Spell check is greyed out even after OCR. Expensiv and at the end you can use only half of it.

The Mac app is ok. The OCR engine behind the scenes is very good. ABBY licenses out their OCR technology to third parties such as Fujitsu (ScanSnap) and DevonTechnologies. I suspect that's their main focus rather than direct consumer sales. The Mac app still cannot process pdf documents in batch, which Adobe Acrobat has long done. Shame.

Fantastic! Just converted a document with 6 different languages buried in it and the job was done quickly and accurately. This is a gotta have if you deal with PDFs and multiple languages!

After many years, its clear Abbyy, like Nuance, will never make a full featured parity same as the Windows version. They still take too long to release bug fixes as well. Will not pay for future upgrades. I got screwed on their product thats just ok, but not for my demanding OCR needs. But sadly the other Mac OCR from Germany has its hands tied to Google OCR engine and so wont do any engine fixes. The only USA OCR has terrible tech support. After 20 yrs, There appears we mac folk are screwed on a professional quality OCR tool. Welcome to the lock in OS wars. :-p

"Though there is no demo download, MacUpdate Desktop users can download and install the update to v.12.1.3." Not only MU Desktop users can - anyone with a valid copy of FR Pro 12 has access to the updater file through the app's "Check for Updates" function.

So its taken Abbyy nearly a year -- many updates at least -- to fix the many bugs and performance problems. Yet, they still won't make it feature parity with the Windows version. I suspect they will do v13 requiring 10.9/10.10 to finally get what I originally paid for and wanted ( like what Primzo did recently). I pray they will continue to support 10.7. For the many visual reasons I can't upgrade to 10.9/10.10. Please give me two key features, supporting 10.7: 1. A user vocab list so app knows the correct spelling of special words; or learn new words on the fly. 2. An edit pane near the image page so I can make corrects page not afterwards.

This is 2014, not 1985!! You don't allow saving an exported file to a folder/directory which has []< >-– in its name!!! This proves to me you really don't understand the macintosh OS x file system at all. I bet you fail with unicode characters in the folder name too. Unacceptable bug! Fix now, not 6 months from now. You should be ashamed.

ABBYY has chosen to cripple the mac version. It is far from being feature parity with the Windows version. The key feature to preview/edit a page before exporting it is not there; which any OCR tool worth its cost has. They are cynical towards the mac market: Over charging for the upgrade, slow for updates and bug fixes, and poor tech support. Good luck getting them to do a demo version. Like Nuance, they seem to dislike the mac market. They will milk the upgrade cost as long and as much as they can. I wasted my money on the upgrade. As for the ocr engine, oh, its very good, just the Gui driving it sucks.

Bought version 12.03 back in November or December 2013 from the ABBYY site, but have no way to update it to this 12.04 version ... so I can't make any comment on that. Given the update experience (or lack of update experience) I'm marking it down ... and will continue to keep ReadIris for my OCR, and the insanely good VueScan, for my general scanning needs. I've sent a couple of feedback missives and support requests to ABBYY over the last couple of weeks - but received nothing in return - so their support sucks big-time as well. Your mileage may vary update wise if you bought through the App Store ... but I bought directly from ABBYY. At the moment, I would avoid them at all costs ... but what the hell, it's your money. I've wasted mine, and my time trying to get an answer out of them.

Very pleased to see FineReader Pro come to the Mac. As Georg-74 mentions, there is no correction window (which I'd really like to see in a future update), but the quality of the character recognition is much better than the Express version, and the choice of areas and export options is also wider. The interface is quite different from the Windows version, but certainly none the worse for this. I've yet to try it with a larger document to judge the speed - but it seems much closer to the Windows version than I had expected. The accuracy still seems slightly lower than the Windows version, but again there isn't a lot in it (the Windows version seems slightly better at identifying areas to recognise).

There is an other problem with the Pro-version. This version costs $ 99. I am thinking about upgrading from ABBYY FinerRader Express which costs $ 69. They ask for another $ 79 for this upgrade! Very, very steep for anyone and this with missing features. Come on guys, whit such a policy, nobody will upgrade by such a hefty price. Well, and testing it without a Demo is also not possible. Besides that, there is no comparison chart to compare the two software to see, if an upgrade makes sense. My rating is shooted, because I did not buy the program, and MacUpdate forces you to rate.

I always wondered why ABBYY didn't offer a normal version of it's fantastic Finereader software for Mac. Now that it is out I immediately bought it on the App Store. It is pretty cool to not have to fire up Windows anymore to get a decent OCR job done. The downside is that this version is missing a major feature of the Windows version, the text correction window. So you have to export the document to see if the text was recognized fine or not and you can't do individual corrections. Another downside: There is a major bug. Changing text frames on a page inadvertedly stops working on a more than regular base. One has to zoom in more than 300% and then the frame tool starts working again. A real deal breaker if you have to work with hundreds of pages efficiently. I really do hope the guys at ABBYY get this fixed soon and include a feature upgrade that allows to edit the recognized text before exporting!
