Ephemeral overview

Ephemeral is a screen saver that draws animated IFS fractals, giving an ever–changing display of complex, natural shapes. The fractals evoke the structure of many objects found in nature such as plants, crystals, fire, and clouds.

The fractals are drawn as a swarm of hundreds of thousands of dots, with each one following a unique path. The relationship between these paths brings the dots together to reveal the structure inherent in the mathematical rules that define the fractal.

Try running Ephemeral a few times to get an idea of the variety it’s capable of producing: there’s always something new to see!

What’s new in version 3.0.0

Version 3.0.0:
  • Drawing has been improved so that when different parts of the image overlap they blend together, giving a colourful, translucent appearance.
  • Animation is even smoother with Ephemeral now running at the same rate as the screen. Previously it was limited to 30 frames per second.
  • The Metal kernel used for drawing has been rewritten for much improved efficiency.
  • Metal is now a requirement as OpenGL/OpenCL support has been removed. Ephemeral 2.0.0 and 2.3.0 are still available for older Macs.

Installing v3.0.0 uses the usual process of double-clicking on the .screensaver file. But in macOS Big Sur 11+, getting it to actually work is annoying. The problem is that the developer does not have an Apple approved security certificate, resulting in the usual OS complaints and refusals to Open it. Therefore, you must do this more than usually contorted procedure: (1) Find the screensaver in the Finder. (You can do this by right-clicking (Control-click) on it inside the Screen Saver System Preferences tab). (2) Right-Double-click on the screensaver file. You may end up being thrown into an unresponsive black screensaver screen. Why, I have no idea. Ignore this nonsense and put your Mac to Sleep. Then Wake it up again and be sure you're logged in. (3) Now you should see the box on screen that lets you choose to "Open" the screensaver despite Apple's grumbling. Open it and you'll find you can now access it from inside the Screen Saver System Preferences tab and it WILL work. It's beautiful and worth the hassle.

Just tried this. It's very nice. However, on my two monitor setup, it only appeared on one monitor. I hope I'm missing something and that two monitors are supported.

Beautiful. One of the reasons I keep away from complex screensavers is because they eat the CPU and heat the computer. But this will barely uses CPU.

It works brillant with OS 10.8. And its grafik is very good. I love it meanwhile. No conflict with the system and on my iMac the CPU use is very low. A big thanks to the developer!

Has been my favourite screen saver for ages. Very happy that v1.1.1. works with OSX 10.7 Lion.
