GEDitCOM II is a new genealogy application for MacOS X that sets the standard for Macintosh ease-of-use editing of genealogy files, for customization of the user experience, and for power features allowing the greatest access to your genealogical data. What's New
Version 1.7 (build 2):This version introduced place records and tools for entering a map for each place. Wouldn't it be nice to map events and places now possibly entered into your data? Many mapping options can be crated by using the scripting feature of GEDitCOM II. Two such scripts are included in this build: Place Advisor coverage now extends to the entire globe down to city, town and village level. For a detailed list of changes, see the full changelog.
Mapping Features:
- Places in This File - this new script will draw a map with pins on all the places in place records that have a known bounding box. You can map the entire world or selected continents.
- Events Places for Window Records - this new script will draw a map with pins for all events that occurred at address or place with known latitude and longitude. The map can be for one individual, one family and its individuals, or all individual and family records listed in the current front window.

When I started working on our family tree I tried most of the genealogy programs available for the Mac but it didn’t take a lot of thought to settle on GEDitCOM. I checked back on the others from time to time and never saw anything to make me change. When GEDitCOM II came out my comment on another review site was “the best just got a whole lot better”. Since then each revision has added a further swathe of improvements.
You can use it “out of the box” and it will do pretty much anything you want; you can tweak it a little using the inbuilt customization options or by fairly simple editing of the formats to suit your particular needs or your preferences about how it looks; or if you’re more adventurous you can make major changes. But underneath it all is a rock-solid base built on the Gedcom standard. Other programs use Gedcom but often adapt it in ways that hinder the transfer of information to other users: GEDitCOM even provides ways to correct these idiosyncracies.
The developer, John Nairn, is very responsive to requests for help or to suggestions for future changes. (Contrast the adverse comments about the developers of one of the other major programs who, according to one reviewer, had “even gone to the length of contacting me regarding negative feedback on third party sites and telling me that the program simply MUST work. It has to be me that is causing the problems.”)

GEDCOM is a standard used to shared genealogy files digitally --- every genealogy program that I know of is capable of importing and exporting information in that format in order to **share** information in a way that does not require a specific OS or proprietary program.
GEDitCOM uses GEDCOM files as it's "native language". "Customizable" means you can change the way it looks, feels, and presents information.
