I cannot recommend this. It takes much longer to load and much longer to unpack files than even the built-in Archive Helper. I had this for a while and it's got a nice icon, but that's about all there is to it.

Hi Schoschie,

Sad to read that. For the record, can you add some more information like the OS you are using Keka with, and all the information about the load times. I really can't see what's the point, it's fast for me, but maybe with more information I can help you and you can help the project :)

Thanks anyway for your review!

Sure. I'm under 10.6.8.
Sorry my review sounds so negative. It's always harsh to add negative reviews for free apps since it implies I'm not appreciating the work put into it. Of course I do. But still, I am being honest here.
I cannot give you precise load times; I've recently deleted the app, but I remember quite well that it took a couple of seconds of bouncing in the Dock until it was launched, and then everything was fine. But I found other solutions to start up instantly, so bottom line it was not the fastest solution for me. Of course YMMV. I still dig the app icon :)

This new version continues telling you that there's a new version available even after you've installed it. It's happened every time I've used Keka on two different Macs since updating to 1.4.3. And yes, I did trash the old version and emptied the trash.

Weird thing, my Keka still runs smoth as ever; try deleting all support files:
~/Library/Application Support/keka
~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Tickets/Keka
~/Library/Caches/com.aone.keka
~/Library/Preferences/com.aone.keka.plist

You've solved this problem? If you still with this, just go to the project page and create a new ticket. Also, you can download it again from kekaosx.com.

Prefer unarchiver that handles more file types.

The Unarchiver is the extraction king, no doubt. Keka improves the compression on your Mac. Compatible apps, worth have both :)

I thought this was the best free archive manager, until I tried to archive a >2 gb MKV file. The software just froze and I had to force quit it. Smaller files seem to work though.

This must be fixes in the new upcoming version. Try the 0.1.5 beta.

It is the best. I really like the icon of the application, it is sensational, tired of fluffy stuff. Only fault is to not compress to .rar.
Finally I just wanted to thank the developer for the work done.

Simply perfect, if if had more features it'd probably be a paid app. I just wish for a progress bar that actually shows how much of the compression has been done so far.

I've been testing Keka in our workflow, and it's a great app.
But it's missing one feature that we desperately need.

I'm looking for the ability to batch .Zip multiple directories
into distinct archives. Right now Keka (and basically every other Zipping program out there) will combine multiple folders into one archive if you try to .Zip them at the same time.

Ideally, I need to drop 30 different directories into Keka and produce 30 different .zip archives.
Folder01 ---> Folder01.zip
Folder02 ---> Folder02.zip
etc...

This seems like it shouldn't be a hard thing to do, but I haven't found any Zipping utility on the Mac that offers this.

Does anyone know how to contact the developers of Keka?
the developer page doesn't seem to have any direct contact info.

this issue also used to bother me a lot and i couldn't believe there was not a single archiver able to do it until i found cleanarchiver, of course.

gatovadio - thanks for info on CleanArchiver.

their new beta looks good, i just wish there was some
way to specify a destination for your archive.
It doesn't seem like that is any option?

gatovadio replied on 28 Mar 2011
@steve_in_dc
unfortunately the options are all in the main window. you can post a feature request in the blog page or if you check closely, zip, 7zip and rar formats let you provide additional command line options. maybe there's a command flag for these formats to output to a specific destination so you'll have to check in their official websites.

Martinb had trouble on 29 Nov 2011
Keka has been working for me very good for a long time as the standard application for expanding zip archives etc.

Recently I had a problem: When trying to unzip the text editor EDDIE 2.1 (http://el34software.com/latest/Eddie%20OSX%202.1.zip) with keka 0.1.4.2 , I got a prompt requiring a password (although there is no password set) and could not unzip the zip file.
(with the built-in archiving tool in OS 10.6 it works perfectly.)

Kind regards

Martin

Even I change the location to extract the files, the program only strategic for the same file folder. I've changed so much to custom folder (which I do not know what would be) and to ask before extracting.

New version 0.1.5b1 Works fine. In the old version I did not obtain to make to function. I find that only program lacks to a function it to stay killer, It would like to be able to compress the archives and to divide they in parts, because when I want to copy an image of dvd for mine pendrive it has that to be lesser that 4gb because of fat32, then necessary to divide it in 2 parts. I will buy in Mac App Store when version 1.5 is lauched. Thanks for your work.

GeoProf had trouble on 17 Nov 2010
Keka 1.4.1 has a major bug that keeps it from closing - not just when it's finished compressing or extracting, but all the time. The only way to shut it down is to force quit. This is one of my favorite must=have apps, but this version is a bit sickly. I'll alert its developers.

Just you and another user (via sourceforge) noticed that. It's an important bug unresolved yet, all growl click feedback goes nowhere when Keka it's not opened. I wanted to reply your mail, but there was no reply address (I have to improve the comment form!).
By the way, you're running Keka in a Leopard OS?

Thanks for your feedback!

Running 10.6.5 on a fairly modern 2.4 GH Unibody Aluminum MacBook and a 1st gen Core2Duo 2.16 GH iMac. The problem manifested the same on both. Thanks again for your quick response, not to mention keeping Keka free!
