CuteClips3.1.23

31 October 2015

Clipboard manager.

Overview

CuteClip 3 is the perfect companion for Mac OS X's native clipboard. It integrates perfect with the look of Mac OS X and completely stays out of the user's way. CuteClips sits in the background and continuously records changes to the clipboard in order to provide access to them when the user needs it.

CuteClips 3 is a complete rewrite, which we used to focus on what's most important: simplicity. The simple but highly efficient user interface allows the user to quickly find the clip that he/she is looking for. This is achieved providing a textual list of all clips for a perfect overview in addition to a huge preview for a detailed view of a clip.

To activate CuteClips 3 the user can either use the the menu item or the HotKey, which defaults to Command-Shift-V, the shortcut for pasting but with a pressed shift key. CuteClips can either be controlled by mouse, but also via keyboard, which makes it useful also for seasoned users who prefer speed and efficient usability.

To prevent clips from being automatically deleted, the user can make clips sticky or assign shortcuts to them. With these shortcuts the clips can be pasted without even searching for them. The user just needs to activate CuteClips and hit the shortcut key and its clip is pasted instantly. Some more advanced features in CuteClips are the ability to paste any clip as plain text, paste multiple clips in a row or paste only parts of a clip.

Feature Highlights:

  • Easy to use interface
  • Big preview for each clip
  • Fully accessible via keyboard or mouse
  • Automatically records any changes to the clipboard in background
  • Keep track of 12 - 50 clips
  • Richtext clips can be pasted as plaintext with ease (press cmd when selecting the clip)
  • Paste several clips in a row by selecting them with space
  • Make clips sticky to prevent them from being deleted automatically
  • Assign shortcuts to clips for faster access
  • Paste only parts of clips, e.g. only the name of a copied file

Okay, it doesn't do quite as much as the competition but it also doesn't hog memory, crash, lose your clips or get left for years without an update. The simple window blends nicely (almost invisibly) with the rest of the UI, so you don't get that 'jarring' feeling you get when some of these so-called 'utilities' take over your whole environment. Having said that, the previews are certainly large enough to see what your about to paste (very important for us oldies with poor eyesight). As well as being very keyboard friendly, the developer has also included some nice usability touches: it comes up with the second item selected rather than the first. This seems a little bit weird at first, but if you wanted the first item on the clipboard, then the chances are you'll just hit command-v without even thinking about it. Best of all, the developer responds quickly and politely to bug reports and feature requests. Recommend that you give it a try before shelling out for something more expensive, less well supported and heavy on the memory use. You may find that the smaller feature set is all you really need.

Please release a new version of this that addresses stability issues in Mavericks. I use this app on a daily basis, but it has been freezing every couple of hours for me since upgrading to Mavericks. Developer was helpful in responding with a link to try v.3.1.12, but still having the same issues...

I've tried numerous clipboard apps and most recently was settled on the clipboard features in Alfred. This, however, takes it to a new level. As mentioned previously, completely keyboard controllable, fast and unobtrusive. Excellent app!

Aaargh. I have now become totally dependent on CuteClips but it has stopped working. When I paste a clipping I get an error sound and get bounced into finder from whatever app I was in.

CuteClips is absolutely fantastic. I used iClips before and always thought it was pretty good (until the developers abandoned it, that is). That's because I didn't know better. CuteClips is much faster, more stable, and offers something that I've only grown to appreciate after using it for a while: it's fully keyboard controllable (but you can still use the mouse). The developer is very good answering emails, and will even share his future plans for the software (great things to come). Last but not least, the price is very reasonable. I personally wish the program had an iOS companion and cross-Mac synching, that's why there's a "feature" star missing. But that's just nitpicking.

Love the program, but I must be missing something. I had a couple of private clips. Pressed cmd-delete to eliminate all clips. It worked. My clips disappeared. So did the instructions because they are clips too. I reinstalled. Instructions still gone. Removed file, downloaded again, reinstalled. Instructions still gone. How do I get the instructions back? How do I remove all _my_ clips without losing the instructions? This is weird. Tom Kirshbaum

A great program, but an option to delete all clips at once would be welcome, unless I haven't found that feature?

It says: "Preferences To access the preferences, please click on the i-Button in the top right corner of this window." But there is no i being displayed there on my Mac like it is in the screenshot - so no way for me to enter my registration number (I got it as part of a bundle)

I've been using CuteClips for some time now, and have come to rely on it. It's rock solid, simple and stays out of the way until I need it (I've tried several similar apps, and just like the way CuteClips fits into my workflow). I had my first "issue" with it today (It turned out the problem was with my file system and had nothing to do with CuteClips itself), and was pleasantly surprised by the quick response from the developer, too -- adding great support to a great product.

