Note-taking app that integrates with Evernote.

Overview

Alternote is a gorgeous OS X note-taking app that integrates with Evernote. Designed to be the most convenient and natural way to make notes, collect information, write down your ideas, feelings and memories.

Alternote is totally secure. There are no Alternote servers in the chain, just you, your Mac, and Evernote backend.

  • Distraction-free - Interface slightly dims as you start typing. Now just focus on writing.
  • Night mode and font settings - Change sidebar background, color scheme and font settings as you like.
  • Robust search - Search through note title and contents as-you-type. Start searching just as you launch Alternote, no more focusing search field.
  • Backed by Evernote - Alternote is an alternative Evernote client for Mac. You can use Evernote mobile apps and clippers. All your data will be in sync.
  • Retina-ready and smooth - You will make use of every pixel of Alternote. It’s retina-ready and has smooth, optimized scrolling. No matter how long your note is.
  • WYSIWYG, when you need it - Text styling controls don’t bother you and appear when you select something.
  • Compact mode - Hide sidebar and show notes in one line.

What's new in Alternote

Version 1.0.18:
  • Got rid of an annoying error on launch - sorry for that! It was hurting only analytics, not your data.
  • Fixed search that might not working on the newer macOS versions.

I really like this app. For whatever reason, I just didn't use Evernote well. It's probably more about me than Evernote, but with Alternote, I find that Evernote is now an important tool. The Alternote interface is clean and easy to use and I haven't had any sync issues. If you use Evernote without fail, you probably don't need this. But, if you want to increase your Evernote use easily, I recommend Alternote.

Truly beautiful concept, truly horrendous currently -- do not buy It is not even possible to search through your notes. It looks magnificent though, and you can take notes.

While I named Alternote a "Killer App" in the past in a very positive sense meanwhile I found out that Alternote deleted REPEATEDLY my internal Evernote links in Evernote notes ! ( I use central Evernote favorites as an index to more than 3.000 Evernote notes via internal Evernote links.) So Alternote breaking those index links is a real no-go for me. Hopefully Alternote's developers fix this soon.

If you are already adapted to Evernote interface, probably Alternote won't add anything new to your workflow. It is not my case, Evernote interface and organisation have always bothered, with a minimalistic approach Alternote makes it usable for me. Do not expect more than a new skin for Evernote tough, because that's what it is.

I tried Alternate for around an hour over two separate installations via MAS and do not find in any better than Evernote's native Mac client. It is (in reviews) touted as having Markdown support, but this is spotty at best and inconsistently implemented. The WYSIWYG editing is active and a PITA, sorry; but it is. The default fonts are limited and some are very rarely seen (like Lato (I believe that is the name), this is the first time I have ever seen it)); the defaulted font size is massive and ugly.
Evernote, with an careful initial or revised by the user, is just as elegant, functional and natural a note-taking app unto itself. Also, the Evernote Mac doesn't have the gimmicky sidebar backgrounds, night-mode, etc.; it can also do a "distraction" free whole screen writing setup and with use of Byword, I get a far better Markdown experience and function. Also, for the cost of Alternate, you can get the Publishing pack add-in for Byword (on both Mac and iOS devices, so there's a bonus) and publish directly to Evernote, if you need the Markdown functionality and being above to send it to Evernote from within your note-taking app of choice.
So, for those of you who like it, enjoy. I do not and have removed it from my Mac. I do like having the option of having an alternative Evernote Mac client; but as it stands, this is not going to be mine. I'll stick with Evernote.

MAS won't allow trials of apps and honestly, I can't see how this, at $6.49 Australian, defeats or beats Evernote's FREE app. I tried it and got an instant refund from Apple (good on you Apple), after thinking REALLY! . It is still a very embryonic app, a child, trying to be grown up but behind the reassured exterior is a poser. Frankly, I preferred Evernote's FREE app because it did the job just about as well as could be expected - and it is still in transition, growing with each birthday.
Can't recommend Alternote - it is still a toy.

Isn't there a demo version to give it a try? I want to know it at least a little bit before paying.

KIller App – clear nice design and speedy – no distractions like the original. Highly recommended! Substitutes Evernote app with more than 3000 notes for me. Hopefully Evernote doesn't buy it – to close it down what's meanwhile a common practice in the industry.

For version 1.0 this is amazing but there are some things the developer really needs to add besides a beautiful interface. First is offline notebooks, Evernote does this and I presume the full-suite version of OneNote will as well, this is a must for anyone trying to balance the convenience of the cloud with privacy. The second is simple a simple privacy screen; locking the app when I step away after a short time. This is something OneNote already has and is very useful to me. In fact, OneNote lets me lock individual sections rather than the whole app, this is something I wish Alternate had. The app seems to work very well and, really is a nice UI. Keep up the good work!

Having used the public beta of Alternote for a while, I can recommend it highly. It doesn't do everything that the regular Evernote client for Mac can do, but it is beautiful if you, like me, write longer notes in Evernote. The UI is simply great, especially Distraction Free View.. It also has some level of MarkDown support.
