As a long time user I don't find Rhyme Genie's activation as painful as Lord-Lighting. You only have to drag the activation code file to the desktop and start Rhyme Genie to automatically activate it. Updates have always been free and can be activated with the same code. Changing hard drives has no effect on Rhyme Genie in any way. Granted, you still have to get a new code if you buy a new computer but you get 3 activation codes with each serial number anyhow.

Competing rhyming dictionaries like MasterWriter and ThoughtOffice are substantially more expensive, haven't been updated in years, do not run on iOS and more importantly cannot match the accuracy of Rhyme Genie's intelligent rhyme. Nor do they or any other online rhyming dictionary offer syllable matching synonyms, a dedicated songwriter dictionary, integrated song titles, word filters and all the features that the free sidekick 'TuneSmith' provides.

Can't rate v5 - but only because Idolumic say "An activation code is linked to a specific computer and cannot be transferred. This is not meant to be mean spirited in any way."

Ha Ha - a smiling assassin.

I am unable to update to v5 without paying for another license and I can't even use v4 on my new computer - I paid for it too.

Beware.

Draw your own conclusions.

I strongly recommend evaluating ThoughtOffice.

Patrick,
As mentioned in my friendly support email this morning our licensing structure is not meant to be mean spirited in any way and has been unchanged since Rhyme Genie 1.0. We certainly thank you for being a valued user since 2010 and have shown our appreciation by providing you with 2 complimentary activation codes throughout the years.

In the last 3 years we have been working diligently to provide major updates of our software without any monetary rewards while keeping the costs of additional licenses very low. We do care greatly about offering compelling solutions with unmatched features but we cannot do so without being able to charge for our services.

We have always been forthright about our license policy on our website as well as on MacUpdate. As previously mentioned a newly purchased serial number for Rhyme Genie 5 ($7.95) allows you to request up to three (3) activation codes to install the software on different devices. This is a cross-platform offer which allows you to install Rhyme Genie 5 on Mac, a Windows PC as well an iPhone or an iPad with the same serial number. The activation code can unlock all future versions of Rhyme Genie provided the software is installed on the same device.

ThoughtOffice ($99) is certainly worth a look but it displays search results gathered from free online dictionaries such as www.rhymezone.com, www.onelook.com and www.wordpot.com. Rhyme Genie was developed to offer professional songwriters and creative writers a powerful tool that goes far beyond the capabilities of online rhyming dictionaries.

Versions, 3, then 4 and now 5 and the activation system is still CIA and FBI stringent. Boy, are these guys anxious. If you have a hard drive crash or swap your hard drive over or change computers between downloads of versions you will cop an extra fee just to use an app you have already paid for. The app is tied to the NIC address and your computer ID (hard drive) serial number, so if they change you pay extra. Just plain creepy and a little bit sick and very tight-arsed - but the app is brilliant so I just bit the bullet. Not happy though, I hate getting ripped off. If I pay for something I feel entitled to use it as I see fit. What do they think - I can use the app on two computers at the same time?

I evaluated the software for the four stars - not the method of licensing. As I said, the application is brilliant. It deserves four stars - maybe even four and a half stars - perhaps the activation issues I found, and you explained away, did influence the rating. Excellent answer. Excellent app. Excellent development and support. Mmmm! I'm tempted - five*****?

Well, as I said below in response to Ravenwolf, this is the Ant's Pants of rhyming tools. But I have just had to download a 248.7MB file for v3.3 after I had just done the same thing a week ago for v3.2. Why? For an update to the clipboard functionality. Why doesn't Rhyme Genie let me just update the core app for little fixes like this? Oh dear, now I have to activate it. Blimey - there goes another morning.

No worries about the new version overwriting the old version because it comes with the version number tagged so v3.3 will not overwrite v3.2.

Well, after the huge download I realised I had put the serial as the name of a folder into the earlier v3.2 folder along with the Rhyme_Genie_Activation.htm.

So all I had to do to activate the new 3.3 version of Rhyme Genie was to enter the Serial and click on the Rhyme_Genie_Activation.htm.

I just highlighted the activation key and clicked the activation button on the friendly activation window and that popped the key into place and it immediatley opened the app - all activated.

So activation is just two steps. Just remember to keep your key as a .zip file (Rhyme_Genie_Activation.htm) and your serial as the name of a folder inside your Rhyme Genie folder and future activations should be a breeze. Perfect!

As a songwriter I have been looking for a rhyming dictionary that can find family rhymes for the longest time. From a creative standpoint this software is second to none. It would be better without the activation and the app takes a while to start up but it is still a great tool.

I downloaded the demo and installed it. The first time I opened it, my Mac errored and did not open it (newer imac with 10.6.5). So I opened it again and the program's screen lost all of the information (not my mac screen, just the program's screen), so I started it yet again. On the third attempt I typed in testing and then beautiful, and I started to really look through the words it was offering, anal was offered as a song rhyme for beautiful! And the other rhymes were not inspiring at all (even though I guess "technically" correct). I went to shut down the program and it locked up, I had to open Activity monitor and force quit. Needless to say I uninstalled this and won't look back. Bummer, looked promising, but at least I won't have to go through that annoying activation process everyone is referring to! Bonus! :P. I'm new to macupdate, and have received some cool software from this service, but I am learning you need to read the reviews and pick and choose carefully, because there are some lemons amongst the fruits to choose from.

Thank you for testing Rhyme Genie's strength in the demo mode. We have never experienced similar startup or shutdown issues but they suggest that there might be a problem with your hard drive's file structure. Rhyme Genie utilizes a lot of hard disk space. You can use Disk Utility inside the Utilities folder of OS X to repair your disk permissions and verify your hard drive. OnyX is another free maintenance tool that you can download from MacUpdate to keep your computer system running smoothly.

