MPlayer OSX Extended16

17 July 2019

Multimedia player; extended version of MPlayer.

Overview

MPlayer OSX Extended is the future of MPlayer OSX. Leveraging the power of the MPlayer and FFmpeg open source projects, MPlayer OSX Extended aims to deliver a powerful, functional and no frills video player for OSX.

MPlayer OSX Extended is based on the original MPlayer OSX project but has since undergone fundamental changes, making it a modern and easy to use video player. Thanks to multithreading and 64bit architecture, MPlayer OSX Extended is one of the fastest choices on OSX to play back HD H264 videos. It also supports instant playback of MKV files and advanced styled subtitles in the ASS format. MPlayer OSX Extended uses the MPlayer open source project for decoding and integrates MPlayer's default key commands with a native OSX interface. Users of MPlayer should immediately feel at home and are able to tweak the fine details of the MPlayer invocation with binary bundles and additional command-line options.

Features:
  • Up-to-date builds of MPlayer and FFmpeg.
  • Clean and concise interface and preferences.
  • Support for MKV files with embedded fonts and ASS subtitles.
  • Multithreaded and 64bit-enabled for best playback performance.
  • Built-in support for a wide range of video and audio formats.
  • Fullscreen controls, playlist, inspector and interactive audio and video equalizers.
  • Capture screenshots of any video.
  • Automatic updates for itself and MPlayer binaries.

What's new in MPlayer OSX Extended

Version 16:
New:
  • Touch up player window, now using vector graphics for high-dpi screens
  • Remove need for rebuilding font cache (might need to reselect font in preferences)
  • Define UTIs for supported file types (so that Finder/Spotlight recognize them as movie/audio files)
  • Add support for HTTPS streaming
  • Enable automatic detection of multibyte encoded subtitle files by default
Fixes:
  • Fix crash on startup on macOS 10.13
  • Fix scrubbing bar not visible on macOS 10.11+
  • Fix video interpolation on macOS 10.11+
  • Fix cursor sometimes not unhiding when exiting fullscreen
  • Fix enabling video equalizer preventing playback
  • Fix all keys beeping when video equalizer is enabled
  • Fix skipping backwards in playlist from player window
  • Fix window sizing on retina screens

The other MPlayer of importance, MPlayerX, doesn't play back as nicely as MPlayer OSX Extended does as it's ridden with sync issues that the developer seems disinterested in fixing. But MPlayerX saves playback position in bookmarks, unlike both MPlayer OSX Extended and VLC, which is nice when you have a lot of videos to look trough. MPlayer OSX Extended also have much better DVD playback, also VIDEO_TS, compared to MPlayerX, but unlike VLC lacks ability to select episode on discs like TV-series, which is a let down. As VLC plays back all kinds of video as good as, or better than, MPlayer OSX Extended it's still my number one choice and MplayerX is the second (for material with lesser requirements). If VLC ever gets playback position bookmarks, then you won't need anything else. The Font Config Cache issue does detract form the expereince of using MPlayer OSX Extended. This time it took 5 minutes at first start up. None on the following.

Only one big complaint. Every time I change a font in my OSX's fonts folder Mplayer OSX Ext. blocks at launch with this dumb message: "Fontconfig needs to update its font cache. This can take up to a couple of minutes." This is massively annoying. No other program does this: VLC, MPlayerX, Movist, QuickTimePlayer, RealPlayer ...

If you haven't yet, scroll down and read some of the other posters. The download link on macupdate's webpage is full of bugs and does NOT run that well. But...not all hope is lost. https://sites.google.com/site/hermihg/ Hermi's fork of the mplayer app is exceptional and I use it over VLC now. Go to that site! It's the mplayer you've always been waiting for.

In contrast to this bug ridden version of "OS X Extended" The MPlayerX for Mac just works with few annoyances and have working hardware acceleration too. Only on Intel/10.6+ though. If you want an alternative on PPC I really feel VLC outdoes this player in v1.1.12 (preferred) as well as v2.0.3. VLC doesn't have hardware acceleration.

It would be great if you added adjustability to "skip 10 secs" function, for example I want to skip 3 secs backward in animes just to understand the beginning of a sentence. Also why can't I redefine hotkeys? Everything else works perfectly for me :)

First thing I wanna say is that there has been a "fork" of this MPlayer OSX Extended. So my testing and review it's based on that fork and not on the original one. You can get the latest version of MPlayer.app (the "fork") here: https://sites.google.com/site/hermihg/ I wouldn't say it's the best one, since MPlayerX it's really good as well, but I do find MPlayer more atractive because of: 1. Player design. It's really eye-candy, I like it more than MPlayer X and most of the functions I use (chapters ordering, audi or subs switching) can easily be reached through a prompt window inside the video (which I wasn't able to do that on MPlayer) Besides, fullscreen controls has been completely redesigned making it more gorgeous than the official rev14 2. Hi10P. I watch a lot of anime, and Hi10p has been the new profile almost every "serious" fansub has been rolling out. It also supports Ordered Chapters. 3. CPU Usage. I'm not sure if it's because of the MPlayer 2 binaries, but MPlayer.app performed better than MPlayerX on a 720p and 1080p Hi10p MKV. 720p used around 40-50% while MPlayerX used round 90-100% (this is on my MacBook Air 2010). What MPlayer needs it's to migrate all these fixes done by Hermi to the original fork at github, and after that, move it to the Mac App Store.

