Twitterrific for Mac 5.4.7

05 June 2021

Effortlessly read and compose tweets.

What is Twitterrific for Mac

Twitterific has been re-imagined from the ground up to be the Mac's most friendly, powerful and modern Twitter client. Twitterrific makes Twitter fun.

  • Twitter Your Way - A clean, uncluttered timeline featuring just the content you care about; tweets are presented in chronological order and other people's likes aren't placed in your timeline.
  • Designed for macOS - Twitterrific feels right at home on the Mac, with support for Notification Center, Retina displays, built-in sharing, beautiful animations, full-screen mode, and more.
  • Timelines Galore - Take control of your tweets with multiple timeline windows from the same account or multiple accounts, all organized on your Mac’s desktop.
  • Full Accessibility - Navigate the timeline, compose tweets, and even attach image descriptions quickly and easily using Voice Over.
  • Tweet In Style - Twitterrific's appearance panel supports themes, lets you customize fonts and type sizes, and even lets you control how media appears in the timeline.
  • Read Anywhere - Whether you use Twitterrific on your iPhone, iPad, or another Mac, the app automatically syncs your reading position for a seamless Twitter experience.

I love he app. It's been working great for me and in any case, tremendously better than the official client ever did (so I sure don't miss it). I dropped one star though for one simple (but really annoying) reason: the zoo can't remember windows size and position. I like to have multiple windows open to follow different lists and I have to re-organize the windows every single time I relaunch the app.

Now that Twitter Inc. have abandoned their own Twitter application, I've chosen Twitterrific. It's not an outstanding app, but it's perfectly fine for what it needs to do. The GUI is a bit old-school, and I would also prefer my own font selection plus theming support. Moreover there is some sort of internal programming bug regarding the three-dot-menus ("uncaught exception was raised"), which I noticed in macOS debug mode: it doesn't crash the software, but it's close; strange that this passed through App Store review. The navigation is fine, but not 100% intuitive. But at least the app lets you connect directly to Twitter. Tweetbot on the other hand doesn't work without push via the developer's website, which is preposterous. So even though it's far from perfect, I can recommend Twitteriffic.

Still looks like it's stuck in 2009. Offers nothing you don't get with every other twitter client, except for multi-colored tweets (yawn). It works, and that's the best I can say about it. It's not that it's bad—it just isn't special. And it certainly isn't worth $20 compared to Tweetbot (or even Twitter's own app).

Twitterrific was my goto Twitter client since ~2009. But Twitterrific is not stable in OS X 10.11. It crashed almost every time I tried to insert an image & as of 10.11.3, the menus no longer work. Given Little Icon Factory hasn’t updated it since 2013 & it’s not listed on their site among OS X app. If you have it, and haven’t upgraded to 10.11, either don’t upgrade to 10.11 or find a new client. Sad since this was a great app, & even sadder that LIF decided to abandon it after being among the best Twitter clients for years.

For me personally, Twitterrific is neither worse, not better than any other application. Nothing special. If you use Twitter just to read news or tweets from people you follow, I guess any Twitter app will do. Correct me if I'm not right.

A lot of Twitter apps are available and I have tried all of them. For me personally Twitterific is by far the easiest to use, not saying it is the most powerful. If you have $10 left and use Twitter a lot on your desktop/laptop you really need to consider this. Great app !

Thank goodness for a high quality Twitter application which is not on the App Store only highway to hell. Also supports Snow Leopard. Good job Icon Factory. You made your sale today for those two reasons. Snow Leopard is Apple's XP. It just works. Legacy support where possible will make sales.

I don't know if I like Twitterrific. It is easy to use and very stable, but it is lacking some features I don't want to miss anymore. Searching for people per example. I like the colors and the UI, what doesn't fit into the picture are those ugly icons on the top. If you look for a Twitter client that isn't expensive and has Tweetmarker support it is still a good choice 'cause it is in active development and the support via Twitter is very good. You always get an answer, even if people just troll.

Twitterrific is still my favorite Twitter clients. It doesn't get into the way while I use it, looks pleasant and disappears once I'm done tweeting. Also I like that there are some options to customize how it behaves, notifies and looks like. Still, I would really like to see a lower price. I guess it would be much easier for others to buy this if it was, let's say - 7.99USD or even 4.99USD. Otherwise great! Thanks.