Excellent app, it just works and I've never experienced any crashes. Although there seems to be one small issue with clearing the clipboards, I can never clear all my clipboards one always remains till I add another clipboard in which case I can delete the previous clipboard but am left with another clipboard which won't go away till I add something else to another clipboard. Even with that small problem this app is good enough for 5 stars.

I've tried both the cmd+Q and quitting through the preference panel. Neither one actually quit the app as a quick squeeze of the mighty mouse and the app pops up. If this app was actually quit, this would not happen... the squeeze would result in nothing.

I rate this app 1 out of 5 stars. I've found that the app easily stalls while trying to remove clips. Additionally the app has the overwhelming tendency to close itself requiring the user to either place the app on the dock, to use the mighty mouse squeeze shortcut, or to use the keys shortcut. Next I found that the overall UI (user interface) is next to none which leaves the user guessing on how to use it. Finally, quitting this app doesn't really quit it and actually the app keeps running unless you uninstall or turn your Mac off. I give this app a big thumbs down due to the issues mentioned. To the developer, you need to go back to the drawing board on this and rebuild and/or greatly improve this app.

I'm posting this as a comment rather than a 5-star review, because I already posted a 5-star review a couple of years ago. CuteClips continues to be my favourite clipboard manager, and Karsten continues to be a responsive developer. Just for the fun of it, I had a look at some of the other popular clipboard apps, and for my needs, none of them compare. What I like about CuteClips is its simplicity, yet it offers the features that I want: • Direct pasting (rather than just putting the selected clip on the clipboard as some other apps do) • The option of stripping formatting and pasting plain text • The ability to make clips "sticky" and assign numeric shortcuts • No dock icon • A clean and attractive appearance

I liked its simplicity. But it takes 20-30 seconds for a clip to actually paste, much too slow for me.

Great update! Unless you need the complexity or security of PTHPasteboard, CuteClips is a great clipboard manager. Unlike even PTHPasteboard, CuteClips shows a nicely laid out graphical representation and description of file types as well as text. Looking forward to the final release! Keep up the good work.

I've tried other clipboard software and so far I'm liking it a lot because it's simple, Mac-like, and intuitive. There are couple things I've noticed: 1. When uses Spaces under Leopard, when I have the clipboard pop up using a hotkey on one desktop, it will force Spaces to the other virtual desktop the popup was originally. In other words, when I'm trying to paste something in Word for instance in Space 3, I pop up CuteClips which is on Space 1, then I have to drag CuteClips to Space 3 to paste what I want to paste on Word. Making the CuteClips Window appear without having to move through Spaces would be an importance feature to have. 2. There seems to be a bug with the ordering system through the App. I finished buying the beta, but I couldn't save the receipt. The save dialog didn't work and was frozen. All in all, it looks promising, and a far better alternative to the pricier apps out there.

I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and I have been trying all sorts of clipboard utilities in hopes of finding "The One." And I did! CuteClips3 is great! It's simple (most clipboard apps have way too many bells and whistles for my liking), it looks great (the "classic" interface is ever so Mac-groovy), and it's fast. The developer is responsive, and the price is reasonable. Gotta like that!

I really love CuteClips... though I've licenses of iClip 4 and shadowClipboard 3 as well. Unfortunately, CuteClips 2 does crash a lot. A LOT! And there haven't been any updates to address the problem(s). I truly hope this app is not left to wilt.

It is promising indeed! But it crashes a lot (tryout mode) b.e. copying in PSD ... on MaxOS 10.3.9! To the developer: Keep going on and make this THE clipboard app of the Mac!

I can understand limiting what a shareware app is allowed to do in trial mode, but you can't even see and fiddle around with the preferences to see if you would want to pay for this! I think a lot of users like to "trial run" an app before they pay. A new user can only get a vague idea of what CuteClips is all about.

It is not perfect at all. When I copy (and try to paste) elements within Adobes CS2 applications CuteClips crashes. It cannot handle large files without problems and copying/pasting parts or rows of spreadsheets is not possible. The developer knows about the limitations especially concerned to apps like Adobe CS and he is very responsive but that doesn't really help. I have accept the fact that I have paid for a useless tool...

I've tried every clipboard out there, and so far I've always remained with the free PTHPasteboard--that is, until trying CuteClips. And it isn't because it is free that I was using PTH. I liked its simplicity and low footprint, but I disliked the lack of plain text paste and the ugly interface. CuteClips provides a gorgeous interface and plain text pastes, while keeping a tiny footprint--even smaller than PTH in idle CPU usage, and about the same in RAM. In fact, CuteClips has the smallest footprint of any pasteboards out there. Lastly, the developer is very responsive to suggestions. Highly recommended!