Well, rev13 nor rev14 seemed to work with any kind of simple file on my Dual 2.0 G5 with 4GB RAM. VLC in contrast just works, but I got Mplayer extended as it had been said it could do a better work with mkv files and to be fair VLC struggled with some of those files on my machine even with nothing else running atthe same time. Then I tried a mpg fil, asked MP to drop frames and after many many minutes, like 10 or so, it ran quite nicely. But 10 minutes? An mp4 file ran for a blink with sound, then nothing. On VLC 1.1.5, about everything runs fine. I also noticed the font-cache have to rebuilt on every start which is odd. Why no just on first run? I will try mkv-files but I'm not holding my breath. Why would it work better with just those? Anyone can recommend a specific version for mkv-files? I mean some earlier version must have been quite good, no? I will adjust my rating when a usable version shows up.

rev14 is a major step backwards. - audio/video out of sync for videos that play just fine in rev13 - image distortation/pixelation for a few frames after you seek forward/back (mainly in wmv videos) - still can't skip to previous video in playlist using keyboard shortcut option+command+left (i don't think this has ever worked)

There are a few troubles with mplayer extended that can lead to frustration. 1) Pause a movie and play something with quicktimeX. Mplayer window does not go fullscreen and is non response to keyboard and mouse double click 2) Non responsive to keyboard and mouse occasionally for no reason 3) If the mplayer window is closed, a movie won't play with drag drop to the icon. Replicate: launch mplayer close the window and drag drop into dock.

Rev13 actually made me switch from VLC. However, I have this little issue. When I click "X" (but not completely shut it down) on MPlayer, and then try to play another video, they video won't play, and I have to shut the application down, and they open the video again. VIDEO_TS/DVD support is still shitty too. Other than that it's all fine, complete deinterlace, resolution and post-processing options, virtual surround, and the BEST subtitle encoding I've ever seen, gotta love the semi-transparent black shadow, it's just PERFECT for ANY movie.

I noticed two more problems with rel13: 1. The Audio and Video equalisers do not keep the settings specified upon a player restart. 2. If one uses headphones for the sound and then he removes them while the player is playing a file the sound is not redirected to the speakers and the sound output stops. A similar thing happens when one suddenly inserts a set of headphones: the sound stops and does not get redirected to the headphones.

R13 will hang and stop responding when playing certain RMVB and MKV movie files. When opening these files in R13, it will start playing after a short pause, but the total playback time of the movie can't be determined, and the player will hang after 10 to 20 seconds. I have to press CMD+OPT+ESC to force quit R13. In R12 I had similar situation too, but it can be fixed by disabling the memory cache. But in R13, setting the cache memory size to 0 MB doesn't work. Guess I have to stick to R12 until it's fixed.

This is the best video player on MacOS X at this moment. However, I noticed a problem with this version: when the player is running, if the user double-clicks on a video file on Finder, the player does not load the selected video file. This only works if the player is not currently running. Also, on my MacBook Pro occasionally I hear some distortions to the sound of video files played by this player (in older versions as well) but I fixed the problem by specifying the additional option "-af volume=0:0". Shouldn't that be the default setting?

MPlayer OSX Extended is the best player for my mac, which can play movie of almost all codecs and is the only player that can render non-unicode ASS/SSA correctly. The only defect that I have found is that it uses too much CPU while playing 1080p movie comparing Plex which supports hardware decoding. (Well, this is not a defect of "MPlayer OSX Extended", but a defect of ported "mplayer". ) Anyway, great thanks to author's effort to keep updating the user interface and porting MPlayer to mac!!

Practically perfect in every way. Not only does it handle high definition MKVs with so much more grace than VLC, it also opens some files that simply cause VLC to crash. However, I do have one complaint and that is that even with AC3 and DTS pass-thru enabled, it will not communicate with my JVC RX-5052 receiver over optical. If the developers of this wonderful media player can fix this issue, I'll drop VLC forever. Promise. Keep up the good work!

I quite like MPlayer OS X Extended, and I use it as my default video player. For some reason, though, I've never been able to get its DVD playing feature to work properly. After opening a VIDEO_TS folder, MPlayer invariably hangs or just doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if it's because it's not capable of reading encrypted DVDs, but I can't find any documentation on this either way. If this is the case, it might be nice to be able to direct MPlayer to an existing copy of libdvdcss so it could decode encrypted VIDEO_TS. I would appreciate any feedback on this matter.

