Manage the permissions of your computer.

Overview

PropEdit is Mac OS X application which allows you to easily manage the permissions of your computer's files.

It allows you to change the owner, group, permissions and specific system flags for any file or directory on your hard disk.

In its registered version, PropEdit also has a built-in support for Mac OS X ACLs (Access Control Lists), allowing you to take a full control over your filesystem permissions.

What's new in PropEdit

Version 2.1.0:
  • Permissions can now be set in octal.

I tried PropEdit, BatChmod, ACL Fix, and Sandbox. PropEdit was the most polished and feature-rich. A great tool for the job. Of the other options, all are free. Sandbox was almost as feature rich, although not as simple to use, as PropEdit. If you don't mind spending $5 for a permission/flag/ACL editor, go with PropEdit. If you want something free to do the same thing, I'd suggest SandBox.

should optimize the interface for the screen size of 11" macair, even without the dockbar the window is to limit of the screen height (the button to the editor acl would not even be displayed if not in fullscreen)

I wish this also allowed for editing ACLs. Otherwise, it's terrific.

Just bought it. Congrads on finding that 'sweet spot' in pricing. Lots of developers would have charged $30 without blinking. This utility is sweet and adding the ACL editor makes it a real winner. Not may apps out there that can do this.

It is a mistake to assume everyone has SnowLeopard. However I can't really complain since the product is free.

It's a mistake to assume every developer has access to old SDK versions... I'm running XCode 4, and don't have the 10.5 SDK anymore, unfortunately... : (

Sanbox is very flaky and didn't run on my 10.6 system. So try that if you're willing to trust it.
