Growly Notes4.1.5

19 September 2020

Free-form note-taking application.

Overview

Growly Notes lets you capture everything you're interested in, all in one place. Organize research projects, trips, to-do lists, or journals. Scrapbook your images, Web links, and video clips. Your imagination is the only limitation.

Pages can contain almost anything: formatted text, images, movies, audio clips, PDF files, tables, lists, Web and file links, and drawings you create in Notes. There are no rules for where things have to go: put an image beside text, or under it. Draw shapes on top of other notes. Put two snippets of text right next to each other. Click anywhere and start typing. It's really that simple.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

What's new in Growly Notes

Version 4.1.5:
  • There was an old bug in Notes that caused problems during save when you have a link to a notebook (as opposed to something within a notebook).

This application is incredible and the price (free) is nothing less than stunning. It most closely resembles Curio. It is far simpler to operate though. Try the export function. You can easily get very high quality notes back out of this app and into other programs. I haven't seen free software of this caliber in years.

I attempted to pull up the Mac App Store link and get this: ITEM NOT AVAILABLE "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store." Anyone know what's going on?

The software itself is good, but if you are writing texts in another language than English, the spelling features are not working since Growly Notes only know English … It's a pity because it seems to use the system's spelling so it should be able to support all the ones supported by the system.

I've used a variety of note apps over the years - Growly Notes comes top of my list by a long way. Simple to use and extremely versatile. As a sedate old codger I'm not that keen on the GUI shown in the image on this page, but the developer has even taken my biases into account and provided a more mundane alternative!

I've used this for years, upgrading to the paid-for version when it was released. This is the best, most solid and easy to use free-form notes application I've used. I used to use OneNote when it was the best thing Microsoft had ever written but I think Growly Notes surpasses it (even more so now OneNote for the Mac is so limited). Great product

Growly Notes ver 1 was the best note-taking app I had found, and I tried many of them. Growly Notes ver 2 is no longer free but is actually much better. The developer clearly put a lot of thought into every aspect of this. For me there was a learning curve to understand all the capabilities that can be accessed via the tabbed sidebar. The ways of handling formats (e.g., bullet lists, fonts, highlights, special symbols, indentation, ruler, styles) has changed from ver 1. Mostly this meant reading several sections of the extremely well-written docs as opposed to either scanning or ignoring them which is what I usually am able to do. If there were a freeware app that came close to doing all this app does, I would not have upgraded. But, I have looked hard in the past and I really like this app. I consider it well worth the price. Incidentally, though this is my primary notes app, I DO use other note-taking apps as well for special purposes. I use Evernote because it can automatically sync with File-This-Fetch for managing financial records. I use Sidenote for hot short-term items (it is opened by mousing over to the side of the screen), and TextWrangler for coding. But I find Growly Notes the most capable for general purpose notes because it is easy to apply formats and one can drag and drop both text and objects with ease.

Unfortunately, no longer free, but really worth the price asked. I find it still to be the best Notes app for Mac. The new interface is nice, though I would have much preferred a floating palette to the fixed area like in Pages 5 to make better use of limited screen real estate. It gives the user much control over everything, though I can't find a way to change the grid size for positioning. If the author does come out with the iPad app as hinted at, it will be totally fabulous. I just hope there will be way to sync locally instead of using iCloud. I clicked on 4, but cannot change my rating to 4.5, which I think this app deserves.

compared to Circus Ponies and Curio, this is definitely a worth competitor and a decent OneNote replacement. My main issue with this app, like a previous reviewer has said, is the textbox. Growly Notes textbox is weak compared Ponies' and Curios'. For a notetaking app, the textbox should be bread and butter feature, where it expands regardless of the length of the first line.

Great place to keep information you need to get at quickly and keep well organized. The way it moves text boxes is a bit quirky, but all in all, I use this app weekly! I love it.

