I just bought this program really love it. It's fun and easy to take your iPhone around a room in your house, snap a photo, enter in info about the photo either by text or by voice (I use the voice feature) and then save what you've entered to another device (i.e., your laptop, desktop computer or iPad. ) It only took me about 15 minutes to go around my livingroom. I plan to take one room a day until I've got a complete inventory.

I purchased this application back in 2011 and I am still using it to this day!! This has been hands down one of the best apps that I have invested in for my Apple and my house. The developer is dedicated and the program continues to evolve and get better and better. I highly recommend this app. Side Note - The new Mobile BackUp feature with support on the iPhone/iPad is by far my favorite. I was out shopping with my wife and I could not rememeber the details/specs for some of our furniture. Luckily I had the Mobile BackUpApp and was able to look the product up. It helps that I am very thorough when it comes to properly filling out the attributes and taking pictures of my belongings and documenting them in the program.

Almost perfect! I only wish they’d include some form of analysis and charts, i.e. a pie chart showing the value of my household when looking at the various categories, a bar graph showing purchases by year and so forth. I’d also like to customise some of the text reports and found the present features in this respect lacking. I’ve approached the developer months ago but sadly nothing has been improved. I only hope the application remained in active development and that they’re looking at a better way to visualise and search for household items.

Wow! Thank you for this awesome app! The remote apps are excellent additions to this app, if only the Photo Remote app were universal that would be outstanding! Haven't had to email the dev at all on this app, it just works... so apple like :)

I paid for it online August 17 (i.e. about 20 minutes ago) and got a an emailed receipt and a license number... but with no sign of how to download it. Nada. I have trailed around the macupdate site looking for a non-trial place to download it from. Or am I supposed to download a trial version and then record the license key number there? Please make it easy for your customers instead of very frustrating. I'm now alienated from Home Inventory and wary of buying more products from you.

I went to the program after Quicken stopped supporting home inventory and Mac in general, several years ago. It is so much better and easy for me - very novice person- to use. But the best part is the customer service. Kevin always answers my questions quickly and gives advice that I can understand. Wish all software was this easy to deal with!

Ok, so I downloaded this product, and went to open it from my downloads folder and it came up with the window that it was initializing and then nothing? So I clicked on the downloaded folder again and now nothing happens. Am I missing something??

2.5.0 still has the bug with column widths not preserving their resized positions between sessions -- they always revert to the default widths.

Almost two years after I wrote a 5-star review about Home Inventory here, I'm even more impressed. Not only has the app evolved even more, but the developer (Kevin) continues to be one of the most responsive I've ever encountered. This "weekend" I re-installed Home Inventory on a new Mac and emailed him about a small issue (that was actually my fault) and he replied. Then during the course of our email exchange he continued on his iPhone (obviously trying to keep a customer happy during his own weekend...something he certainly didn't have to do). I just want to say that some other developers should take a lesson from this and maybe be even half as responsive as Kevin.

My first post on macupdate, wow, I deserve a cookie. I just purchased this product and I must admit - I'm impressed! I will spare all of you the usual posting lingo, "ease of use, great layout, wow, handy app" etc. Also, I will spare you of any sort of tech speak or terminology that may baffle most people. My issues, if any, is whether I purchased the right product or not. Let me explain. Don't get me wrong, I like this app and I am not going to trash or give it a poor rating or review; however, I just finished looking at another product called MyStuff. Is anyone familiar with this product? It looks great. What I like most is the ability to add video. Perhaps Home Inventory does this and I've missed it, but as of now I haven't been able to locate this feature. Also, I like the warranty manager and how it allows a user to view a progressive timeline, not text, of a product's warranty end-date. My explanation will not give it justice. You will have to see it for yourself. Finally, I like the FileFinder Palette. Wow! You can add a user manuel in PDF with ease and directly from the print menu. Nevertheless, Binary Formations (Home Inventory) already has my money. There's no going back; however, so will Minder Software (MyStuff). My hope, my hope is that Binary Formations (Home Inventory) makes the improvements I've mentioned above. I like the product, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will continue to improve on an already great product. 4.5 Stars, but will still test drive MyStuff. Just being honest. Thanks!

