I had hoped this wound have been built into HB itself but the developer forums folks said "each movie's transcoding should be hand tailored, blah blah blah..." I wanted to transcode a hundred Looney Tunes from the 50's and don't care if the quality is perfect, this is what I've been waiting for. Thanks.

If all you want to do is convert some AVIs for the iPad, as I often do, it couldn't be simpler: Select a format from the presets (e.g. iPad, iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, Android, Tablet), choose the output folder, drag the movie files into its window and click the "Process" button. I had tried other converter tools before, but they usually overwhelm me with too many options I do not care about for my needs. The only other tool I know that is as easy as this is Elgato's turbo.h264 HD.

I tried that one first, of course - but it did not do what I wanted it to do, so I wrote my own.

Whatever preset I select it does not change the output size. If I load a 1280 x720 movie and select the "iPhone Legacy" I should not get a movie that is still 1280 x720.

In that case, you should use Handbrake itself. This app is meant for batch conversion by dropping, for example, 200 episodes in its window and then GO!
