RSS reader.

Overview

Reader is a news reader for the Mac with support for various sync services.

Reeder adds new features like…
  • The new Bionic Reading mode
  • An in-app Read Later service which syncs with iCloud
  • Image previews in the articles list (finally)
  • An image viewer
  • Much improved article viewer
  • More layout options, including automatic layout depending on window size
  • Improved reader view
Navigate the app using gestures for a great reading experience. Customize shortcuts and gestures to fine-tune the app to your needs.
Supported sync services:
  • Feedbin
  • Feedly
  • Feed Wrangler
  • FeedHQ
  • NewsBlur
  • The Old Reader
  • Inoreader
  • BazQux Reader
  • Instapaper
  • Pocket

If you want to use a self-hosted service, Reeder should work with services which use the Fever or the Google Reader API. Or just standalone RSS (without syncing) if you don't want to use any service.

What's new in Reeder

Version 4.2.2:
Fixed:
  • HTML in title of Reader View mode
  • Read Later sync delays

Almost perfect app! Unfortunately since "upgrading" to Mojave, I can't use the "add to reading list" feature which is a real shame. Hope the developer resolves this in the next update.

Wish I could rate Reeder higher, but Silvio Rizzi’s lack of interest in even responding to his customers really lets him down. Silvio seems to have taken a leaf out of David Watanabe’s book, a developer of the previously well loved RSS reader, NewsFire, what is it about RSS developers…? Breezing through a huge list of news feeds is simple, it’s all made easy thanks to the keyboard shortcuts. The built in web scraper is great. But then the built in WebKit view is terrible. Reeder has obviously had a lot of love in the past, but now it feels neglected, like Silvio has gotten bored of the project and quietly moved on. The best thing would be for the developer to sell Reeder on to someone who will polish up the great application he’s already made. Please, Silvio, do it for us!

Fast and efficient, the developper has published a new version of Reeder that replaces the deprecated Readability with another parser. He would certainly have avoided my profound disappointment and the my scathing review here below by pushing this update just a few days earlier and before the end of Readability's parser. Yes, a developper is just a human being after all, but my previous experiences with Rizzi's entirely inexistant customer relationship has exhausted my trust a long time ago…

Longtime user of the product, which I really like all in all. Like others though I've been deeply frustrated by Silvio Rizzi's complete disinterest in his customers. Now, despite Readability's announcement that they would shut down their service 6 months ago, Reeder still relies on it for its "reading" view; Readability's team was even good enough to link to an alternative. Your mileage may vary, of course, but for me that's the core feature of an RSS reader. So, well, if you want to be sure to have a product whose features don't disappear, and a developer polite enough to consider your requests worth an answer, I would recommend you just move on.

Was a long-time user of Reeder (Mac and iOS), and even purchased Reeder 2 for iOS after having moved everything to Sunstroke following the Google Reeder shutdown. Despite Reeder's slick UI, I opted to stay with Sunstroke and will stick with ReadKit on my MacBook. My main gripe has to do with the relative lack of transparency from the developer. Bug reports and feedback to the developer go un-answered (an acknowledgement of receipt would be nice), and updates tend to be few and far between, leaving bugs and performance issues to linger for months. I've no problem paying for an upgrade to support Silvio but I need to know that support will be reciprocal.

Reeder is back. 2.0 is smooth, quick, easy to use. It was my old standby and it is once again my go-to news reader. I gladly purchased the new version. Silvio labored to develop the new Reeder and is deserving of our purchases. Ten bucks well spent.

Today Reeder 2.0 is out of beta so great news for Reeder addicts. Well I was one but IMHO the dev Silvio Rizzi went nuts by asking money again for this update. After withdrawing Reeder 1 from the MAS a year ago and a long silence we have a version 2 which brings not much new features except functionality to sync RSS again. Decide yourself and read this review carefully http://www.macstories.net/reviews/reeder-2-for-mac-review/

Actually running 2.0b7 here, dunno why MU is behind… I, too, switched to ReadKit, which is a great app; but since 2.0b3, I've found Reeder plenty functional enough to once again handle my daily reading. Nothing against ReadKit, it's a great app, but Reeder has always had a simple elegance that's unique. If Apple had designed an RSS reader, it would be something like Reeder.