OK, reading the other comments/reviews, this isn't news: Growly Notes is a great app. There's one thing I'd like to add: for those who don't like the appearance of the app, it can be customised: in the Preferences, just switch from "fun" to "serious" window layout, and it looks much more like your common mac app. If you don't like the app's icon, just replace it with a clipart of your choice. The app itself is very good UI design, rock stable, fast… Seems there is (was) lots of talent at Microsoft – the developer worked 10 years for MS – it says quite a lot about MS management, if they are not able to keep such good developers (and those devs go afterwards mac only development :-) Why isn't Growly Write here on MacUpdate? Seems to be a nice app too… One last thing: I like it that the developer included an "Uninstall" command in the menu. Very user friendly, so you don't have to hunt down files in hidden folders, as with so many other mac apps, if you want to get rid of the app; that said, Growly Notes isn't an "invasive" app at all. And yes, actually I don't know if the uninstall command even works, because, umm: why should I want to delete an app like that…

The link here on MacUpdate points to the 1.2.9 version. Going to the developer website, the proper 1.2.10 version can be downloaded.

This is a fantastic free piece of software - for something that so many people need, there always needs to be a freeware version for the little guy. This is feature rich, and functions great. Would like to customise the interface a little more, but that is being really picky. Keep up the good work, and THANK YOU.

Minor Notes update (1.2.7) So many people are using web servers to backup their notebooks, and not zipping them as we recommend, that we enhanced Notes to recover when the server doesn’t copy all the notebooks’ components. This is the only change in this version.

As most of the other reviewers have said, this is a great application. Has a very straightforward and easy to use interface, and the program lends itself to having a VERY functional/useful help/documentation component. Also has many very useful features that one would hope such a program would have. And, of course, the price just can't be beat. For the record, the current version is 1.2.7, and the MU download link is not working. Just go to the developer's site (for which the link is working) and download the current version from there.

I discovered this application about one month ago. For the first time in years I have found myself using only one application for my notes. The section colors is a very intuitive way for grouped notes and it makes me smile each time I open the application. I love the table and the text box feature and options. Thank you for this great piece of software.

I found this software not immediate to use, but once you read the help and experiment it functionalities, you get habited to it. As an example, you cannot right-click a drawing object to change its properties, but you have to select the object and then go to Format-> Drawing Properties. One of the functionalities I miss very much in this software is the possibility to capture notes from web pages, i.e., to save web pages as notes (e.g., as pdf or html pages with included contents) in the notebooks of the software (something DEVONthink Pro offers - I know, it is commercial...) to further annotate them. Also, the management of Notebooks (I could not find how to delete an entire Notebook) and Pages can be noticeably improved. As an example, it would be useful to be able to classify them using Tags, similarly to Notes. Overall, I think this software is great as offered functionalities and value, and once the above extensions/improvements will have been introduced, it will be able to compete with commercial solutions available on the market.

I was hesitant about this software at first because it was FREE! What could a "free" app do for me? As soon as I started using it I said "wait a minute...this app is fantastic!" I've found that in the short time I've been using it, the more I realized this is destined to become a "must have" and it is very easy to use with powerful features. The only thing I can compare this to is Microsoft's OneNote for the Mac. Really! Try it...it's free...and I suspect that it won't be for long!

Like OneNote, only not Microsoft? Free? Does note-taking get any better than this? Take a look at the not-"fun" interface, the other choice. Perfect! (Devs, show it here.)

I'm glad I stumbled upon this. I'm a big fan of the old program, DropDrawers, because you can create clip drawers to just quickly insert various snippets of information. And the drawers have a free-form style or organizing information. Sometimes I don't like the linear list approach. I'm more visual in nature. But DD is PPC only, and if it's true that Lion is saying goodbye to Rosetta, then DD is out for me. I already have replaced DD with DragThing, but I don't like how DT handles text clippings. I have searched for what seems like forever to find a replacement for DD's clip drawer functioning. Well, Growly Notes is the closest I've come, and it's pretty nice! I need to go to the developer page to see if they take contributions. The free price is great, but I'd like to see this program continue to evolve.

This is a really neat application that can do many things without being cluttered. The GUI is simple and easy to understand. It reminds me of iOrganize in the way it is no-nonsense in its appearance. It is so nice I think I will use this from now on for note taking.

This is an amazing app. It's like a simplified Curio but the price is right! You can add virtually anything to notes and type anywhere in a note. You can link to stuff and even link between items in different notes. I am just starting to play with this but so far it has worked without a hitch.
