Secure, cross-platform chat over Tor (beta).

Overview

As of March 2018, Tor Messenger is no longer maintained. Please see the announcement on the blog for more information

Tor Messenger--based on Instantbird, an instant messaging client developed in the Mozilla community--is a cross-platform chat program that aims to be secure by default and sends all of its traffic over Tor. It supports a wide variety of transport networks, including Jabber (XMPP), IRC, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, Twitter, Yahoo, and others; enables Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging automatically; and has an easy-to-use graphical user interface localized into multiple languages.

Tor Messenger builds on the networks you are familiar with, so that you can continue communicating in a way your contacts are willing and able to do. This has traditionally been in a client-server model, meaning that your metadata (specifically the relationships between contacts) can be logged by the server. However, your route to the server will be hidden because you are communicating over Tor. We are also excited about systems like Ricochet, which try to solve this problem, and would encourage you to look at their designs and use them too.

Great to see TorProject tapping into the space of messaging clients. It's 2015 and we really need a usable and reliable solution.

Since this is still in beta I filed a report but I ran into rather big trouble when I tried adding IRC servers. XMPP accounts works fine though.

Off-topic note: I might stop recommending and using MacUpdate to others. The face that non SSL traffic is the norm on this site, poses a serious security threat to users. Man in the middle attacks are very easy! I absolutely do not understand why this is the case and MU admin staff is ignorant about this. Shame on you!

For a really secure communications (hell, even with secure file storage and git repositories!) give Keybase.io a try ;)

I appreciate the security of the app. It is good to know my messages are read by the people whom I write only. I am familiar with the Tor technology and I like the Tor-based messenger. UI is user-friendly and intuitive, great application.

0.1.0b5 is out: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-messenger-010b5-released Including the important OTR security fix. So update as soon as possible! MacUpdate: still a risk. Do not use this site for downloads. They do not enforce SSL usage so this site is a big security risk for it's users.

I don’t know when this happened, but MacUpdate has made it possible to browse the site with https. Just add in the errant ‘s’ to any URL and you will be viewing the site over a secure connection.
