Where is the entry for MangaStudio 5?

At rev 5, this gets to be a serious application that can be recommended. I’m not going to rate 5 in the 4x entry.

I came into 4 with high hopes, but cynicism.
I couldn’t recommend version 4, though I bought it. Unless you score it at a hefty discount, it just isn’t cutting edge in 2013: At the right discount price point, its still worth a buy.

However, version 5 is a PLAYER. What you get at the entry level is very good. 5 EX I have not tried, but the increased feature set there sounds like its a true professional tool.

You can do much of this in Photoshop, but MangaStudio is now becoming a benchmark application at a better price.

In 5, they changed muddled menu names - into a better translated function names, revamped the structure a little & in 5.03 the vector conversions make this quite nice.

I have to correct my comment about not being qualified for updates. At current writing, MS 5 is at 5.03 & the upgrades from 5.0 have been free.

Manga Studio is by far the best application for digital inking, far superior to Photoshop or Corel Painter. It is most suitable for drawing with a Wacom and the closest thing to draw on a sheet of paper. It's almost perfect.

Worth its price.

The price listed is uninteresting to me.
I bought it on discount (which had a few hidden costs) & still haven't warmed up to it.
Therefore my opinion is premature.

The concept behind this is good.
The idea of process screens & perspective grids is a good one, but in a large way, this feels to me, to be a slightly customized Photoshop-type of application. I can do most of this in other draw applications.

What it gives me is a directed way to work, with a sketch mode that auotmatically works in blueline on a background layer, over which I trace.

For my part, I've always liked Painter despite a different interface, but failed to keep up with upgrades.

Nothing is quite as gratifying as working on real paper for the sketching part & no one has really made in-roads enough to persuade me that there is a digital app for actual drawing that has truly arrived, yet.

Digital inking may be its value & strength, but I can't decide yet.

Have to comment one more time: For you - perhaps it is worth the price.

Its a nice app when you get to version 5. Which seems not to be offered here!
(Well, what used yo be “Studio” is actually pretty close to the 4 EX version feature set with some interface enhancements).

Much cleaner that 4, it moves closer to the other standards comic & illustration apps in the palettes. I still wish it matched the usual suspects in how you get to adjustments, etc which are second nature these days. It is better than Photoshop for this type of work, in a lot of ways better than Illustrator, however, unless you spend a very lot of time in MS, the interface still sort of gets in your way by being nonstandard.

If you buy it on discount - don’t expect to qualify for even the most minor updates.