How does one hide the dock icon at the bottom? Having the top menu and bottom menu is ridiculous. In the previous version, I had just the top and was able to turn off the bottom icon (I think). I've emailed support, but no response. Anybody know how to turn off the bottom dock icon for Twitterrific? I'll go back to the previous version if not and waste my upgrade fee... Thanks

This is the best these guys can do? Twitter clients that don't provide notifications fail. Why not save $10 and just use your browser? This thing feels old, tired. It replicates twitter.com, but with a native OSX interface and some decent refinement. Sadly, Twitter is past the stuffy old, "hey look, I got a list of tweets" and has moved into a more dynamic, active service. Who needs trends to occupy your main window? Who needs all that chrome? And to force new tweets to the top of the application is aggravating. A total miss and reminds me of the old 2008 Twitter days. It's 2011. And Twitter has long left these guys behind. I can see problems with Twitter's OSX client, but it's a heck of a lot better than this, and free. A total disappointment. But that's okay. Knowing these guys, they'll provide a handful of updates and that'll be all she wrote. Too busy spending your money I suppose...

Of all the Twitter clients on OS X, I probably like the 'HUD' style interface of Twitteriffic the best. Unfortunately the lack of support for multiple accounts (without logging out/in again) is a deal-breaker for me. Would be nice to see this app updated with new features but as other have pointed out, IconFactory seem to be concentrating their efforts elsewhere at the moment.

Sorry Guys, but this App has seen it's rise. It is just simple - very much outdated! if this was free (w/o Ads), I could like it. But compared to all the good twitter clients for the iOS, this is just plain ridiculous. even compared to Mac SW clients (some free), this is so useless. want it simple? keep a tap in Safari open with being logged in on Twitter. End of story. PS: Yes, I dont like IconFactory and Panic, as they always do the same. Invent really cool Software, get an Award for it (bravo) and from that point on, no more innovations! but people buy it nonetheless. Not my style!!

I love Twitterrific because it's minimal usage of desktop space, and supports dock icon turnoff. The only big disadvantage is that it does not support multi-accounts, as in Twittie or Socialite; the only way to see different accounts on Twitterrific is to log out and login again. I've try other two apps and I still like Twitterrific better. Today I have find the way to solve my dilemma with multi-accounts on Twitterrific! For people who have 2+ Twitter accounts, I found a usable solution to force Twitterrific to open another copy, so copies of Twitterrific can co-exist on menubar, and follow individual account simultaneously! To do so, make a second copy your Twitterrific.app and paste it on your desktop, rename it and then put it back next to your original copy. I renamed my 2nd copy as "Ollie.app", the name of Twitterrific's Mascot. Have your original Twitterrific open and put it to work. When you open the renamed copy, it will login into the account you already opened in your 1st Twitterrific copy, but you can change it easily. In your rename copy, press Commend L to show the login window, now login to your 2nd account. To distinguish the renamed copy from the original, you can change the alert sound, and re-color the meun icon to easily spot the difference on menubar! The only drawback of this method is that when you put both copies as 'Open at login' item, both copies would login into the same Twitter account you last login, I guess this is because both copies using the same preference file. So make sure to use Commend L trick again on one of your copies. Maybe in the future Twitterrific would support multi-accounts, but in the meantime I am pretty happy to use this method to follow my Twitter accounts.

I agree with many people here saying Twitterrific for mac seems to have fallen well behind, due to the efforts placed on the iphone app. I got Twitterrific for free in the macheist nanobundle. It was my first desktop twitter app, so keep that in mind. Because at first, I thought it was fantastic. I liked the growl notifications, I liked the menubar icon with no dock icon forced upon me, and it was easy to tweet and reply to tweets. And I really liked the notification sound of the bird chirping, cute! So it led me to download the free iphone app. What a huge difference! So much more functionality to the iphone app. Which then led me to explore other desktop twitter apps with more functionality. I ended up with Tweetie and now Socialite. What I love about Tweetie is I can click on a user and really dig into that user's info, such as tweets, mentions, and most importantly to me, their user info (location, website, bio, etc) No easy way to do that on the desktop app for Twitterrific. Sure, you can on the iphone version! Twitterrific and Tweetie use about the same amount of system resources, which is very low, so that to me was a non-issue. Tweetie doesn't allow me (that I know of) to hide the dock icon and I'm not a big fan of this. Overall, after checking out the competition, I am disappointed in the Twitterrific desktop app. Once it catches up to its iPhone counterpart, it will be great. Until then, I'll stick with Tweetie and even Socialite.

