Whenever I see an app get three 5-star reviews in quick succession from people who have only just joined MacUpdate and who have only reviewed the app in question, and who only use a one-liner basically saying "this app is great", I get interested. Is the app really this good? I work a lot with icons so I had to download it to see for myself. Ok, if you want a quick way to assign a custom icon to a single, or multiple folders at once, and you're happy with the bundled icons, then this app does that. The interface isn't particularly elegant, but it's functional & gets the job done. Drag the folder(s) you want to change onto the app, double-click the icon you want to use, job done. Many of the bundled icons weren't to my liking, but that's purely down to individual taste. (I'm assuming they're royalty free images from around the web as I've seen some of them before elsewhere). My major problem is that the app allowed me to assign a custom icon just 3 times before telling me my trial was over!! Not really sufficient time to see how useful it would really be, how stable it is, what features it might have, etc. The help also seems to be sadly lacking, so I wasn't able to explore how the 'custom' categories work. There is a short video (no audio) on the website, but it only covers the basic function and not how to add your own custom icons. I did try dragging a few png images into the custom section, but for some reason FIC didn't arrange them at all and they disappeared when I quit the app and relaunched it (maybe that's another trial limitation?). Also there doesn't appear to be any way to edit/modify the icons, which many of the icon-changing apps allow you to do. I did hope that was what the 'customize' icon on the toolbar was for, but that just lets you customize the toolbar itself. So, from what I can tell this app does one thing, and appears to do it ok. Beyond that I can't say owing to the somewhat 'severe' trial limitation.

Really... it's not so good, unless your goal is to make your Mac look like a PC from the early 2000s, or you want you folders to look like a duck or a blue heron. I tried to give my hard drive and elephant ass icon and Folder Icon Changer froze. It's obvious that quite a bit of time was put into the creation of this app. Maybe a little more time should have been put into thinking about what types of icons should be pre-loaded into it. If you want your folders to be kittens then you're in luck. If you'd like to make a statement about your taste in computers and push the envelope a bit, this might not be the app for you. (or me.)

Hi PaperCutPro - The app comes bundled with more than just animal icons, which you must have noticed. Most importantly, though, it that the app also allows you to create custom folders of icons from any image. It sounds like that information was not clear. Yes, quite a bit of time has been put into this app - and everyone is going to have different tastes in icons. Icon files are fairly large, and with the number of icons we provide pre-loaded, the download is somewhat large. One thing we could do is remove a series of icons, and replace it with a series that you (and perhaps others) like better...

@Gotoes - good answer. I tried to take it easy but maybe I was harsher than you deserved. They say, "you can't account for taste" and I should know, since I'm in a similar occupation to yours. If I can amend my star rating, I will.

Rob - In Response to your review, we have made some changes and released a new version, which should be appearing soon on macupdate. The new trial version increases the free trial to 15 uses. Before, it was 5 (though you cited 3). Also, we have fixed an issue where some people were confused by the window not scrolling back to the top when switching icon libraries (that is why it seemed like they "disappeared" when you closed the program. They hadn't disappeared, but they were scrolled to the top). Also, we plan to enhance the help/support/instructions on our web page. Again, thank you for all of the constructive commentary!

Hi - This app is for Snow Leopard (10.6) only. It will only work on Snow Leopard. If it does not run on Leopard, that is expected, so please do not post a negative comment. Thanks!

Hi Alexsa - I'm really sorry, this app is only for 10.6 and later. Technically, it's not crashing on 10.5: it just does not run on 105. I fixed the listing to reflect this. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I tried downloading the free trial version, both from the MacUpdate website and from the developers website. In both instances the app crashed as it was trying to open. I'm using OS 10.5.8.