The word 'beautiful' does not offer true perfect rhyme mates of multiple syllables so the intelligent rhyme will automatically switch to last-syllable rhyme mates. Please keep in mind that you are only looking at the first 9 rhyme mates in alphabetical order of the unabridged dictionary when Rhyme Genie is used in the demo mode. You will have to activate Rhyme Genie to have access to the special songwriter dictionary which does not include the word 'anal'.

Once the software has been activated you will also be able to utilize all of the 30 different rhyme types Rhyme Genie has to offer. Choosing the light rhyme, for instance, will present more unusual rhymes such as 'São Caetano do Sul' for the word 'beautiful'.

The new syllable-matching thesaurus is another great option to easily replace hard-to-rhyme words without changing the meaning or rhythm of a lyrical line.

Please explore Rhyme Genie's extensive help section in the lower right corner of the main screen to familiarize yourself with all the different rhyme types and all of Rhyme Genie's features.

You can also go to the 'compare' section of our website to get an overview of the features and see some of the positive reviews by major publications that Rhyme Genie was fortunate enough to have received within the last two years.

Of course we will be always glad to help, so please don't hesitate to contact us with any concerns or suggestions by clicking on "Support" on our website.

Oh dear, that is a bummer and I am so sorry you have turned away from best competitor to Masterwriter - except perhaps for ThoughtOffice (now that is worth a try). I am running Lion and v 3.2 of Rhyme Genie and I am about to upgrade to v3.3 - just need to set aside the time to activate it. I find it is flawless and even though it runs on Java it is way more stable than say, John Truby's Blockbuster. However, I am sure that if you have Lion installed - or even SL, you will find that the new version of Rhyme Genie serves you well.

I will write a full review of this software once I actually get my activation code and can use it in non-demo mode. However, if I had know this software had this sort of activation scheme, I would never have bought it in the first place. I would recommend finding something else based on the activation mechanism alone.

Thank you very much for purchasing Rhyme Genie. We hope that you will be completely satisfied after activating the software on your computer.

Rhyme Genie was born out of the need for professional musicians to find near rhymes just as easily and efficiently as perfect rhymes. Most software titles in the area of professional music production require some sort of activation. This is not meant to be mean-spirited in any way. For many software companies it's a simple matter of survival in a world where BitTorrent trackers such as Demonoid and Piratebay have hundreds of thousands of shared files and millions of peers.

Since its introduction Rhyme Genie has been fortunate enough to be a featured third party download at Apple, a shareware of the month in Mac Life and has enjoyed several small write-ups in established music publications. Yet anyone who compares the numbers of downloads of Rhyme Genie at macupdate to other applications will quickly realize that Rhyme Genie is a niche product with a very limited user base. It is by nature a labor of love for which a single software license has more significance than for a larger software company like Adobe, who require activation on their latest software updates as well. Thank you for doing your part in supporting the continued development of Rhyme Genie.

I decided to pick up a rhyming dictionary. It's a shame. Rhyme Genie is really pretty good.

To the dev: I've worked at a professional audio software company who developed strictly for Windows (you can narrow it down from there), and we received complaints about this stuff all the time. Being in customer service/tech support, we were in the unique position to be able to soothe the ticked off customers with a lot of tlc. Even with our being extremely attentive to their needs with regard to activation, the protection scheme still helped us lose a few customers here and there.

I don't envy your situation. You're right about torrents and pirate sites. Unfortunately, in protecting yourself, you do penalize those of us who will never pirate your software. Lose sales one way or the other. It'd be nice to see the customer get the benefit of the doubt.

Good luck!

I don't mind piracy protection schemes that tie a product to my email address, or some long serial number that I can cut and paste into a product. I don't even really mind instant activation schemes like the one used by Wingware's WingIDE. However, schemes that require me to put in a registration code and then wait any length of time at all for some other code to be emailed to me before I can use something that I just bought is very, very annoying.

Being a software engineer myself, I understand your situation; however, if you make me jump through too many hoops, which in my opinion you do, then I won't be very inclined to buy your stuff again.

Having said that, I think your product works well in all other aspects, and is much nicer to use than any online dictionary providing a similar service. Thank you.

Checked out a demo of the software and was fairly impressed. The price isn't an issue to me, but the online activation is really unfortunate. I have no desire to pirate software, or to give software to other people that I've paid for with my hard-earned money. I respect that piracy is a problem, but I don't like paying the penalty for it when I don't do it. I try to avoid apps that require activation beyond a simple serial number.

i would love to have this in my songwriters toolbox (on iphone as well, by the way).
and i deeply appreciate how much work must have gone into making it.
but the price is too high for me.

i want the developer to make his/her money back and continue development, but i would rather use the free online sites and my rhyming dictionaries (they're super-small and handy).

Thank you for being appreciative of the work that went into Rhyme Genie. There is a new tutorial video on Rhyme Genie's website that will illustrate the software's unique capabilities when compared to traditional and free online rhyming dictionaries. We also offer a full refund if you can find a rhyming dictionary that can match Rhyme Genie's power, speed and ease of use within 30 days of purchase. Unfortunately an iPhone version is not possible at the moment since Rhyme Genie requires too much storage space.

Rhyme Genie has over 9 million rhyme references that are individually indexed to allow for instant data access. Without these indexes the file size would be significantly smaller but searches would take exponentially longer. The graphic interface itself is very compact with a core size of 3 MB. It is increased only slightly by another 6 MB due to over 2500 conditional relationships that filter the dictionary entries according to the selected rhyme algorithm.

Thanks for the prompt response Idolumic, I'll get one of my daughters to download it as they have broadband. I do still think that the file size is a bit offputting but hope that the functionality makes it worthwhile.

Many Thanks...
