It is not freeware. It requires a "donation" in order to unlock downloading and exporting videos. Didn't used it. I hate when people lies.

The app was upgraded to be compatible with OS X Yosemite. Unfortunately, it crashes as soon as it starts up. So it is not compatible. It is still a beta at version 0.5.1. And obviously it is seriously flawed. Hopefully the developer can fix it to a usable state. Here is the crash message: Exception Name: NSInternalInconsistencyException Description: Invalid parameter not satisfying: stateDirectoryURL != nil User Info: (null) 0 CoreFoundation 0x00007fff8fd4866c __exceptionPreprocess + 172 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x00007fff8a4a776e objc_exception_throw + 43 2 CoreFoundation 0x00007fff8fd4844a +[NSException raise:format:arguments:] + 106 3 Foundation 0x00007fff834543a9 -[NSAssertionHandler handleFailureInMethod:object:file:lineNumber:description:] + 195 4 AppKit 0x00007fff83e8def3 -[NSPersistentUIPreservedStateDirectory initWithStateDirectory:] + 132 5 AppKit 0x00007fff83e962ca +[NSPersistentUIManager(NSCarbonMethods) copyPersistentCarbonWindowDictionariesForBundleID:] + 231 6 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a89625b _HIPersistentUICopyPersistentCarbonWindowDictionariesForBundleID + 75 7 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a896200 _ZL34GetPersistenceDictionariesAtLaunchv + 52 8 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a8961c6 _Z29WindowStateInitFirstEventTimev + 9 9 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a895ba3 _FirstEventTime + 52 10 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a895a35 RunCurrentEventLoopInMode + 49 11 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a89576e ReceiveNextEventCommon + 179 12 HIToolbox 0x00007fff8a8956ab _BlockUntilNextEventMatchingListInModeWithFilter + 71 13 AppKit 0x00007fff83e94f81 _DPSNextEvent + 964 14 AppKit 0x00007fff83e94730 -[NSApplication nextEventMatchingMask:untilDate:inMode:dequeue:] + 194 15 AppKit 0x00007fff83e88593 -[NSApplication run] + 594 16 AppKit 0x00007fff83e73a14 NSApplicationMain + 1832 17 YouView 0x00000001000014bc start + 52 18 ??? 0x0000000000000001 0x0 + 1

Finally an YouTube app like the one from apple TV. My ATV died and replaced it with a 2011 Mini and I try to emulate some apps. Works on my 2011 Mini (Lion) and 2008 MBP (SL). The major plus is that you can access your account playlist. (no need to make them all over again) The major minus is that it only show max. 50 videos per playlist (not 200 as max from YouTube). I will donate even tho i don't care about DL feature. Great app. Make a nicer UI, increase the number of videos displayed to 200 and take my money :)

Dev says on his webzone that he's working on a successor called MotiOnline. So does that mean that YouView will be discontinued eventually? What would be the use of donating for full features if the app will be abandoned in the near future?

Review: This is the best youtube viewer/downloader IMO. I have tried them all, this has the most features, it's minimal, and has many nice features. You have access to you're channel, favorites and subscriptions. This alone is great, and not available on similar apps I have paid 5x the price for. You also have an extension for when viewing any YouTube links in Safari, they are instantly captured and auto play in the app. The app runs in the full window, unlike other apps that have the video and a sidebar or something open at the same time and no way to disable. And lastly, if you donate to him, I donated the minimum of 2-3 bucks I think it was, the app will download and convert the videos for you. And it does these two things very well, fast downloads and lots of video settings. The only thing I noticed bug wise, was when seeking with the nav bar on the bottom, sometimes, the bar will jump out of place and stay in the middle of the screen until you close the app. And also comments under video option does not work for me. Don't know why this app get mediocre rating...it's a beta, and the guy is asking for a measly 2 bucks for his download and converting features. I'm loving this app, I use it daily, and I look forward to the updates.

the developer is quick in replying. this app is simple yet promising. I love how it plays youtube without flash and unlike minitube it lets me access my account. And thank God the developer thought ahead and wrote add-on for browsers too.

Really good app. But for me personally, it misses some key features: 1. Rearranging subscription list and/or adding authors/channels to favorites. I only watch some of my subscriptions everyday, but most of them only once a month or so. Would like to have an ability to separate them. 2. In-app user playlists. So I could queue the vids and watch them on my tv screen while sitting on a sofa. With those features, I would gladly buy/donate the app.

