Oolite1.88

20 December 2018

Pirate and bounty hunting sim game (beta).

Overview

Oolite is a space sim game, written for OS X in Objective C using Cocoa and OpenGL. It was written as my response to the withdrawal of Elite - The New Kind from the internet. Although inspired by the work of Christian Pinder, following David Braben and Ian Bell, the work is an independent interpretation and expansion of the original game.

Oolite is designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be modified using simple, free graphics packages and text-editors.

What's new in Oolite

Version 1.88:
New features:
  • Much improved lighting system and graphics enhancements
  • New look for planets and atmospheres
  • Support for up to four joysticks and flight control improvements
  • Scripting and AI improvements, optimizations, quality of life improvements and bug fixes

I played this game on an Acorn electron years ago. it's always been one of my favourites and is still a great game. Thanks for making this version for the Mac and keep up the good work. Haven't had it crash once on me yet, always works fine. :)

Just a quick heads-up to those of you out there who have Macs with Retina displays. It seems the new zoomable map doesn't work properly on a Retina display. From what I can tell, it scales itself to a certain number of pixels, rather than scaling with the rest of the interface. For the time being, I recommend sticking with the previous release until this bug is ironed out. (Hopefully very soon.)

Amazing rendition of the 80s space opera Elite. I've been playing it for about 3 months now and am blown away by not only rediscovering Elite's gameplay but seeing how Oolite manages to improve on it. The game being almost completely scriptable allows the surprisingly large community around Oolite to extend it with superb graphics, engaging missions, believable environments and even fan fiction to engulf the player, all of that free to download and discover!

This game is very buggy. It unexpectedly quits every ten minutes or so. Why anyone would put so much effort into a ripoff game that has that many bugs, I don't know.

I have played Elite on every system imaginable from the early days (BBC B) to date (g5) and this is THE best version. If you fancy a multi player, multi format version see www.vendetta-online.com

This gets more and more awesome. By now it must have improved on every aspect of Elite, and although that must be 20 years ago it had a special magic that's unspoiled in Oolite. v1.35 has taken it to a new level with the shipyard and cargo deals, and this is going to keep me awake for a long time. As a space fan, I think this may be the best game on Mac.

I remember playing a spectrum version of this game. I'm sure it was more engaging...how can that be? Is it reallt necessary for the 20 minute run up to the stations? I can understand having a slow buildup but this is stupid! Straight into the trash with it.

If you ever played Elite, or even just wanted to, this game is an excellent interpretation. Now in version 1.30, it is maturing into an immensely enjoyable game, even incorporating iTunes integration to allow you to play your favourite music as you zoom through space! Great fun

Version 1.2.2 speeds things up drastically, and also makes the combat more challenging. This is no longer a straight port of Elite, and its definitely worth a look.

this game is an update version of firebird elite game that i played more than twenty years ago. the cockpit display is exactly as it was in the first game as are the system (planet)names. at least i could find the spacestation. this version takes too long to get there let alone find it.

Most boring game I played with in 10 years... You buy your goods at a Coriolis station, try to sell them in an other system, but the trips lasts at least 10-20 minutes. Meanwhile nothing happens... Save your brain, don't download it!

Wow!!! I just had a quick glance at this game and it brings back memories of long forgotten Commodore 64 times! I am looking forward to "testing" Oolite thoroughly. Thanks a million Giles! Both Jeweltoy and Oolite have earned a permanent place on my computer's HD! ;-) I am already curious to find out what you will come up with next...

This is a great 'Elite' type game, I love the skins on the spaceships the music is great & the playability is almost there, i feel with a few tweaks this could beat the infamous 'ArcElite' Keep up the good wotk

Perhaps it's just me, but I simply couldn't figure out anything about this game. The objective, anything. The controls didn't appear to do anything to speak of. It took me ten minutes to figure out whether my ship was even moving. I couldn't figure out how to locate objects in systems. The only system I even found anything in was the first one, and the options for doing anything seemed incredibly limited. In short, I couldn't really figure out what the point of this game was. The help file wasn't very explanatory. I managed to jump to some other systems, and the database thingy claimed there were markets there and such, but when I arrived, I couldn't find anything. I just wandered around lost without seeing anything. It seemed to be impossible to descend near the planets, although if you did get close to them, the in-system hyperspace thing would quit working... but then I wasn't really able to tell whether it was doing anything anyway, beyond making lines on the screen. I feel that either this game is completely inscrutable, or I'm very much missing something. I don't mean to give a bad review, I'm just completely confused.

Nice job! All the old familiar places... Two tiny problems: 1280x854 fullscreen clips the control panel - everything's still visible, so it's not worth fixing on its own. Second, there's a bit of keybounce. One major problem: I hate the music! :-P Can we have a switch for it please? Other than that, Oolite will wreck my studies! Thank you!