Twitterrific is an excellent desktop solution for Twitter, especially for users who are looking for a minimalistic user-interface and have no desire to spend hours every day organizing follower groups or engaging in endless back-and-forth conversations. If your workflow is like mine, you simply want to get your updates quickly and post a Tweet with as little hassle - and in as few key strokes - as possible. Twitterrific does this with a simple keyboard shortcut. It's easy on the eyes, well designed from a UI point of view, and is light on resources. Sadly, the Mac version is being neglected by the developers and is lacking at least one useful feature for "speed" users, like myself... a retweet shortcut. Search would be a nice addition, too. If you don't want to pay to register the app, Pwitter is a similar, free program, albeit not quite as pretty.

I was hoping for a beefier feature list for this update. I like Twitterific (tried the rest, keep coming back) but it desperately needs a way to separately view Direct Messages and Replies (tabs, or whatever). Including a URL shortener (choice of multiple services with account linking would be nice) is also something I would like to see, but not on the top of the list. And while I am on the feature request soapbox, I'd also like to see an option to open links in the background, an "unread" count in the "title bar" (or whatever that top portion is on an HUD window). A pref to prune read tweets after X hours/days. And a pref to allow clicking of the Growl alerts to jump to the respective Tweet. Some sort of Groups feature would be nice as well. I did contact the devs a while back and was told that many of these were on the list for future updates, but was not given any sort of timeframe.

This update address' my primary complaint, which was all messages being marked unread upon launch. The addition of https communication is long overdue but finally included. It's the best Twitter desktop app for Tiger, and possibly OS X. My only complaint is that it is overpriced, really it shouldn't cost more than $10. If the ability to manage your Twitter account were included it would be worth it's current price.

If you're a casual user of online services (which twitter users often are), do not use this. It's a software you have to pay for, which in its default configuration sends your twitter password over the wire in PLAINTEXT which means every schoolboy with a laptop can sniff your twitter password in a public hotspot. Without manual command line configuration (hey! this is mac, not linux) you can't change this insecure behavior, which is not acceptable in 2009. A new software where this should have been fixed has not been published in almost a year. In the light of recent twitter "password problems" I would actually stay away from twitter or at least 3rd party applications anyway.

I love Twitter, and when I found this app it looked really cool, so I gave it a try. It's very sleek and has a nice interface, however: I have found Twitterrific to be extremely hit-and-miss when it comes to connecting to Twitter and getting tweets. About 5/6 of the time, I have to use Twitter's web interface instead, because Twitterrific is complaining about various server errors and things about the server complaining that I sent a bad request when I quite clearly have not sent ANY requests in the last hour– I just turned on my Mac; it's not possible. Yes, it's a great Twitter app, and I'm perfectly fine with the hourly ads. But the connectivity issues themselves can on occasion make this app a real hassle to use.

Twitter seemed really fun and cool at first, and Twitterific was a brilliant free program that made it that much better. And then they decided to start charging for it...which is fair enough, of course, as they spend time developing it, but $15 is simply a rip off for this very basic program. I would have gladly paid $5 or maybe even $7 for this, but $15 is just over the top for one little window that can't even remember its contents between launches and makes me keep marking the same messages read everytime I start it up. And to me, there's no point in even using Twitter if I have to keep going to a webpage to check it every time. Net result: I simply stopped using Twitter. I think it could have really taken off if this great client remained free and was cross platform, but I find the ads irritating, was annoyed that I had to keep marking the same messages read everytime, and found it surprisingly slow to start up for such a simple little app, adding that much more of a delay between when I log in to my computer, and when I can start actually doing anything (several other programs also launch at login, and Twitterific's surprisingly slow startup time added a not-insignificant extra delay to the process). At some point this client stopped being about bringing something new and cool to everyone, and the focus was shifted to making money rather than providing a quality product. That's when it started to go downhill. Granted, the actual Twitter service itself has not become commercial, but like I said, to me it's useless if I have to keep checking a webpage; it really needs a decent client, and sadly, Twitterific stopped being decent right around the same time it started costing way too much money. Quite frankly it's not that much of a disappointment anyway; over the year or so that I used Twitter, it slowly morphed from timely quotes and tidbits and links to cool things, to a boring play-by-play of the most mundane aspects of people's lives (e.g. "Just got out of bed. Time for coffee." or "Dropping the kids off at school." ... good lord, who cares?!). I think we lost the point of this somewhere. But this is just one person's experience.

A small feature request: For those who use other means of keeping an eye on their friends' Twitters, an option to show only the text field?

Looks great! And works great as well. Save for one little quirk. It seems it required you to be logged out from the Twitter.com website before posting a message with Twitterific. Would be nice if it worked independently of whether you're logged in or not on Twitter.com. Anyway, it's a great little gadget!

This is great. Now i just have to cross my fingers, and hope that more people start using the service. Will there be a Windows version? I'm stuck using a pc most of the day.
