A Better Finder Attributes

6.20
11 December 2019

Change file creation and modification dates.

Overview

A Better Finder Attributes 6 allows you to change JPEG & RAW shooting dates, JPEG EXIF meta-data tags, file creation & modification dates, file flags and deal with invisible files.

Correct EXIF Digital Photo Shooting Timestamps

A Better Finder Attributes 6 allows you to manipulate JPEG, CR2, NEF, ARF, RAF, SR2, CRW & CIFF EXIF timestamps at will by setting them to specific times or batch adjusting them by adding and removing time (useful for correcting the timestamps of images taken with a digital camera with a incorrectly set clock and to compensate for timezone changes).

Correct Finder Sorting for Digital Photos

A Better Finder Attributes 6 also allows you to synchronize the file creation and modification dates with the shooting dates of JPEG EXIF as well as a wide variety of RAW formats, so that files sort properly in the Finder and other systems.

Change, Add & Remove JPEG EXIF Meta-Data

A Better Finder Attributes 6 allows the most commonly used JPEG EXIF meta-data tags, such as copyright & owner information, camera & lens specifactions, some exposure information and much else besides to be directly manipulated.

You can strip JPEG EXIF information from a file altogether, strip GPS and IPTC location data or edit individual tags.

Total File Creation & Modification Date Control

A Better Finder Attributes 6 gives you total control over file creation and modification dates, setting them to specific times and dates, adding or removing time or simply removing them altogether.

Setting Mac File Flags

A Better Finder Attributes 6 supports setting all common Mac file system flags. You can set whether or not file extensions appear in the Finder, batch lock or unlock files, set or remove legacy creation & type codes, remove invisible files, restart the Finder in a special mode that shows invisible files, batch set Finder labels and force Finder updates.

Showing & Deleting Invisible Files

A Better Finder Attributes 6 can delete invisible files, such as .DS_Store, that can lead to problems when delivering files to non-Mac systems and play havoc with Unix tools such as version control and archiving tools.

On top of this A Better Finder Attributes has a special "Show Invisible Files" feature hidden in the "Tools" menu that switches the Finder to a special mode in which invisible files become visible

Other Noteworthy Features
  • Batch operation
  • Create Droplets for automated processing
  • Drag-and-drop into the file list or onto the application icon
  • Select files in the Finder and activate A Better Finder Attributes 5 via the Finder context menu or via a hot key
  • Automatically deals with file date consistency rules
  • Separate processing for files and folders, batch processing of sub-folders
  • Additionally, A Better Finder Attributes 5 gives you control over:
  • Whether or not file extensions appear in the Finder
  • Batch locking or unlocking of files
  • Setting or removing legacy creator and type codes
  • Removing invisible files
  • Seeing invisible files in the Finder
  • Batch setting of Finder labels
  • Forcing the Finder to update its information about files and folders

This app along with the companion 'A Better Finder Rename' from the same company, are two of my 'must have' utilities on my Mac Flash drive 'toolbox' that I carry with me. I can't remember a time when I didn't use these two apps (or don't want to remember!) It's probably been many releases since I've given a rating, so I"m correcting that oversight now.

NO, A Better Finder Attributes has NOT been discontinued!
You can download v6.0.9 here:
http://www.publicspace.net/download/ABFAX.dmg

What was discontinued, way back in 2006, was 'A Better Finder Creators & Types', which was replaced by A Better Finder Attributes, which is currently available for sale and will be updated on into the future. Ahem MU!

Application continuously throws offer to join mailing list, although I checked not show again box. I contacted the developer, but he only suggests deleting the preferences file which didn't solved. Problem continues and no reply from developer since. I regret upgrading from File Multi Tool 5 and requested refund and still waiting a reply from he developer.

Hi,
I presume you were talking to John, who is not with us anymore?
Your preferences file is being deleted by another application and that is why A Better Finder Attributes keeps starting as if for the first time.

You either have a "cleaner" utility running that deletes the files every time it "cleans" or you have a permissions problem on your ~/Library/Preferences folder.

Contact me if you need more help.

Thank you for your one year late reply.
No, my preferences file is not being deleted by another application.
I don't have a "cleaner" utility running that deletes the files every time it "cleans".
I don't have a permissions problem on my ~/Library/Preferences folder.
For this bug in your application, I use File Multi Tool 5 instead without any problem like this.

Can you email me at reiff@publicspace.net to get your refund on A Better Finder Attributes? I can't see your identity in this forum.

I'm sorry if John did not contact BMT about the refund at the time. He had full authority to do so and I never quibble over refunds.

A Better Finder Attributes 6 stores your "do not show this message again" response in the Preferences file at: ~/Library/Preferences/ net.publicspace.abfa6.plist along with all its other settings.

If this systematically wasn't working for anybody, then my mail box would be full of people telling me so and I haven't had any other complaints, thus my suspicion that the file can't be written or is deleted.

Thank you Frank. I already got the refund a year ago. I also suggested for completely removing email list requests from the application.

ditto - Better Rename pulls Exif date and time into Filename - no more sweating over images with same filename from multiple cards from camera.
AND I use Better Attributes to fix greyed out file names .

This app has not yet been updated to protect against the Sparkle updater framework vulnerability that was discovered in Jan. 2016. Apps that use a vulnerable version of Sparkle and an unencrypted HTTP channel for server updates are at risk of being hijacked to transmit malicious code to end users.

Version 5.23 and latest 5.24 can't even start up properly in Mavericks Mac OS 10.9. So what's the point of keep releasing such crappy software ? Don't you test your software with proper quality control before software release ? Developers wake up your stupid idea !

Developer fixed it in version 5.25 after I sent log and configuration files. The company is really listening. I used ABFAX since the very first version and this is the best solution for those who prepare CD/DVD libraries etc. Good job!
