The latest test results on the site posted below by Mcr are over two years old (July 2014).
For more recent results (March 2016) look here: http://goo.gl/rvzQxa

The testing was done by this site: http://goo.gl/naqw0F
That site has a LOT of useful test results, including spam detection.
NOTE: Not all software tested is Mac software, so be mindful of that.

Does anyone else find it suspicious/alarming that only 4 out of the 12 antivirus companies tested in 2016 are from the USA? https://goo.gl/bhOauU

Detailed malware detection test results are regularly posted here for nearly 2 dozen products, free and paid: http://securityspread.com/detection-rate-results/ These are very detailed, showing EXACTLY by name for each malware/virus if it is detected or not, for each product, then products are ranked 95%, 85%, 75% etc based on detection rates. Historical results are maintained so you can compare over time, and you do see product results change with each test (done every month to every 3 months depending on whether there are any new reported malware in the field, and a sample can be obtained for testing). I've done a bit of research on the site and tester, to make sure it was not one of those 'sponsored' sites by a vendor that are made to appear as objective, neutral reviews. The fact that the product rankings change constantly AND that the results are very specific and listed in detail, further support that this site and the tester are very objective. In fact this is exactly the kind of site and test results, that vendors DON'T want you to see, even the ones that do well on the test (because no product is 100%). I am posting this to support the Mac Community. When we are all better informed when it comes to this important area of security in this day of cyber threats, we all benefit. Education and information is the best defense, (as with so many things in life). For example, if someone uses MacKeeper because they don't know better, then in some ways the community failed for not getting the word out. If after doing some research and being advised not to use MacKeeper, someone still chooses to do so, then you can't help that, but hopefully it wasn't because there wasn't information available. My aim is not to support or dissuade anyone about a particular product, you pick / use or don't use whatever product you want, and live with the consequences, just remember that your decision can effect others, by virtue of whether you are part of stopping the spread, or being a part of it. I highly recommend you don't just look at the current results, but look at the past ones as well. You WILL see trends, with some products consistently doing well and others not so much, and some moving up and down. Remember, an A/V product rests on two main things, the scanning engine AND the malware database. A great engine can be crippled if the database is not updated in a timely manner. Conversely, a vendor that does maintain a current database might still not be effective if the program itself is buggy. This site only ONLY addresses virus detection results, it does not in general make any conclusions or post results regarding performance, installation, support, UI, etc.

I've always been happy with NAV either on my PC and now on my Mac. The only problem seems to be the long time a full scan takes. And about system speed, it's great compared to other AVs on the market. By the way, if you search the net, you might find much more cheaper prices for this software.

Nowadays there's a good choice of antivirus software available for the Mac. Many of them are Free. They do just as a good job at detecting viruses as Norton AV does, and don't invade your HD with useless files. Stay away from this!

Active scanning is STILL a problem on Mac. Not specific to Norton AntiVirus...but to ANY antivirus. Disable in production environments, or users will hunt you down, shoot you in the head and again in the chest and drop your limp body into the sea. Don Montalvo, TX

I purchased NAV 11 back in 2008. I have done yearly subscription updates (like an idiot) since then. I had a HD failure and decided to take the opportunity to do a complete reinstall on my mac. When I got to NAV I discovered that the original (last downloaded) installer does not work with 10.6 even with Rosetta installed. So I contacted Symantec for assistance. Big Mistake!!! The guy began by explaining that the "software" only last 1 year. OK I get that the subscription is only good for a year but I am not talking about the subscription. I need to install the software as I am not going to purchase a new sub unless I know it I can install the software. So I ask if I am I supposed to re purchase the entire product if my system fails 13 months after I purchase the orig even though it's the same version? According to the NAV guy yes you are. He went on to explain that because it is security software it's only good a year??? I guess even if we are still selling the same version! I was well aware I would have to purchase a new subscription but I am not going to keep dropping nickels in the norton rip off machine.