It took a while to get a new version, but it's back! It seems that I missed it, too. Already using it several times in the first day. Still has a beta feel to it, but no major issues. Seems fast and retains a minimalist layout despite supporting several RSS aggregators and their nuances.

I use Feedwrangler and I don't see why Reeder (on any platform apparently) can't tell me how many unread articles I have in my smart streams. For this reason I shall continue to use Readkit on Mac, Mr Reader on iPad (with the awesome iOS7 skin you can download). I don't do much RSS reading on iPhone but I still have Reeder going here. I've been a Reeder fan for years so I hope this feature gets added back.

Really happy with this. I bought the iPad version first, then the iPhone version. Held off on the Mac version for awhile as it seemed to be a little light on features, but I took another look yesterday and liked what I saw. I've got about 60-75 feeds I subscribe to in Google Reader. Everything loaded up as expected, with all my folders intact (and everything sorted properly). I do wish I could sort feeds/folders within Reeder itself, but as I understand, Google Reader has no official API; all third party clients rely on reverse-engineered specs, so it's a bit of a miracle that everything works as well as it does. I can do everything except rearrange the orders of feeds/folders within Reeder. Really nice UI — and I'm not just saying it's pretty (though it *is* pretty). The layout and interactions are all very well thought-out and implemented. It adapts nicely to changes in window and pane width (e.g. the list of feeds collapses to a column of icons if you make it really narrow). You can also collapse the viewer pane for a really compact view. After using NetNewsWire for ~8 years, Reeder feels refreshingly modern.

It's good and looks lovely and has loads more features than Netnewswire but I still prefer the NNW experience for readability, usability when monitoring large numbers of feeds and for its options to open multiple tabs which, unless I've missed it, isn't a feature that Reeder has. The iPhone / iPad version on the other hand is fantastic and has replaced NNW, which I've never felt has worked properly as a mobile interface.

You won't believe the number of trackers this software has attached to it. If you monitor it's network traffic, you'll be shocked at what it's doing. In addition, it's connection to google reader is about as insecure as it gets. Beware that whatever you're reading is being tracked.

I am amazed at all the high ratings for this app - a pretty UI does make a good newsreader - what is noteworthy is that there is almost as much functionality missing as there are 'features' - and that is before we get to the bugs. Gruml is a MUCH better, full featured newsreader with a modern Mac UI, has all the functionality missing from this app and it is FREE. Anyone that is prepared to pay $10 for this, contact me, I have some great tickets for the maiden voyage of a ship called Titanic.

i've been a longtime netnewswire user and this is the first rss reader for mac that's matched it for the features i need/use. so for that alone it gets 5-stars. however, i will deduct 1-star for the following minor niggles (FR=Feature Request): - BUG: moving to next article too quickly will cause articles to not get marked as read. - FR: ability to use custom css - FR: keyboard shortcut to go to next UNREAD item - FR: mark the article in the list as read AFTER it is deselected (when you go to the next article), so if i "Clear Read Items", it doesn't remove the currently selected article. - FR: upon startup immediately go to first unread item or last group viewed - FR: growl notification with # of new items when feed is automatically refreshed - FR: keep selected article near top of pane (with only 1 or 2 read articles above it) so it lines up with the tile on the right preview pane (so eyes don't have to jump from middle left to top right). also make it so that the list rolls up/down and the selection stays in place (similar to date rollers in iOS). - FR: ability to refresh non-G.Reader feeds and sync with G.Reader at the same time. (for the record, every mac rss reader i've seen does one or the other, but not both.) - FR: option to hide broken images - FR: even larger font size in article list pane so while there's still some room for improvement, for me reeder is one of the best rss readers that integrates with Google Reader. (for comparison, i would rate netnewswire 4-stars as well.)

The GUI is outstanding, but I have written this developer on several occasions to determine whether Reeder will be released in final form as a MAS only with no response. This is important as MAS is currently not an option for me. I have deleted Reeder as I do not wish to keep using an app they might potentially be unavailable to me and therefor waste my time (too bad, as I like Reeder a lot). There seems to be a trend here at MU where some developers are putting their betas out to pubic via MU, but then release as MAS only. Essentially, they are using MU the way people appear to be using Best Buy: go to Best Buy and see whether you like a product; go home and order it from Amazon. MU becomes free PR for MAS developers.