Version: 2.0.0 Preview
First, I'd like to address the comment I made in my original review regarding the developer not replying to my email. When he happened to see my review here, he immediately contacted me, mortified that a customer had emailed him and he had failed to reply. He said he simply didn't receive my email and I sincerely believe him. More importantly, I've had some time to look over version 2.0 of Home Inventory and I'm VERY impressed! Not only has the developer addressed all my issues with the app, he's addressed some I hadn't even thought of. As a home burglary victim (nearly $30K in unrecoverable jewelry...without insurance riders) I can't begin to tell you how important an app like Home Inventory is. Insurance adjusters have some wiggle room when you're sitting across the desk from them, and if you have all your receipts, a set of pictures, descriptions of each item taken and where it was in your house, or office...you're in a much better bargaining position than without these things. There is not another app...not one...that even comes close to what I see in version 2.0 of Home Inventory. And from having chatted with the developer in email I can assure you he honesty cares about his application and wants to ensure it is the very best in it's class. I am very impressed with someone who has these goals in a small business and puts them ahead of greed. I would highly recommend v2.0 of Home Inventory.

For functionality I would give this a higher rating, but it falls short in several areas, plus the developer simply does not reply to support email. I sent an email about a month ago regarding an issue, and then again a few ago...nothing. If you're the type of user who wants an application's UI to open where "you" want it and not where the "developer" wants it...you will not be happy. This app opens in the upper left quadrant of your monitor no matter how many times you drag it to the center of your monitor. There is a Preference setting to make the window position and size sticky...but it doesn't work on the the latest version. The left column of the UI (Locations and Items) is strangely limited in the amount of width the user can give it (which isn't much). Because of this many of my item names are truncated and they shouldn't have to be. If you open the app and set it to full screen (many people like to do this and I'm one of them) the next time you open it...it's again a tiny little box in the upper left quadrant of your monitor. It's a shame the app doesn't allow the user to have more configuration control over things like this...they're actually standard programming conventions for both Mac and Window, so the developer simply is not conforming to them for some reason.

format, layout are "ok". Import of pictures is fine. BIG PROBLEM: you cannot export any of the pictures in the database. No way to send a file to your insurance company.. Basically in, good out NO

Keeping a home inventory is critically important. It makes a big difference when you have to fight with your insurance company, and just helps you know what all your "stuff" is. (Could you make a list of what's in your house if it burned down tomorrow?) Enter Home Inventory. Quicken used to include a home inventory as part of Quicken for Mac (and PC for that matter); they dropped it completely for the Mac, and issued it as a stand-along product for the PC (at $30). Binary Formations' Home Inventory is a great replacement -- faster, more flexible, universal binary, and actively developed. It's this last part that's really important. I had over one hundred items trapped in Quicken's Home Inventory. It's no longer supported. No way to export, and the program crashes under 10.4 and 10.5. You don't want to invest hours of data entry, only to be stuck with an unsupported program. Binary Formations is REALLY responsive. Find a big? Got a question? Fast, helpful answers and fixes. There's a version 2 under development as well. Uses SQL for the underlying database, so you'll never be orphaned (plus there's an export function). I really recommend this program. Sure there's room for improvement, but new stuff is getting added all the time. There's nothing out there that even comes close.

This is a very useful program. It's not only fast, but prints amazing reports. The features missing in both this program and CG's Home Inventory is .mac & iLife integration. (the .mac integration would solve the "What if your computer gets stolen?" problem) It really surprises me that something this simple was missed by both these developers. This one would be an easy purchase for me to justify, but I may go with the CG version, as it also offers movie imports and optional audio recordings for each item, though it's not as stable as this one. I can't find either of these features in this one. Still, it's a beautiful interface and very well put-together. Runs like a charm. Hope it continues to evolve.

This program shows how it should be done!. Data entry is never the most exciting of jobs, but 'Home Inventory' makes the chore as easy as it can get, dare I say, almost a pleasure! This App has it all as far as I'm concerned, it is all I need for the onerous yet essential task for which it is designed. It caters for all the mandatory fields of information, plus more besides, couple that with the most delightful Mac-like interface and you have a sure fire winner! In closing, a word about the Author, in these days of the big boys chasing the big bucks by every means possible, here is someone who cares more about getting it right, also about customer satisfaction. A definite five stars!

Granted, I video taped the entire contents of my house but this program could have saved me some time listing lost items with manufacturer and model numbers.