I use Norton Anti-Virus as part of Norton Internet Security for Mac. I am posting a review here because Norton Internet Security for Mac doesn't seem to be on Macupdate. I really don't understand the negative reviews. This program works great! There is no slowing of my system at all. I am fairly new to the mac and have a new macbook pro. I know there is not supposed to be any viruses on the mac but I was concerned about all types of threats not just viruses and NIS for mac fits the bill perfectly. I tried Virusbarrier x6 by Intego and it noticeably slowed my system down unless I didn't run it live. If you don't run it live, what's the point. NIS is also very customizable as well.

I posted a positive feedback on another download site: "If you have really rewritten it and it really does scans for web threats too, why not provide a free trial so people who have your bad image in mind may change their minds after testing?" Sounds simple yes? Believe or not, some official guy, very high official replied and he said it makes sense and they will try to provide a trial. 1-2 YEARS ago. Yes, Mac security threats are becoming very big deal, the simple trojan stuff already out there. Issue is, do you want to pay $43 to test a product? Every single Antivirus has a trial because of a basic reason: They won't work perfectly on every system out there. It is a technical issue based on the "ring" they run and the low level routines they use. Even "Intego" who ships equally expensive products with expensive updates has decency to provide free trials for their every single product. If you have a specific threat, for example some "click on everything and run" type of user, I suggest every other product which has some testing ability.

It's incredible that for as long as everyone has known Apple was developing OS X 10.6 that Norton has not updated their virus application to support it. I would recommend that everyone switch to Virus Barrier X5 which has been updated.

LIVEUPDATE & AUTO-PROTECT NO LONGER WORK IN 10.5.7!!! Since I updated to Mac OS 10.5.7 on my iMac and my MacBook, the Auto-Protect and LiveUpdate components of Norton Antivirus 11 (NAV) no longer work. LiveUpdate automatically or manually checks for and downloads new virus definition files and updates for all the components of NAV. Auto-Protect automatically scans my system in the background looking for viruses when I am on the Internet, downloading email, or using any kind of external disk. With those two components dead, Norton Antivirus 11 is now COMPLETELY USELESS. And I cannot download a fix because the utility that downloads such things is what needs to be fixed! Nor can I find a fix to download from the Norton or Symantec websites, which are possibly the worst customer support websites in the software industry. Here are the two alert notifications NAV gave after I tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall it: "Norton AntiVirus Error. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not continue. Please run LiveUpdate or reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart. (Code: 10)" "System extension cannot be used. The system extension "/Library/Application Support/Symantec/AntiVirus/NortonAutoProtect.bundle/Contents/Resources/SymApComm.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update." Systems Info: Late 2006 Intel Core2Duo 2.16 GHz 20" iMac with 2 GB RAM, and Late 2008 Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHz Unibody MacBook with 4 GB RAM, both now running OS 10.5.7.

Updated to 11.0 when renewing subscription and ALL applications including finder have ground to a near STANDSTILL! I turned off auto protect and anything not related to outgoing email and got the same thing. Then I ran the UNINSTALL program in the Symantec folder and everything is running faster than it ever has before. Now I need to find some other APP to protect my hapless PC using clients. Hopefully I can find one that doesn't grind everything to a halt. Sorry I wasted my money on NAV. again...

How about fixing NAV 10. Somewhere between original NAV 10 release and v.10.1.2, the application became more buggy, slow and prone to paralyzing Tiger with auto-protection on.

At least it works and find virii. It is not always the case with VirusBarrier (X.4 or X.5) : I have a folder full of (win/macro) virii : NAV 11 found them all, while VB only found 5 of 21. The GUI is quite simple and very easy to use. So far, I didn't got any stability problem nor slowdown. Sure, it's not as fast as VB to scan a full disk, but really, how often shall we do that ? Scanning the home directory is enough in most cases.

I have had Norton for years and with Tiger it takes hours to scan the drive. I ‘switched' to VirusBarrier, drive is scanned in minutes! Yes I called Symantec and the man from India wanted to have remote access to my computer-NO WAY.
