Revised the shortcut of Control > Start and added some alternate menu items to these menus, accessible when using the Shift and Option modifier keys.
  • Scroll wheel and trackpad gestures now can be used to go to previous or next frames of slideshows, webcam replays, and videos
  • Moved Copy Filters and Paste Filters to the Edit menu.
  • Image-based views are now layer-based and therefore animating and fading requires up to 50% less CPU time.
  • Filtered webcams are now recorded as PNG images instead of TIFF.
  • Improved handling of ⌘W and ⌘M shortcuts, e.g., when used in the Inspector or Open Location panel.
  • Copying images and webcams is now more reliable.
  • Improved overall performance and reliability.
  • Karelia's LetsMove framework is used to install PhotoStickies in the Applications folder on demand when the application is launched from another location.
Fixed
  • Fixed an issue where Help > Contact didn't use the default email application.
  • Fixed an issue where pressing the ↩ key in the Open Location panel didn't open the location.
  • Fixed an issue where saved states could not be removed.
  • Fixed some display artifacts in the Preferences panel.
  • Fixed some issues with multi-threading.

Fantastic free app that does exactly what it's supposed to. I need to keep multiple images on screen at once daily, this app helps me organise my screen estate much better than preview, since all images open frameless, they can even float in front of every other app in use. Another great feature is the ability to save your opened images in a "set", so you can save and load presets for whatever project you're working on. My only gripe with it is that you can't resize or rotate images using the mouse. It works through hotkeys but it would be much more convenient to through an interactive "hot-corner" on each image.

It's very possible that I'm simply doing something wrong, but even when I have photos on the "back" level, they still cover my desktop icons. I'm trying to use the program as a wallpaper, and it's not very useful when it covers everything on my desktop.

Finally i found an application for having mini slideshows on my desktop. I tried and bought many applications, but this one is the best so far. I like in particular: It shows pictures in subdirectories, you can have several instances, and more importantly is that it does not take much resources!

Another way-cool freebie from Devon Technologies. I use this all the time, to put Web cams from around the world on my desktop, and to change desktop pictures with more control and horsepower than what's built-in to System Preferences. I'm wondering if this update isn't to make it ready for Lion, since they just updated DevonThink and Note for that.

Great app for viewing images without any border. Wish you could resize by dragging corner, but keyboard controls + - do work fine for this so I really can't complain. Lots of options like transparency and float levels add to the fun. Runs so well on my old, legacy iMac that it is now my default viewer. Nice to see that Devon keeps updating the web-cams too. Well worth the twelve bucks.

Tried it and honestly have to say I found Photo Desktop to be a much better (and free) alternative. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19104 The only thing PhotoStickies offers over Photo Desktop is webcam support.

This is a very nice app for making a desktop picture collage. Was free, but now costs $12. It would have been better priced at about $9. I paid for it, though, because there's no alternative app, or is there?

Really fine piece of work! No need to fire up XDarwin to launch gqview or some other X-based picture viewer. And it's free! Thanks.

I am digging this fine piece of work. It's one of the best download surprises I've had. Oh yeah, and it's only like... free! Way to go.

Cool freeware to showcase OS 10. The fade option, alone, is terrific. Keep up the cool work.
