Wokabulary is the new, fun and effective way to learn and rehearse words.

Just like the flash-card systems you had in school, Wokabulary organises your words in different memory levels. This makes it easy to see which words you already know well and what you need to rehearse again.

Wokabulary is free to use in a base version, that allows you to manage one language. You can use the full learning- and quiz mode and also import wordlists from the internet. The full version enables multiple languages and adds cool features like syncing, statistics as well as import/export function.

I tried the free "base version" to check whether the program might assist me to learn a new language. While I like the general appearance and features, I could not work with the free version at all. There is NO way to remove downloaded word sets - many of which are faulty, e.g. because they have the languages mixed up (e.g. words in the "english" column while it should be in the column of the foreign language) and you only understand this after it is downloaded. You can only delete individual words, not sets or a number of words you don't want or which are wrong.
If you think you can remove the whole language to get rid of the wrong word sets and reload good ones, you're out of luck, too. The option to delete the language is there, but you cannot click it - maybe this is a "special feature" of the paid version, but how can I know??? In addition, I am afraid that also in the paid version the words will not "remember" that they belong to a certain downloaded word set (it would be easy to implement this as a tag). I will not spend money for a program that I cannot test in real-world use.

The 3rd party word lists that can be downloaded are provided for free by individuals via Quizlet.com. Quizlet is an open platform to exchange vocabularies. Naturally the quality of the provided word lists varies. That is why we provide a complete preview on the word lists in Wokabulary before you download it.

After downloading any word list you can of course delete the words again as you wish.
You can delete multiple words by holding the shift or command key while selecting words.

To empty a vocabulary you can just select all words with cmd+a and delete them without deleting the complete vocabulary.

Deleting a complete language / vocabulary is only possible if you have more than one vocabulary, which is in deed a paid feature.

Hi Mr. Fridge,
thanks for your reply. Of course one can delete multiple words, as you say. But that was not what I criticise. What one cannot do is to delete a downloaded WORD LIST as a whole. As soon as the words of a list are downloaded, they apparently forget from which list they came, so they blend into the thousands of words that may be correct. Do you suggest to go through all of them to manually select those from the new, faulty word list? Honestly? Why do words not remember the originating word list name as a tag (or at least some kind of identifier, or at the very least a "last imported" tag)? As the program works with tags already, I don't understand why this is not implemented. One other thing that bugs me is that there is no way to revert the language order (as many word lists have the wrong order and show the foreign word in the english column, and vice versa) after they are imported. This possibility exists only during import. Once you forgot to do it there, there is no way to correct it later - and as you cannot find&delete the last imported word list (problem 1 again), it messes up your entire vocabulary list.

New words appear in the "?" (unstudied) tab. As a result, the most recently downloaded list can be easily deleted by selecting all unstudied words (cmd-a) and deleting them.
It is, of course, much easier to edit lists if you pay for the multiple language add-on. I am only studying one language; however, I use the multiple language add-on to create multiple single language lists. Any new list can then be downloaded into its own distinct bank of cards.

Hi Garys,
The unstudied tab contains ALL unstudied words, and that's great for organising the study. But you don't want to delete all unstudied words just because you imported a faulty word list. If, of course, you only download a new word list after you have studied all remaining unstudied words, that would be an option. It is just not very likely that people do this. Especially when you start using the program to learn a language, you need to populate the vocabulary - and to do so, you import several word lists one after the other. Those words are all in the "unstudied" category, and - as I said before twice - do not remember from which word list the come. So, if the fifth word list you import is faulty (or you import it by mistake), there is no way to delete the WORD LIST as a whole. As I understand it, not even the paid version can do this (I would be happy to pay for the full version!). That one trivial omission makes the program, which is otherwise great, very user-unfriendly, and clearly holds me back from buying it.

The auto language change feature for input versus target language is slick. I would like to see a more robust and demanding spaced-retention system, as the five levels included do not give enough exposure to a single card. But, over all, I am much happier with Wokabulary than with other flash card programs for the Mac.

This app was formally called Papapapaya and got a new name with version 2. I miss information for us who have bought the first version of this excelllent vocabulary app.

- What is new?
- Can I use the vocabulary from version 1 in the version 2 as well?
- Is there a discount?

By the way, the app crashes at launch

Wokabulary brings a complete new design which we hope is not only more elegant but also easier to use.

New features include:
- new Learn-Mode
- built-in direct access to Quizlet.com vocabulary database
- new and faster synching

You can easily import all your Papapapaya vocabularies to Wokabulary (import requires full version).

Existing customers who bought Papapapaya in our web shop can use their Papapapaya license key with Wokabulary. (So the update is free for owners of a Papapapaya license )

Regarding the crash you experience: Wokabulary requires OS X 10.7.3 or higher and a 64bit Mac. (the macupdate requirements are currently wrong). If your Mac meets these requirements and still crashes, please send us the crash report by e-mail so we can reproduce it.

Any chance that a future update could include the option to add extra characteristics for word entries (i.e. pronunciation, synonyms)? Also, would it be possible to create quizzes that test only some and alternately all of the different attributes? Thanks!

Hi,
you can add pronunciation as a comment that will be displayed in the quiz as well. Version 1.2 (that will be released next week) will also include an option to control weather comments are displayed together with the question or with the solution.

You can also add (multiple) tags to your words to assign topics or word form information. When you start a quiz you can then limit the quiz to certain tags. For example you could have Papapapaya just ask you for words with the tag "verb" or "cooking"

We are working on intelligent support for synonyms, too, including an option to show all synonyms. It will follow soon but I can't promise any date, yet.

Best regards

Just wanted to say that synonym support has been introduced in version 1.3.
Tagging has been dramatically improved in 1.6.

I'm using this for about a week now to rehearse my french vocabulary and IMHO it is the best vocabulary trainer on the Mac. I was using Que before because it is free but it has limited features.
Papapapaya has everything I wanted:
- the Quiz really works well and I feel I can really learn better when following the recommended rehearsing intervals
- the Statistics are well done
- I like the automatic sorting in difficulty levels. that's more useful than sorting in folders since you can easily see which words you know well and which not
- its very easy to use (I found especially Provoc very confusing)
- I could import my existing words from Que

Only I would like to have more control over the words marked as "Don't ask again". Maybe a separate column for that? But as this is still version 1.0.1 I'm optimistic about future updates...

We're happy to hear that you like Papapapaya.
With the new version 1.1 you can now hide or show the "Don't Ask Again"-words. We hope this suits your needs.
