EyeTV seems to be available in V 3.6.4. At least the autoupdate function installed this version.

Enjoy, Holger

Overall this is a great program for time-shifting TV shows and not having to worry about when they actually air. I use it to record several series and can simply watch them whenever I like. I rarely watch live TV anymore.

The only issue I have with it is that when converting to iTunes the audio frequently ends up out-of-sync. It's a slow creep that builds up over the video -- everything's fine at the start of the show, and by the end the audio can be almost a second off -- almost like watching a bad dub.

The only other issue is that even the "fine" editing is a bit rough, so if I want to clean up a recording and remove commercials I end up having to snip it just a bit sooner or later than I'd like to. Also, there is sometimes weirdness in the audio, where I clip out a commercial, but the video retains a random splurt of sound from the clipped part, that plays right at the point of the edit. They might have better luck if there were some way to kick it over to Quicktime for editing. Ah well -- It's not like I'm preserving these for posterity; if I want flawless I can buy a DVD.

I experience frequent "no signal" messages when changing channels - there is nothing wrong with the signal, and restarting EyeTV helps for a while but this also means that recording TV from different channels often leaves me with failed 0 sec recordings. However it is still the best game in town.

Tip (for Germany and maybe other countries): if you don't want to pay for the tvtv programming guide then set the channels to use DVB (the signal contains a programming guide). You need to go to the channels section and set it for each channel.

Software is unstable and thus unreliable for recording and seeking back and forth.
Switching between programs can make EyeTV crash. I even suspect it to give kernel panics now and then.

EyeTV has been a great product and slowly evolving/updating since I had my first device back around 2003. I've owned about 8 of their devices since then including the EyeTV software back to the original version.

This EyeTV software has SLOWLY addressed most issues. They're not quick to fix everything, but I understand slowing down the update process so that more problems aren't created than are fixed.

Recently, I owned both the latest Hybrid and EyeTV One device. They failed in many regards in conjunction with the EyeTV software. It is difficult to talk about the software alone, since it has to be used in conjunction with one of many hardware choices to utilize all the features. The tuning, automated recording, and unexpected disconnecting of the devices when used with EyeTV caused many failed recordings.

Since I had a long history with them in the past, I decided to try their dual-network tuner produced by Silicon Dust, the HDHomeRun. It has worked flawlessly for me - better than any of the other hardware I have owned from ElGato. So far, I only had one tuning issue with this device in conjunction with the EyeTV software. Though a subsequent update to the EyeTV software took care of the issue.

It's got it's quirks, but is the only PVR type software for the Mac that has stood the test of time and is aesthetically Mac-like.

I could have written this review myself! lol.
I too have been using the dual tuner HD HomeRun and am over the moon about it.
Been using their software for around 10 years as well and although there are glitches here and there I'm overall very pleased.
Another thing I noticed that was very cool, you can watch the recordings in media centers like Plex and XBMC.
Cheers!

Elgato say (not very helpfully) "improved HDMI display support".

Well, even with 3.6.1 I frequently get loss of audio synchronisation and video skipping when using HDMI 1.3 or 1.4 leads combined with Optical Audio Out.

Home networks between family users with Elgato EyeTV on their Macs fail. No amount of re-installing after "Reporter" clears this network issues. Eye Connect is hopelessly flawed.

I purchased an EyeTV Hybrid... I easily installed the software using the intuitive setup wizard. I let the auto channel detector run it's process... I watched TV on my Mac... that's it. I've been watching and recording shows on my Mac for a year now without any of the issues mentioned on MacUpdate. So far the software/hardware just work so I don't, but that's a good thing, right? I've used the A/V adapter cables to import video from VHS and it works flawlessly. To all who are debating an EyeTV purchase... buy it, you won't regret it. Take it from someone who has tested every aspect of the system.

Impersonal and poor customer support. Ambiguous preference features and no initiative in product development.

Elgato has no serious competitor, at least with its increasingly sparse "traditional" EyeTV product line and languished development. They haven't done anything I've cared about for years, e.g. Game Capture HD… meh.

In version 3.5.3 whenever I move a window, its size shrinks to "Small Size". I hope this is a bug and not a feature, since it is a huge usability problem (and I'm already considering restoring the previous version).

If you ever get the famous "USB 1.1 connection" alert on any version of this software, especially with EyeTV Hybrid USB stick (the one with digital free air): Plug the device to a dedicated USB port (not to hub) ideally to one at back of your mac, near to hot fans. Leave it plugged for 1-2 hours, let it warm itself. USB 1.1 connection issue magically disappears.
Do NOT put anything which isn't in food standard into kitchen aperture.

To all EyeTV Hybrid users:

There is a widespread problem with the device being only recognized as being on a USB1 port or not at all - the bizarre solution is to heat up the EyeTV Hybrid for 2 min and then plug it in (don't make it too hot or the plastic will melt). See http://forums.elgato.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=527&start=25 for details

I was ready to throw mine away - now it's working again.

I've had the same problem for a while, it took me a month to get the "clue", "the warm-up factor" wich I use to achieve by "searching new channels in analog" using youtube app, once it warm and it was recognized I could use it for months simply without rebooting my macmini, (logout didn't matter) but also every reboot would reqiure a "warm-up" session, and it worked like this for about another six/seven months and then it just died, (the tuner) no more warming it for 2-3-4-5 etc. etc. minutes, that was an USB dual tuner analogic/digital terrestrial, it lasted about two years ;
So I bought an USB dual digital, beginning of summer 2010, (end of May) in september it started again with the infamous, "connect the device to an USB2 port............", at the moment I just disconnect and riconnect the device to the same port, but "it all started this way".
Now EyeTV is definitely the best TV SW for mac, no chance for the others, but, I wish I could say the same about the HW they sell.

Don't know what it is but I got stuttering on my iMac 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM, and I'm still getting it on my new iMac 2.8 GHz i7 with 8 GB RAM. It doesn't matter whether I'm recording or playing back, and it's absolutely frustrating.

There's still this bug with the Eye-TV Quicktime plug-in installed into the main library folder which causes a green poster frame for MP4 files in the Finder and in iWeb! :-(
Only when you delete this plug-in the problem is solved, but Eye-TV keeps on putting in it back in by relaunching the app.

The one thing that's been driving me nuts with EyeTV 3.0.1 is the constant prompts to authenticate as an administrator (I run EyeTV from a standard account, as I do with all apps).

I tried changing permissions on the com.elgato.* prefs files, and on a few other files I found in the Application Support folder, but with no luck. I contacted Elgato's tech support, and received the following answer:

Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems.

We are aware of a problem with non-admin accounts and EyeTV 3.0.1. There is a problem with saving a setting to our global preference when quitting out of EyeTV. Hopefully our Engineers will fix the problem soon.

Some of my customers have been able to click Cancel and bypass the admin password entry. Another changed permissions for ~/Library/Preferences so the non-admin accounts had Read/Write permissions.