Well, I don't know about this dispute going on below, but I do think so far that this app is actually quite nice. It's got a quick and minimal browser and loads H.264 videos. The beta version he's linked to also includes browser plug-ins for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox that will automatically direct YouTube links to YouView. I definitely prefer watching YouTube in this way. I starting using something called QuickTubePlayer the other day that allows you to drag or paste YouTube links into it to view videos in H.264. I was wishing that it had both its own browser and integration with other browsers, and now I come across YouView with both. I'm also really glad to see Chrome integration with YouView, since the main reason I'm looking at these programs at all is that ClickToFlash doesn't work with Chrome, and so I can't load H.264 videos directly within it (also the YouTube HTML5 beta stopped working today; I'm guessing it has something to do with the layout changes and will come back eventually). I'll keep testing this for a while, but if it turns out as well as it looks so far, I wouldn't have any issue sending $5 to the dev for the extra features and to encourage development.

OK, I didn't realize that you're a "kid" (your term, however you define it). Anyway, let's assume you are a kid who loves writing software and that's all great. Anything that may be amiss might be chalked up to just lack of experience. I'll respectfully decline to buy YouView because the other program is working great and it's free. I do think I made some good points, but I also realize I waste too much time trying to be right. Let's call it a truce, if you're willing, and I hope you'll keep writing great software-- just as long as you' don't do it for Microsoft. Good luck in your business. I'm going to go bake a lousy frozen pizza.

I ALSO CHECKED OUT THE DEVELOPER'S WEBSITE. NOWHERE DOES IT SAY THERE THAT YOUVIEW COSTS MONEY IF YOU WANT IT TO WORK AS ADVERTISED. YOU DON'T FIND OUT THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY CRIPPLEWARE UNTIL AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD IT AND TRY IT OUT. ALSO, THERE IS A LINK ON THE DEVELOPER'S WEBSITE HOMEPAGE THAT SAYS "DONATE." I GAVE IT ONE STAR BECAUSE IT DOESN'T PERFORM SATISFACTORILY UNDER ANY CATEGORY AS "FREE" PROGRAM IN ITS "FREE" VERSION: IN OTHER WORDS, AS A FREE UTILITY, IT DOES VERY LITTLE (FEATURES); FREE, IT DOESN'T WORK AS ADVERTISED (EASE OF USE); FREE, IT HAS VERY LITTLE WORTH (VALUE); AND FREE, YOU CAN HARDLY CALL IT STABLE IF IT DOESN'T PERFORM AS ADVERTISED (STABILITY).

IT SAYS HERE YOUVIEW IS "FREE," BUT IF YOU WANT THE MOST BASIC AND IMPORTANT FUNCTIONALITY OF A UTILITY LIKE THIS (NAMELY, LIKE DOWNLOADING CLIPS FROM YOU TUBE) THEN YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. I HATE BEING LIED TO JUST SO SOME COMPANY CAN TRICK YOU INTO DOWNLOADING AND TRYING OUT THEIR SOFTWARE! BE UP FRONT AND HONEST,OK!

Mr. Gecko was able to answer my questions and I am a little more confident than I was that it is safe to use the software. I'm going to continue to use it for the time being and see how it fares, and, hopefully, if I get VideoBox working correctly again or they fix whatever is preventing it from working with WebKit, I can compare the ease of use. Personally, I'd prefer the approach YouView takes. It would be nice if I could have an 'Open In YouView' option in Safari's Develop menu, as some point, or a way to direct youtube URLs to open automatically in YouView. One nice thing I enjoyed in VideoBox was the ability to que up a dozen youtube clips and then download and convert them all at once. So, it may be I'll need both apps and pick the right tool for the particular job. I've also tried yFlicks and it's installed on another computer. It's not as intuitive, but it's more into media management than just transcoding/downloading. For the happy browser, YouView is very handy. For someone needing to download and transcode, it's got real promise, so I'm raising my rating to 3, but it's starting to lean toward a 4 and may eventually get there as it's still being developed, I think.

I just downloaded this today because I was having trouble with VideoBox plug-in for some reason, perhaps since I installed then uninstalled Safari 4 Beta, so I looked around for something that would be handy for viewing and converting youtube videos for use on iTunes to sync with my iPhone and this looked promising. The free version worked fine for viewing so I went online and donated some money for key and received an email response almost immediately. I then was able to watch AND export a youtube clip (didn't try HD, yet) and it worked pretty well, although it doesn't automatically add it to iTunes like VideoBox would have done. My concern at this point is that an hour or two later I received an email from the developer asking if I had 'moved' the app, I guess wondering if I was using multiple copies or had put it on another network, which I hadn't, and a link if I wanted to 're-register' the key and a warning that it can only be re-registered 3 times per year. Thus, my concern is that somehow their spyware-bot is not only sending out information about my location, but is actually not doing it correctly, since the app was in the same place on the same network it had been since I downloaded and tested it shortly before. The gobal IP is the same, although my firewall would likely vary the publicly visible ports and will masq the MAC addresses to protect against intruders. I've emailed my query to the developer but have not heard back, yet. Any other donators having this problem with their key?

I normally have a rule about buying things before they reach 1.0: I don't. However, this thing works as advertised so far, and if a few bucks can get me the HD/high quality (if available) and saving that works, it's worth more than $1.99. Nice work!
