PrefEdit4.4

06 April 2020

Inspect and edit all preference settings for OS X apps.

Overview

PrefEdit is a utility that allows you to inspect and edit all preference settings for OS X applications. The settings are displayed in a browser and can be edited by simple point-and-click operations. You can also do a full-text search on all settings, or clean up unused entries of applications that have been uninstalled.

PrefEdit can access all preference settings of "well-behaved" Carbon and Cocoa applications. Older Mac applications running in the Classic environment used a totally different system for storing preference settings. The settings of such programs do not appear in PrefEdit.

Warning: If you edit, add, or delete preference values of application programs or the OS X operating system, you should know what you are doing. Inappropriate values can cause serious malfunctions in the system, which could destroy important data or create other unexpected effects.

What's new in PrefEdit

Version 4.4:
  • When saving property list files in XML format, this version enforces more rigorous syntax rules regarding values that contain invalid control characters. This policy is stricter than the policy currently implemented by Apple in macOS, but ensures that files remain compliant with the XML standards. When reading files, PrefEdit uses the same guidelines as macOS. XML files with slight errors will be silently accepted if macOS also tolerates them.
  • Property list files can now still be modified and saved in cases where macOS has lost their type information, e.g. after restoring a file without file extension via the Versions feature.

Regarding the comment I made below. I know that MacUpdate list this as free. But, the "More Information" link takes you to their website, that lists the 7 Euro price. Maybe it's a time limited demo, or does the developer website need updating?

I was curious as to price so I looked it up. A single user license is 7 Euros or $10.46 US dollars. Europe is 7 Euros plus VAT.

I like this very much. Sometimes I'll ask a developer about something and they'll tell me it's available via a hidden pref and to set it like so... defaults write com.xxxx.yyyy BlaBlaBla I don't much like black box solutions, I want to know what's there before I change it and I want to see that it's changed after I execute the command. This lets me see what I'm doing or about to do and lets me see that it's been done. My ratings reflect the fact that it's new to me and I don't know what other features could be offered and I don't know how stable it is yet.
