dBpoweramp Music Converter17.1

02 July 2020

Convert music and rip CDs (was dBpoweramp Reference).

Overview

dBpoweramp Music Converter is audio conversion perfected, effortlessly converting your file to MP3, FLAC, Apple Lossless, and more. It has become the standard tool for audio conversions, with over 30 million users worldwide trusting their conversions to dBpoweramp.

Features
  • MP3 Converter - Convert MP3, M4A (iTunes & iPod), WMA, WAV, AIFF, AAC, FLAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC) to name a few.
  • Batch Convert - Convert large numbers of files with 1 click, filter on MP3 or other file type.
  • High-Speed Conversions - Look for an MP3 converter which encodes using all CPU cores simultaneously, getting the job done in double-quick time.
  • DSP Effects - Process the audio with volume normalization or sample / bitrate conversion. dBpoweramp is a full-featured MP3 converter.
  • No Malware - Free converters come with a little extra (a spying toolbar, Trojan, malware, or virus). dBpoweramp has never bundled in 15 years; those wanting an MP3 converter get that and only that. No Trojans, no malware, no viruses.

What's new in dBpoweramp Music Converter

Version 17.1:
  • Fixed various issues preventing dBpoweramp from working correctly on Mac OS Yosemite.
  • Added help button in window title bar.
  • Dynamic naming [encoder], [encoder+] and [k_bitrate] now consistently return information about the destination file.
  • Reordered encoder list for better readability.
  • Added 'edit tags' in Finder context menus for folders.
  • Updated dynamic naming dialog, added examples.
  • Tag fields set to "" (empty) are now removed.
  • Multi Encoder: Shared file naming can be used for configured encoders - “use parent settings” in naming picker.
  • Improved readability of conversion info/errors page.
  • Better feedback when the conversion destination path cannot be written to.
  • Configuration dialog cleaned up, separate 'diagnostics' tab. Added option to suppress startup update checks.
CD Ripper
  • Fixed de-emphasis not being correctly activated on CDs with pre-emphasis.
  • Added de-emphasis toggle.
  • Fixed incorrect handling of quotation marks in file names.
  • Icons updated for better dark mode readability.
  • Prevented meta refresh from being triggered again while already in progress.
  • Don't show nonsense in filename column with special encoders.
  • Fixed missing "disc in accuraterip" notice.
  • Album art lookup shows number of pictures retrieved so far.
  • Added a toggle for manual search when there is no metadata.
  • Removed obsolete freedb submission feature.
  • Smarter handling of metadata if read from CDText, UPC and ISRC when blending with PerfectMETA.
  • No longer fails if multiple tracks produce same file name (repeating title + no track number in the pattern).
  • Fixed app becoming unresponsive when the previously chosen destination folder is inaccessible.
  • Conversion info/errors are now always shown in correct order, not in order they finished encoding. Particularly relevant with Multi Encoder.
  • Metadata edits are auto saved when the window loses focus.
  • Fixed playback not working.
  • New option 'manual metadata search if no metadata' on by default
  • Reads artists better from discogs on various artist cds
Batch Converter
  • Fixed 'last modified' date column not showing correct values.
  • Added filtering by last modified date.
  • Opening Batch Converter or CD Ripper from menu rather than launcher buttons now reuses active launcher window rather than creating new windows.
  • Button layout updated.
  • Made Batch Converter remember last used profile.
  • Do not pre-select last used profile when started via Finder menu in a specific folder.
  • Fixed incorrect saving of selected files/folders in profiles.
Codecs
  • DSD tag writing now uses Unicode
  • Wavpack updated to 5.3.0
  • m4a FDK updated to 2.0.1
  • ID3v2 tags TBPM now mapped to BPM
Bug fixes
  • Fixed bugs with converter profiles, no longer crashes when trying to create a duplicate profile.
  • Fixed cover image scanning support.
  • Made Arrange Audio respect file name character replacement settings.
  • Fixed incorrect handling of quotation mark characters in Run External DSP configuration.
  • Finder menus cleaned up, no more separate entries for folder / file actions, should fix keyboard shortcut binding.
  • Naming [REPLACE] and [SPLIT] now use rather than , to signify comma to replace or split on, this allows empty strings to be set for replace, to replace space with nothing: [replace] ,,[artist][]

Most helpful

Program has many good features, but jumping through hoops to get pre-sales support (like having to sign up for a forum) and they have other user act like complete know-it-all a-holes doesn't really convince me to purchase the program in spite of doing what I would like to accomplish. Also, some feature documentation is ridiculously poor or absent, which is why I needed the pre-sales support to answer the question. Would have likely purchased it if it wasn't for the poor support, rude community and poor or absent documentation. I ended up purchasing multiple programs to accomplish what DMC would have done strictly on principle.

I like this program but it is much too expensive. I incidentally use such tools and then there are much free alternatives.

Checks several metadata suppliers at once, you can preview and mix the info at will to get it right before ripping, has accurate rip function, lots of options, you can even choose the number of CPU cores to use. Best CD ripper right now (the converter is a nice add-on to me). The GUI smells a bit like PC (where it originally came from), but is above the (few) competitors and is getting better in newer versions. Version 16 is a paid upgrade (50% for earlier customers). No-brainer for audio high-enders!

The best tool available for ripping CDs (includes accurip) and for converting audio from one format to another. This has Finally, after many years, been made available for the Mac with thanks to Spoon, the man behind the scenes for more years than I can remember. IMHO - this is the finest product on the market and will likely remain so. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If your audio is important to you, thesis an indispensable tool.

If you're serious about Audio CD Ripping this is the best yet on Mac. Ultra Secure mode, Accurate Rip Database support, completed with a decent log file. I used XLD before and yes, it's good, but this one is better. Actually, this is a suite and the CD ripper is a part of it. It also comes with a Batch Converter and a Music Converter. However I haven't used those yet, so my rating is purely about the ripper, YMMV. BTW the app has arrived at version 15.1 and functionality is now the same as the Windows version. Thank you devs for bringing dBpoweramp to the Mac!
