MovieIndex overview

MovieIndex generates a contact sheet from all video types.

  • It handles every sort of video, whether QuickTime-compliant (like .mov AppleIntermediateCodec or ProRes, .m4v, etc.) or some other exotic video format (MTS, MKV, AVI, OGV, WebM).
  • It always displays images at the correct aspect ratio (not badly stretched!)
  • No interlacing comb effect on images.
  • Two quality modes, depending on the purpose of your cataloged video: to store onto disk or to print.
  • There are even some classic customizable options: choose the size of images, their number, page background color, etc.

MovieIndex... because a "cataloged video" is far more convenient to consult than the video itself.

What’s new in version 2.00

Version 2.00:
  • New features:
    • Generate an additional summary of all your loaded movies (so, create a contact sheet for every videos and their summary)
    • [New automation] Allow to directly load all videos from an SD card
  • [Major bugfix] Due some system updates, "Transport Stream videos" (like .ts or .m2ts) produced a blank page
  • [User request] New preference to choose the size of the video captions (size: mini, medium or big)
  • [Optimization] The app is far speedier with "transport stream videos" and more reliable (i.e., memory management bug fixes, to allow to load more than 500 videos)
  • Various minor bug fixes and improvements (45 changes)

Could you make the app simply make 1 photo thumbnail file per video? I have many videos and I want each video to have only 1 thumbnail. Not 2, not 4, not 20. Only one! Also if you make 2 or more thumbs per video I want them in separate files not in the same image. It sounds pretty easy, yet I cannot find a mac app that can do it. Could you also let me not include the video title if I want to? I don't understand why it is grayed out. I want clean simple image per video. No cluttering. I pay what you want just do it.

Nice start, but needs a lot of work. The file information it puts at the top is HUGE, there is no way to tell it basic things like "do 4 thumbnails across by 20 down, each 400px wide, and adjust capture timing to fit" or "do 10 thumbnails across, each 200px wide,, and make the image as long as necessary to catalog the entire video", or "do the same, but split into separate contact sheet files every 70 thumbnails", or whatever. It only provides a few pre-ordained options. Can't drag-drop into the application, only onto its icon. Can't save the contact sheet to the same directory as the video (should be the default behavior, but not even an option). Forget fancy features like being able to constrain the exact dimensions of the thumbnail images in the sheet, to fix incorrect aspect ratio. Developer: Please, just copy the standard features of typical Windows thumbnailers, and you'll make the app we actually want. On the plus side, this is adequate for creating some basic thumbnail sheets just for cataloging your Movies folder or something, and it is very fast.

Just purchased as a replacement for Thumbs which keeps crashing for some unknown reason but Is otherwise excellent. However I just batch edited 10 videos all different codecs and though MovieIndex took a bit longer It used a lot less CPU than thumbs without a hitch. One thing It should be able to do Is save the file to the same folder as the source so until It does 4 & 1/2 stars but fantastic app and so glad to have found It on Macupdate! Highly recommended.

I've been using this app for a while. The UI is proficient and without any bullshit. The program processes videos really really fast and the file/codec compatibility is good! Can't remember any non-processable files :) in the past I've encountered some minor bugs, reported them and got a response pretty quick.
