I love this application and find it incredibly useful. I simply can't do without it. But there is one drawback, which has already been mentioned here by another user, and that is that one is required to do all of one's listing tasks in the very small "Preferences" window - the size or shape of which cannot be changed in any manner at all. If one is seeking to list a LOT of one's favourite applications into aLunch it can take far longer than it really should to do so - largely because one can see so little in the window. Why it wasn't made with the usual resize--handle, is mystery. Mr Developer, if you could attend to that, it would become a truly excellent and useful application in ALL respect @.

Love the program, but sometimes after a restart it does not work. It shows in the menubar, but when clicking on the icon nothing happens. Running 10.8.4 on an iMac (10,1). Thanks

If the Dock is getting to small for the number of applications, this is a great way for quick and easy access to your favorite apps - straight from the menu bar. Nice!

On my PowerMac w/ Leopard 10.5.8 This update causes the app to hang temporarily at launch and periodically with use thereafter. If it helps get this sorted out; I'm getting this message in System console: [0x0-0x2b02b].net.mactips-lib.aLaunch[773] aLaunch: unknown type name "ICN#". "l8mk". "il32". "icl8". "icl4". "ics#". "s8mk". "is32". "ics8". "ics4" . Thanks for a great app!

aLaunch does exactly what I'm looking for, but it's a pain to use it. Why? It constantly crashes and locks up (version 4.1). Most importantly, I have twenty apps listed and it's using 68mb of memory - this is unacceptable for a menubar launcher, which should use at most 10mb (in my opinion). This memory usage is higher than Dropbox, which is syncing 48gb and over 10,000 files. Also, it shows "Recent Apps" at the top of the menu, even though I've turned "Recent Apps" off (turning it on doesn't enable it either). If these problems were corrected, I'd have no problem giving it five stars.

Clean and simple launcher. Works fine for me in Leopard and Snow Leopard. I do have and use PathFinder and it has a similar launcher as an option, HOWEVER, its global menu icons and text are too small and can NOT be changed like other parts of PathFinder. Alunch works fine, although I do think aLunch is a strange name. Why not call it aLaunch or iLaunch?

aLaunch is easy to set up and use. I rely on heavily and it has never let me down. With over 200 applications and counting scrolling through my Applications folder is a bit overwhelming. aLaunch allows me to group applications that I commonly use into manageable categories making it easy to access them quickly. Highly recommended.

I use aLunch dozens of times a day. What an amazingly powerful and versatile program -- for free! The only thing I may use more often during the day is A-Dock, which I also highly recommend. Thank you, developer, for this amazing gift to Mac users!

I'm a new mac user, so I've been looking for a nice application launcher. Tried Quicksilver but typing everytime I want to start an aplication is not my thing. Liked Overflow but 15 buck's for such a simple application, it just woudn't do for me. So I started looking, and stumbled on this little application, and for now, I'M LOVING IT. Nice work guys!

Wonderful little application, this one turned out to be, I'm loving it. It's fast, simple, easy to use, and no drawbacks whatsoever. Some people I talk to recommended that I cut down on my time used up by launching everything either from the dock or from the Applications folder, and once I tried this, I fell in love with it. I recommend this one above all else. Nicely done, Dev.

Could you make it so that the Active Apps show show up in the Launcher Window also? And make the Launcher themeable? This way I could completely replace my dock! :D

I've used this program mainly for the Fast Launcher, I just love it. It would be really nice if I could toggle it with a mouse click or a combination of Keys such as Command + Backspace. Which is strangely what my Mouse does for it's 4th button.

I must say. I've used Himmel Bar before, but it wasn't as customizable as this was. So easy to use and never crashed on me Once. I'm using this on the new Aluminum iMac with Mac OS X 10.5.1. It has never failed one me ever. There really isn't anything I want to change about this. Keep up the work. Keep it Free.

For some reason aLunch 2.5.1 download from MacUpdate site crashes on launch with O SX 10.3.9 but doesn't crash downloaded from here > http://mactips-lib.net/m/software/alunch/en/main.html ... also after installing from the link , in the aLunch preferences when you click on the 'check for updates' button the software update window pops open and says "A new version is available!" "aLunch 2.5.1 is now available (you have 2.5.1 for mac OS X 10.3.9) Would you like to download it now?" If you click on 'install update', it will install the version that crashes. The link mentioned above is also includes in the aLunch preferences Software update window but I got 'error 404 not found'. The link must be broken because when I copy and pasted it to the browser I got there without a problem.

It still doesn't display a directory's contents, which even the Dock will do (as the message below this one notes... and right-click works as well as left-click-and-hold and is faster to boot). Another command further down says: "if you have oh say, over 150 applications, you do not have to scroll up and down a huge drop-down menu to get to your chosen file, you just arrange your categories/folders in alunch in the most efficient way desired" I've already done that *on the disk*. All I want is for aLunch to show me the same hierarchy in the menu, automatically. Let me make a folder the root of a menu tree, with an "open folder" item at the top or bottom. Without that this is less useful than the Dock, and that's pretty sad.

I agree with SPLUNK23 -- This is THE BEST menu launcher around -- and I've been trying them all since my Dock became overcrowded with dozens of microscopic icons. (Was hoping Apple would address this better in Leopard. Oh well.) I now keep my Dock empty and let it fill with apps once they are launched from the aLunch menu. One request: In the Preference > Item Selection configuration -- would it be possible to support drag & drop in addition to the +/- assignments?

i have been using alunch on a computer at work for a while (the computer had stuffit expander, so i was able to extract alunch from the sitx archive). it really is the best menubar launcher for os x, really. you can launch any type of file on your system and have full control over the categorization of the files/applications you decide to place in the menu bar. meaning, if you have oh say, over 150 applications, you do not have to scroll up and down a huge drop-down menu to get to your chosen file, you just arrange your categories/folders in alunch in the most efficient way desired. the only thing that stops me [and a whole lot of others] from using it on there machines at home, is that alunch is distributed as a .sitx archive. most people stopped using stuffit products a long time ago, for good reason (they are bloated pieces of shareware rubbish) and there is no way on earth most people are going to install an extra compression/ decompression utility solely for the purpose of unzipping one application. if the author changed from sitx to zip, bz2 or just a plain dmg, i am certain there would be a much larger and more satisfied user base. until then i will have to stick with himmelbar on my mac at home. i am just letting the developer know that this is a fantastic piece of software, but he is really limiting his potential user-base by sticking to the sitx format. otherwise, from the amount of time i have spent using it at work, i can say this is simply the best menubar launcher out there. please, change to a different compression format.

I wanted to like this. But... having to add a separate entry for EVERY application you need to launch makes this actually *less* useful than a folder in the dock, and takes more work to configure. It should be possible (for example) to get a submenu containing all Apple applications by adding "/Applications" as a folder. The first or last entry of that submenu could, perhaps, be one to open that folder in Finder if you want that functionality as well.

While I prefer just using a folder in the dock to perform this functionality, this looked like a nice alternative. Unfortunately the developer choose to go the odd route of SITX compressing a DMG. Perhaps he is not aware that Apple ceased bundling Stuffit Expander with MacOS X years ago. I am glad to be rid of it. Hopefully he will release his next version in a standard MacOS X archive format (compressed DMG, or ZIP).

Needs the ability to have the name of the folder different from the neame shown in the menu. For example, my mac is set up for shared use so I have three application folders named "Applications": /Applications, /Local/Applications, and ~/Applications, which I want to show up as "System", "Local", and "Personal".
