You can probably use OnyX to set it.

Ripoff by a smug, arrogant developer who reviews his own products with 5 stars. Went from free to .99 to 3.99 what an absolute F%(*&^%^*hole. Why Macupdate allows it to remain is questionable at best. 1/2 star is too high. He can always buy some shill reviewers to pump it up. All yur star are belong to us!

@Jimw I have looked high & low in Onyx v2.4 (on Mac OS X.6.8) and do not find it. There is no other parameters under Parameters/General. I looked everywhere else but no go.
Where do you see it and in what version?

Sorry, I made an error. It is actually under Login, not General. It is near the bottom and called "Startup Sound"

v3.1.5 is for El Capitan OS X 10.11. Unfortunately, I am still stuck on Snow Leopard. Thx anyway.

There is a problem with 2.0.7. I will release 2.1.1 next days. Its limited to 10.6-10.9 because I can't test it on 10.10. If someone would like to beta test 2.1.1... welcome.

Still not working on 10.10 and no disclaimer anywhere near by. If you need to mute your startup chime, Cocktail does the job indeed as suggested by user Ean. Onyx has a mute option but that doesn't work on 10.10 as well.

Why are you "reviewing" your own app and giving it 5 stars? It does not reflect what real users of your software think and faking an uptick in popularity will only turn your hoped for user base against you.

Thanks for the info. I suggest adding that info to the description until this is tested for 10.10 as well. I'm sure you can get your hands on a mac which has 10.10 installed to test it out. Thanks for this software. Hope you can find a way to get this working on 10.10 as well.

Turning off the startup sound is not a good idea. This tone is there for a reason. The Mac does a series of system tests before each startup. If everything tests OK then you hear the chime. If not, you will hear different tones, depending upon what is wrong. This is a great aid in troubleshooting an ailing Mac. Just accept this chime as your Mac saying it's happy and ready to do your bidding.

10.10.3 MacBook Pro. Not working. Wish it was, since I am desperately looking for a solution (oh Apple, why no setting for this?). Maybe this can still evolve into a useful software.

The only solution I've found that works with Yosemite is "StartupMute" by The App Bakery. I bought it on AppStore a year ago but unfortunately it's no longer on sale and seems they've gone out of business. It's a shame that no one else has thought of such a utility as there are many users out there who are fed up with the initial gong and don't know how to get rid of it!

Fariborz: just turn down your computer's volume before powering off. No need for an application to do this for you.

Hello Jpwgibson, you are right but with so many things to do it's often too hard to remember. Still, I paid only 1 dollar for "StartupMute" to have a little peace of mind. Cheers.

Hello. As you can read in my above-mentioned comment, I only found "StartupMute" that could silence the startup chime under Yosemite. Regretfully it's no longer available. Let's cross our fingers that the developer of StartupChimeMute would do us a favor and make it work for Yosemite.
