I tried Alternate for around an hour over two separate installations via MAS and do not find in any better than Evernote's native Mac client. It is (in reviews) touted as having Markdown support, but this is spotty at best and inconsistently implemented. The WYSIWYG editing is active and a PITA, sorry; but it is. The default fonts are limited and some are very rarely seen (like Lato (I believe that is the name), this is the first time I have ever seen it)); the defaulted font size is massive and ugly.
Evernote, with an careful initial or revised by the user, is just as elegant, functional and natural a note-taking app unto itself. Also, the Evernote Mac doesn't have the gimmicky sidebar backgrounds, night-mode, etc.; it can also do a "distraction" free whole screen writing setup and with use of Byword, I get a far better Markdown experience and function. Also, for the cost of Alternate, you can get the Publishing pack add-in for Byword (on both Mac and iOS devices, so there's a bonus) and publish directly to Evernote, if you need the Markdown functionality and being above to send it to Evernote from within your note-taking app of choice.
So, for those of you who like it, enjoy. I do not and have removed it from my Mac. I do like having the option of having an alternative Evernote Mac client; but as it stands, this is not going to be mine. I'll stick with Evernote.
