Amazes me how I could not find this on the Apple site, or Epson when I clicked on the relevant download page. It took me a day to test restart reinstall etc. until I accidently stumbled onto here, and this driver miraculously worked.
What I don't understand since the drivers are updated, why it isn't updated automatically on the Software Update on the Mac?
My experience, at least with pro level Epson’s (3880 on up), the WORST thing you can do is let Apple update the drivers. Kiss of death. You’ll end up having to reset the printing system and reinstall the drivers from Epson. Especially painful for those of us with multiple Epson’s (I have a 3880, 4800 and 4900). You actually have to install the drivers in order. Never let Apple futz with the printer drivers, do this yourself and you’ll be in much better shape.
This sucks I could print fine from my Epson printer 14 until I went ahead with this apple update .. now I'm running "Epson utility lite?"
what the eff is this??? I can't even instruct this crap application to allow me to change my ink cartridges! Jobs is barely in the ground and already idiots are botching up the the place.
Ok problem solved. Apple's crappy update deleted my printer utility, replacing it with a utility that didn't allow me to activate the printer cartridge change. I won't be installing any useless updates from Apple when it comes to my printer in the future. Thanks for wasting my time at work.
I first ran SU without anything connected to my MBP and nothing showed up. I then connected the Epson AIO and re-ran SU, resulting in a 31.5MB d/l. While these updates are definitely device-specific, they may also depend on that device being connected (either by cable or via network) to your machine.
Jcraig... thanks for the tip.
In the 15 years I've been using Macs you would have thought I would have realized this but I must admit I hadn't. And those huge downloads were a PITA.
The latest update (with my printer turned on ;) was only 20MB. Great.
I DL'd the Software Updater version as it was only 20MB vs the monster stand-alone version available here at MU.
As best I can tell there is no difference in performance.
For me, this updater installed as designed, but what, if any, improvements are result, that too I dunno. OTOH, no problems have been discovered.
It sure would be nice if Apple mandated that they post no required updaters via their Software Update unless the developer (including Apple) listed what changes have been made.
If you use Software Update you only get the appropriate updates for any pre-configured Epson printers/scanners on your OS X install, hence the smaller download size. The 800+MB package is for the whole lot of Mac SL-compatible Epson printer drivers.
I can't help but notice these drivers aren't being released bu Epson, but by Apple. I've been using an Epson Stylus PHOTO R380 with little difficulty (except problems with the 7.5.2 firmware update to my Airport Extreme - network printing is hit-or-miss now). Why exactly do I need to download an 837MB file to replace the (working) manufacturer's driver (which hasn't been updated by Epson since 2007) with something from Apple? There is no reference on the Apple site to explain why this update is necessary. Anybody have any insights?
When downloading this updater, the size is 737MB! Apparently, the DL is for every Epson ever made.
But when I used System Preferences/Software Update, the update for my Stylus Photo R340 was only 19.9MB.
Perhaps when the stand alone package is unpacked, only the needed code is installed. I dunno.
I doubt Epson will comment, but maybe someone who really knows whereof he/she speaks will chime in re this size disparity.
A for me, this updater is uneventful. No better, no worse. At least so far. But then, I was not having problems to begin with and I have an old printer.
I have MAC OS Version 10.6.7 and have been using an Epson NX420 wireless printer without much difficulty. Now the printer status is offline and I can't get anything to print from my desktop either from the internet or my documents. How do i fix this?
I have Rosetta installed, but I'm not sure how to determine if it's being used in this case? I don't think so though, because previous to Snow Leopard, I never had this Epson Printer Utility Lite... I had Epson Printer Utility2 and Epson Printer Utility3. Those two utilities remained on my drive after I updated to OS 10.6, but they wouldn't work at all. The new "Lite" utility worked fine, but not until this driver update 2.1 would it show the ink levels for the printer on the AirPort network. So yes, the "Lite" utility is working over AirPort. But in addition to head cleaning and adjustment, it now displays the ink levels, finally (I wasn't able to check the ink levels on the AirPort printer under Leopard either... it would just say, "Information is unavailable.").

Software update is always enormously smaller in size than if you were to download the full package (20+MB versus 984MB).
Sorry to hear this didn't work for the last poster, but it appears to be fine for me.

Having said that, the Epson Site has a message on the download page saying that updates may be available at Apple and supplies a link.
My printer and utility work fine and I'll avoid getting dragged into a "LOS," (Loop of
Shit) situation until any problem becomes evident.

The download for me was only 1.1 MB by doing this versus 962 MB had I simply downloaded directly from Macupdate!
Incredible!

I have a snowleopard w/o Rosetta and I get an
"rastertoescp deny file-write* /private/var/spool/cups/Library" error.
(And does the printer utility work via Airport?)
