It would be great if you added adjustability to "skip 10 secs" function, for example I want to skip 3 secs backward in animes just to understand the beginning of a sentence. Also why can't I redefine hotkeys? Everything else works perfectly for me :)

you can do it enter

defaults write hu.mplayerhq.mplayerosx.extended MPEAudioDelayStepSize 3

in Terminal.app (in Applications/Utilities)
to change the left and right keys to skip 3 seconds

I just compared CPU usage, VLC uses 15% while MPlayer uses 8% !! I'm not gonna use VLC since version 2 release, I'm switching over to MPlayer!!! Good job MPlayer developers! Now please don't ruin this app in the future with clutter! Keep it simple and Mac-ish!

First thing I wanna say is that there has been a "fork" of this MPlayer OSX Extended. So my testing and review it's based on that fork and not on the original one.

You can get the latest version of MPlayer.app (the "fork") here: https://sites.google.com/site/hermihg/

I wouldn't say it's the best one, since MPlayerX it's really good as well, but I do find MPlayer more atractive because of:

1. Player design. It's really eye-candy, I like it more than MPlayer X and most of the functions I use (chapters ordering, audi or subs switching) can easily be reached through a prompt window inside the video (which I wasn't able to do that on MPlayer)

Besides, fullscreen controls has been completely redesigned making it more gorgeous than the official rev14

2. Hi10P. I watch a lot of anime, and Hi10p has been the new profile almost every "serious" fansub has been rolling out. It also supports Ordered Chapters.

3. CPU Usage. I'm not sure if it's because of the MPlayer 2 binaries, but MPlayer.app performed better than MPlayerX on a 720p and 1080p Hi10p MKV. 720p used around 40-50% while MPlayerX used round 90-100% (this is on my MacBook Air 2010).

What MPlayer needs it's to migrate all these fixes done by Hermi to the original fork at github, and after that, move it to the Mac App Store.

Dose not play some of the newer mkv's (Hi10p). Makes a mess of them.

MPlayerX 1.0.8 seems to play them fine.

Well, rev13 nor rev14 seemed to work with any kind of simple file on my Dual 2.0 G5 with 4GB RAM. VLC in contrast just works, but I got Mplayer extended as it had been said it could do a better work with mkv files and to be fair VLC struggled with some of those files on my machine even with nothing else running atthe same time.

Then I tried a mpg fil, asked MP to drop frames and after many many minutes, like 10 or so, it ran quite nicely. But 10 minutes?

An mp4 file ran for a blink with sound, then nothing.

On VLC 1.1.5, about everything runs fine.

I also noticed the font-cache have to rebuilt on every start which is odd. Why no just on first run?

I will try mkv-files but I'm not holding my breath. Why would it work better with just those?

Anyone can recommend a specific version for mkv-files? I mean some earlier version must have been quite good, no?

I will adjust my rating when a usable version shows up.

I haven't watched a whole mkv-movie yet, but when I tried a 720p mkv MPlayer OSX Extended rev12 (!) did a decent job playing different parts without sync problems or a severe amount of dropped frames.
This being a stark contrast to my experience with mpeg and divX AVI where I had recurring audio sync problems and an close eternal start up time before playback commenced.

Any clues why this could be?

Well, MPlayer OS X has been my best media player since my first mac. It is the only player that I found could render correctly non-untf8 ASS/SSA created in Windows.

But I am holding on rev12, since rev13/rev14 are buggy. On on hand, the new subtitle language system is not better than the one in rev12 where u can specify how to match the subtitle files by name, cus most subtitles made in my country actually do not always have proper encoding. On the other hand, it could not play many RMVB and MKV video which it used to.

Now, instead of fully upgrading to rev14, I only manually replaced internal mplayer within rev12 app with that from rev14. And it works better especially for 1080p video.

That was a nice idea, Jichi. I'll try it when I have the time to tinker.

It's also good to note that different requirements from users around the world can give a different experience for users with different priorities of available features.

New version (r14) is unusable on Intel Core Duo. Video plays for a second and then freezes, while the audio continues to play, even on SD content. r13 plays them just fine.

This occurs using both the MT and standard mplayer binaries. Log file does not indicate anything erroneous. A shame...

I fixed the same problem by deleting the app's 2 prefs in my preferences folder:

- Quit the app MPlayer
- Go to ~/Library/preferences
- delete the file "hu.mplayerhq.mplayerosx.extended.LSSharedFileList.plist"
- delete the file "hu.mplayerhq.mplayerosx.extended.plist"
- re-launch the app

Is there a way to make Mplayer look for a .srt subtitle in the same folder as the movie and load it automatically, like Movist does?

OK, it seems it works by default. Some .srt subtitles I have were not loaded because they were not recognized by MPlayer, probably due to some problems in the files themselves, even though VLC can display them. It proves that there is no perfect player and one should always have 3 different players and from movie to movie switch to the one that works best.

I just updated to rev13 from rev12 recently, and found most of my RMVB video and some of AVI video would crash rev13, which can be played in rev12 and VLC well. Any one get the same problem?
- Most RMVB: Movie plays for arround 15sec and then stucked. I have to killall MPlayer OSX Extended to force quit.
- Some AVI:: MPlayer OSX Extended reports crash and asked me to select which mplayer to use, when I tries to play the movie.

Besides, VIDEO_TS still doesn't display well.
