If you want to share a folder or file on you hard drive with Dropbox, you have to copy or move it into the Dropbox folder. If you copy it, you'll have a duplicated item, if you move it, it will not be existed in its original path.

If you use ShareMate, it uploads the original item into the ShareMate folder in Dropbox without copying/moving and gives you the link. Very easy!

One point to be considered here. After uploading, Dropbox downloads the item into the /Dropbox/Apps/ShareMate folder on your hard drive. Not to have the duplicated item on your hard drive, You can use the Selective Sync feature of Dropbox and disable sync for ShareMate folder. To do this, open Dropbox Preferences… Advanced, Selective Sync, Change Settings…, Switch to Advanced View and uncheck the ShareMate folder.