I won't buy this. NetNewsWire have clipping folders. With NNW I can work with 500 feeds, save some for read later (not uncomfortable readitlater) and feel good. I tried Reeder. It's nice, but for blondes (i don't know that blondes read on RSS)))). 10-20 feeds — it's limit for Reader)) And, I really think — it must be free or very very chipper)))

I'll be buying this when it's out of beta! I like Reeder on my iPad, but I love it on my Mac! The Mac version is different and (IMO) better. One of the things I like the most is that I can select individual feeds within folders, which I can't do on my iPad (or if it's possible, it's not obvious to me). The only reason I didn't give this beta version the full five stars is that I would like to be able to increase the width of the article. Right now it's fixed at a narrower width than I'd like.

I like it. It’s sleek and snazzy, but one thing really bugs me: there is no scrollbar in the story list. If you don’t have an Apple mouse and don’t use your trackpad, have a third-party mouse with a scroll wheel, or even just prefer having scrollbars (the latter two describe me), then you are SOL, it seems (get to mouse-wheel scrolling if you need to find something farther down the list). The custom scrollbar on the story pane itself is nice. Could we get one of those—or an option for one of those—in the story list, too? This would make me very happy. 8) Good start to what I’m sure will be a very popular app.

This is a really great application. I've tried out NetNewsWire, Gruml, and Vienna before settling in on Reader. Now Reader is my favorite. What really set the application apart for me was the look and functionality of the user interface. I really appreciate that the develop did something different. It's cleaner looking then the others and comes off simple to use, but maintains essential functionality without overwhelming the user. What that boils down to is an app that doesn't get in your way. Like others have noted, it's hard to believe its beta. While it doesn't have all of its intended features at this stage, it never felt like a beta app. Very usable beta. Really great execution so far. I'm really looking forward to the continued development of this application.

Draft 5 came out today with full integration of the Readability service. You can choose to have Reeder load pages with Readability, rather than in their original form, in the background, you can set clicking on article links to default to the Readability view, and can activate the Readability view with a hotkey. Articles look beautiful with Readability, as the service is integrated directly into the app (rather than Reeder simply loading the article's web page with the Readability modifications applied). They appear on Reeder's lovely old paper brown background with the font you set in the preferences. In fact, they look exactly like articles from full-text feeds do in Reeder (minus any adds that may appear in the full-text feeds). Anyway, for me this is the single greatest feature in the history of RSS readers. I used to go for a similar effect with the Instapaper Mobilizer service in Reeder, but Readability works better with more pages and is tightly integrated into the app. As of today, I'm completely sold on Reeder and won't hesitate to buy it when it comes out of beta.

Very nice--looks extremely promising so far. The interface is beautiful and functional. On the whole I find it provides a much pleasanter RSS experience than Gruml, Vienna, or NetNewsWire (which isn't meant as an insult to any of these excellent apps). I also particularly like the ability to load up articles in the Instapaper Mobilizer view, a beautifully minimal and ad-free way to read articles. Unfortunately, there's currently no way to invoke Mobilizer with a hotkey. Hopefully a future revision will implement this ability, either by allowing configuration of hotkeys for the web-based services, or perhaps by allowing the user to set the Mobilizer article view as the default. I'm looking forward to future development on Reeder!

It's a good start, a great looking app. However it seems a little slow at the moment. Compared to Gruml the click wait for text to appear seems slow, where in Gruml it's pretty much instant. It's not quite intuitive enough, buttons are a little small at the top and unlike many other mac apps, I can't move them (Customise Toolbar). I do like the ability to shrink the sidebar just to show icons with an unread number, the problem is many articles from the same website use the same icon, making it difficult to differentiate without hovering. Look forward to updates.

fast, very clean and usable. Some little bugs (enormous RAM usage the most annoying) but I'm sure they will be fixed soon.

A very good start. Mammoth RAM hit but that'll be dealt with I'm sure.

Very nice so far. Seems to be doing for Google Reader what Sparrow is doing for Gmail (very similar interface). Thanks!

Wow! It sure is fast. Feels a little clunky to operate though, not giving up on NNW just yet.
