Lets face it, we are living in a world full of criminal behavior, much of the activity takes place on the internet. Therefore, we all **should** be concerned with security and making it a priority before you are the victim.

For me security starts with securing my computers, using difficult passwords, and not saving my credit card information on any web site if possible. I've been using the default Mac firewall PF for a long time. However, I have found it difficult to make changes to because you need to use the terminal and you can easily mess up your configuration making it impossible to get onto your WAN or LAN.

I just stumbled onto Murus and it's brother Vallum and suddenly making those necessary changes became simple.. After using Murus for an hour I purchased Murus Pro which comes with Vallum and I will never leave my computer alone without it. With Vallum I no longer needed Little Snitch, which is another great application but it would be redundant running little Snitch along with Vallum. Murus and Vallum work together beautifully because they are develop by the same developers.

****** Need Security? Purchase Murus Pro, it makes configuring your firewall a breeze ******

I am not affiliated with Murus or Vallum developers, just a thrilled user of Murus and Vallum.

After many years of using Little Snitch, and other stuff, on and off, I gave Murus a try out, but liked it enough to buy the Pro version with the Vallum companion app. I gave up on Little Snitch as it's had too many stability issues over the years (causing kernel panics nonetheless), and it's dialogues just get so tedious to deal with it becomes a security liability as you tend to just dismiss stuff so you can continue working. Setting up Murus is easy, with different levels according to needs and ability. The companion app Vallum is also very easy to set up, and much more friendly to deal with blocking/allow dialogues. So far I'm very impressed with the whole package, and it's well worth the fee (just for once something that's been priced reasonably for the average user to justify buying). Worth considering if your looking for added security.

I’m unaware of LS having any stability issues or causing kernel panics in recent years. Maybe in older versions, though I can’t recall for certain.

You sure it’s not your processor causing the issues?
I had daily kernel panics and overheating until Crapple FINALLY replaced my Mac with a brand new one. that was almost a year and a half ago and since then I think I’ve only had two.

It’s hard to believe Murus could be easier to use than LS, because the screenshot alone makes me say HOLY #*&%!

It looks a LOT more complicated than LS, and I haven’t been able to overlook the screenshots long enough to try it out - It looks like it’d be an exasperating experience.

I’ve used LS for years and rarely have trouble with it not functioning as expected. Even though I have an extensive set of rules, the continual pestering of the permission windows does get irksome at times, and it could use more features.

Yes, I'm sure it's not my machine. The process is simple for me, it's panic'ed with LS installed and doesn't without it - it has been reproducible. Otherwise I rarely see kernel panics.

You only have to read the release notes that are published, I counted 7 instances of kernel panic causing bugs being fixed since v3.0 came out - I've been using LS since the late 90's and have seen KPs occurring regularly over the years on the five or six different machines I've use it on it that time when using LS (granted sometimes other stuff has caused it, but not very often).

I can only comment on my own experiences with software. I'm sure there's plenty out there that have no such issues.

In use Murus has not been any harder house than LS. It is only a front-end for the software built-in to macOSX anyway, so is not to intrusive to the system, and probably less likely to cause issues. You could, if you so wished, do the same task from Terminal.

As I say, I can only comment based on my own experiences with using hardware and software.

I agree, too many issues with Little Snitch, used to be fabulous. I alsoI switched to Murus Pro and Vallum, they work well together, plus you get the benefit of a GUI PF Firewall. I feel horrible because I have been a very loyal user of Objective's software for years and gave up both Little Snitch and LaunchBar in the past 6 months. I've used both Little Snitch & Launchbar for several years, just got tired of the ignored bugs, and the longtime lags using LaunchBar.

What sort of issues were you having with LS that Murus resolves?
I can think of a few things I'd improve with LS, but I'm not aware of any actual bugs. And I have no K-panics caused by it.

I haven't seen any actual proof here that LS caused people's K-panics.
I could have blamed mine on it, but it was a defective computer not defective software that caused it.

I need more attestation that Murus is better and about as simple as LS before I try it again.

I also tried LB, but it had far too many options when all I wanted was a simple, but better Spotlight replacement. Someone suggested Alfred, but I didn't care for it either.

Didn't mean to say "again," because I haven't tried Murus at all yet.

It would be enormously helpful if MU carried screen shots of the various Murus products so we could see what they actually do (the screenshot on the developer's site is too small to be legible).

If using an extension like HoverSee (Safari) it's handy for zooming images (to varying degrees) on Murus site pages.

I love this program. After struggling (and failing) to get Fail2Ban to work, I found Murus and bought the Pro version immediately after trying out the trial version I use Murus to ban IPs from China, Russia, and other countries where bots run amuck trying to brute force your machine. Combine it with Murus Logs Visualizer and you'll have a great tool for seeing at a glance who is banging on your ports, and then permanently banning them with a couple of clicks. Note that academic users can purchase this product for a discount directly from the Murus website. For my wishlist: I would love it if Murus would add a feature that lets you ban an entire subnet with a click, instead of just a single IP address. You see too many hackers changing IP addresses during an attack in an attempt to circumvent adaptive filtering. The only way to shut them down is by adding a custom firewall rule to block their subnet. Streamlining that process would be a great timesaver.