So, a single Developer/Packager can make a 10.4/PPC compatible Application which is also 10.6 64bit. You should notify multi billion dollar companies about this... They keep dropping 10.4 and even 10.5 /ppc support using Apple as excuse. See, with stock XCode, one can do this kind of support, backwards compatibility. Long live open source and caring developers really.

MPlayer Extended's in the house - and now with 64bit goodness! I haven't used Mplayer Extended for a while because I'd been satisfied with Movist and VLC, but the latter two apps are having issues under Snow Leopard: Movist chews through memory like Jaws on a surfer and VLC is acting stupid by hanging/crashing on exit. MPlayer Extended to the rescue! After install, this message appeared: fontconfig needs to update its font cache; this may take a few minutes (it did), but once completed, it was smooth sailing. Setup and configuration was a breeze, unlike VLC, which tends to have necessary settings hidden under arcane menu options. Very pleasant GUI and smooth, unjittery playback. Memory usage was impressively low. Unfortunately, I did run into a few problems: Remember last played movie and position doesn't work. (playlist option). ESC does not make fullscreen shrink to small screen it closes movie entirely! Oops! Not good. Most players just shrink the screen, not close it. I'd like to see an option to change this annoying behavior. Still, MPlayer Extended is a great improvement from previous versions and is good enough to use as your default media player. Nice work, devs. Thanks!

The new updates for Snow Leopard are fantastic, my CPU use has dropped considerably. This is a very solid media player, and I use both this and VLC as each have their respective strengths and weaknesses; both a substantially better than Quicktime + Perian for my needs.

Very good player. I always prefer it to VLC. I was using Movist for a long time but some times it does crash and doesn't work properly. The only thing which I miss from Movist is that in Movist the subtitles in wide screen movies are on the bottom side of the screen, not the movie. To be more clear about that; if some movie is wide screen and you have horizontal black bars on the top and bottom side of the screen, Movist shows the subtitles there, whereas Mplayer shows them directly on the movie. Is there any possible way of utilizing the whole screen at Mplayer?

Best choice in Mac for those who always watch movies with Unicode SSA/ASS subtitles like me! I hope there will be more options to render the subtitles in different ways (Currently (rev11) only resize is supported. ), such as options to change the transparency of the subtitle which is supported in Korean KMPlayer for Windows. Anyway, thanks to the Author, I can enjoy my Anime collections in Mac now!!

This has become my default media player, though VLC is sometimes needed for trickier files. The only thing I really miss from VLC, though, is the 10 second jump when hitting an arrow key/the forward button. MPlayer seems to jump about 1 minute, and you have to hold alt to get a short jump. Any chance of getting a way to specify the jump duration?

This is an awesome player. I love VLC, but it has trouble with subtitles at times. This player always seems to pull through. My only complaints: The decoding and filters are a bit of a headache to set up if you don't know the difference between them. And it doesn't provide any real explanation of each setting, or which is better/worse. I want it to look/sound as best as possible, but I have no idea which settings are suited for that. This is one area where VLC has this player beat. The default subtitles (when they work) in VLC are crisp and anti-aliased and always appear in a good, readable size that isn't too big or small. With this player you have to tweak them a bit to get it to look good. Again though, this is a fantastic player. Keep up the good work devs!

This is brilliant player, this to me looks and behaves like an app that's written specially for OS X. I have a PowerMac G5, this version feels lighter than the original MPlayer 1.0 rc2. This to me is like KMPlayer of Windows for OS X, plays virtually all the formats. Thanks to the developers involved in the MPLayer OS X Extended app for their effort, no good good deed in my opinion should go unappreciated.

Great to see this updated again - v11 is the only player with smooth 720p playback on my ancient Dual G5...

MPlayer in general runs better on both my new Macbook Pro and my old G5 tower. MPlayer OSX Extended is the best way to use MPlayer. The GUI excellent.

Excellent software. Simple yet effective. Seems to do better than Quicktime in many cases and is definitely better at decoding than VLC. All it needs is good, clean multithreaded FFMPEG decoding support (it's currently in there, but it's noted as buggy) and this will be the perfect media player. Keep up the good work!

MPlayer OSX Extended seems very good overall, but I've never managed to get it to properly open a VIDEO_TS folder. With encrypted disks it fails to load at all, and with unencrypted disks, it displays the picture with errors (i.e. weird colours, broken picutre, etc.). All discs that have failed in MPlayer work in VLC and Apple DVD Player. Anyone else have more luck with this aspect of the app?

I have the ancient version, the one built years ago and it can play h264 720P HDTV on a Mac Mini G4 1.42 Ghz. It is totally impossible using any player on that configuration. Even Apple's highly optimized h264 decoder fails. Regardless of configuration you have, just try it once and you will be really surprised. BTW, as you can notice, they didn't abandon 10.4 people too ;)
