I already on a license for version 1. How do I upgrade? It seems like the app has been made AppStore only, so the developer wants to charge me $15 again?

Apologies, the update is offered via the in-app updater. MacUpdate Desktop didn't show it as such though.

When updating from within Screeny it says it is for 10.7 Lion only, not 10.6 as it says here. Too bad for those of us who won't go the Lion?/Mountain Lion route of integration with iOS.

Nowhere does it clearly state that OS 10.7 Lion is now required.

The updater simply updated to 2.0.1 without first checking the currently-installed OS version and providing a dialog to give you a choice to continue the update.

Since I am running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), I discovered after the fact that Screeny 2.0.1 requires 10.7.

MacUpdate, please update this page to clearly reflect the OS requirement.
Developer, please address this oversight of functionality.

Thanks for the heads up on this Porpentine, I was just about to upgrade but I'm still on Snow Leopard. I love Screeny, it does exactly what I need recording screen movies to demo my iphone and mac apps.

DrewWilson is the developer and gives himself a 5 star rating? That's bad practice... Would've been great if he would take the time to reply to some user comments on this page too, but that didn't happen.

I got Screeny when it was free for a limited time via MacAppStore.

I'd give everybody the advice, NOT to buy this app.

Sure, it works, but then again, QuickTimePlayer (which is included with Mac OS X) does the same job for free, and in many regards better than Screeny (for example you can choose the save location). Just open QuickTimePlayer (version 10.something) and click File>New Screen Recording. Or ctrl+cmd+N. Then follow the instructions, you can drag to record an area or make a full screen recording. Works like a charm.

So: another useless app in the MacAppStore that tries to generate some income from uninformed users.

Just add this: usually, there is a reason why a developer doesn't offer a demo version…

That's a silly comment. Just because such an app already exists doesn't mean an alternative with similar features is redundant - no need to reinvent the wheel!

The developer needs to make a living too - would you stop working if someone was hired to do a similar job than you do? I don't think so.

Screeny has been of great use for me, there are some minor bugs, but I'm sure this will be rectified in a future update.

Thanks lemon-kun. QT does indeed work great :) I make no judgements against Screeny (it's UI is very nice and it's quite polished).

It's not the same as recording with Quicktime 10. Screeny allows you to pre-crop the area of the screen you want to limit your video recording to, like a WINDOW. I find it very useful.

@Capobello: Well actually QuickTime 10 let's you pre-crop your video recording too. Just push the record button and then follow the instructions on the screen ("drag to record part of the screen"). What Screeny does better in this regard than QuickTime: it shows you how big that area will be (px*px). For this feature alone I gave the app 1 star. However, if you really need that, you'd also most probably need a whole lot of other features anyway, so you'd go with a more advanced screen-recording app. For quick and easy screen recordings, QuickTimeX is best, and comes with every Mac – it's always nice to see how much a Mac can do out of the box…

@David-Schiefer: David, probably you're right, my comment was a bit harsh. Of course there is reason for different UI approaches and from time to time I like to pay for a more polished user experience.

For your question, if I would stop working if someone else did a similar job than me – well, if that someone does it for free (and did so a long time before I came anyway, quietly sitting on the desk of every user), probably I would HAVE TO stop working – unless I find customers that don't know about the simpler/cheaper alternatives. In any case, I would fear transparency. Not providing a demo is a way not allowing for transparency.

That said, Screeny has made some progress since I wrote my review. Some bugs were fixed, some features introduced. It seems you still can't choose your saving location (has this something to do with the upcoming new sandboxing requirements from Apple?) instead, they put a little icon which takes you to the location in the Finder (a bit clumsily, by opening two or three windows).

After all, I think Screeny may have some qualities for some (shows how big recording area is, frame rate, nice big red recording button, pink instead of black (QuickTime10) mouse clicks, menubar icon), however, everybody must decide on his/her own if Screeny is worth the 15$. Unfortunately the developer decided not to allow a demo, so the only way to evaluate the app's use, is to buy it.

Personally, I can't recommend Screeny; for quick and easy screen recordings there is QuickTimeX which comes included with your Mac, like there is Preview for PDFs and basic photo colour adjustments.

I useQtakeHD software. I need a demo version to verify whether or not SCREENY will work. I own SnapzPro and it doesn't work with QTAKE.

Please allow demo versions of SCREENY! Thanks

Interesting! The "Information" panel in this webpage indicates a

"Date: 07 Sep 2011", which is later than AppsStore's page on this

"Updated: 13 August 2011, Current Version: 1.2.1, Price: $14.99".

The later date indicates "free" while the earlier date charges $14.99.

Looks great, but why does the developer have so little confidence in his product? No free trial, no way to test the app before paying for it. Is the developer afraid nobody will buy it once they try it?
