Firebox Desktop

2.1.2
13 July 2012

Mac version of Firebox, the popular encrypted database for the iPhone.

Overview

Firebox Desktop is the Mac version of Firebox, the popular encrypted database for the iPhone. Firebox Desktop has full editing, and direct syncing/merging with Firebox iPhone over wifi.

Your password can be different than the iPhone database you sync with, and you can sync between multiple devices.

Firebox uses best-practices encryption, with CBC-mode Blowfish encryption and PBKDF2 strengthened keys.

Edit the sample database to your liking, or define your own.

Firebox iPhone is not required to use Firebox Desktop. It does let you take your information safely along with you, however, and safeguards it if you should lose your phone.

Currently, Firebox Desktop lacks some of the newest features Firebox iPhone has, but it is under active development, and will be at feature parity soon.

What's new in Firebox Desktop

Version 2.1.2:

Features Removed:

  • iTunes File Recovery - this is no longer possible, due to changes Apple made.
Bug Fixed:
  • Deleted Items sometimes didn't stay deleted. This is now fixed in the case of syncing one iOS device. It can still happen if you sync multiple devices with the same desktop database. I am working on a fix for the general case.

I've been using Firebox on iPad and Macs for about three years. Versatile, secure, stable, easy to use. I use it for passwords, banking details, and a wide range of other confidential data. The OS X version is free, the iOS version inexpensive. My only quibble is that the iOS version does not have an iPad-specific variant but that is trivial - the information is all there and easily accessible.

Still doing the job, but I think it's dying. No response from the developer when I enquired about its future.
