works with multiple monitors: attach new monitors and the icons will instantly be hidden.
drag & drop: drag files on the desktop and they will be copied onto your real desktop.

What's New
Version 2.1.1:
Fix for the "Damaged Application" message that appeared when Camouflage was updated to 2.1
in order to use a hotkey in Camouflage to show and hide the icons, you need to go to the Camouflage preferences by clicking in the Camouflage menu item, then select preferences.
In the preferences window there's a button that you can press to change the hotkey, then you enter the key-combination that you like. They key-combination that you entered will be shown in the text field next to the button. When the text has a blue background, you're changing the hotkey and when it doesn't have a blue background anymore, the hotkey is set and you can instantly use it to show and hide your icons.
Here's also a youtube video that was done for Camouflage 1 some years ago. It will explain how to go to the preferences: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELd4kBV_2ds&feature=player_embedded
I wish to express my gratitude for your detailed explanation. However, "Change" button doesn't work as you say (Camouflage 2.1.1).
My OS is Mac OSX 10.6.8
So what happens, when you press the "change" button? also, could you please open /Applications/Utilities/Console.app and see if there's anything logged about Camouflage, especially when you press the change button?
also, maybe we should continue this troubleshooting via email, as it just fills up this review section with stuff probably totally uninteresting to other users.
Information on Camouflage was not recorded in Console log at all though it operated as you said. I do not want to waste time for Camouflage any further. I define the shortcut key by using QuicKeys instead of using the function of Camouflage. All of the other functions of Camouflage are very fine. Thanks,
Version 2.1 has improved from the previous release (FinderPop now works fine when selecting the "Ignore mouse events..." option) but I still can't use another Wallpaper picture than the original grey one. You can choose another picture in preferences, but the Hide Icons command still shows the grey screen.
Removing v2.1 and everything added by it, then going back to v 1.25 solved that problem. Mac OS X 10.7.1 here.
in version 2.1 the way the current wallpaper is selected was improved a lot and should always show the correct wallpaper image. Could you tell me what settings you have for your wallpaper and what settings you have in Camouflage? What exactly is the "original gray wallpaper" you are referring to?
Thanks for your reply. I should have been more clear, sorry. When you hide the icons with Camouflage, all you see is the desktop color you chose in System Preferences: here it is a neutral grey. With v1.25, I can go into Camouflage preferences/Custom Wallpaper and chose another color. When I hide icons with Camouflage, the icons are hidden with the color selected in Camouflage preferences/Custom Wallpaper, and the entire desktop is using that color instead of the grey. That does not work in v2.1: hiding the icons still uses the original choice from Sys. Prefs. for the desktop image (grey) instead of the one selected in Camouflage prefs/Custom Wallpaper.
The current update of Camouflage isn't working. After downloading the update from the Mac App Store and trying to launch it, it fails with the following error:
“Camouflage.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete “Camouflage.app” and download it again from the App Store.
I've tried deleting and re-downloading the update, but I still get the same error.
Just as a follow up, I deleted the Camouflage folder in ~/Library/Application Support and also the preferences file "com.briksoftware.Camouflage.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences and after doing this Camouflage now launches successfully.
I wonder if I'll need to buy the updated version in order for this to work in Lion. If so, I will happily buy it. I've used Camouflage for years and have found it to be my favorite. Certainly worth the small price being asked. My favorite feature is being able to double-click the desktop and open a Finder window. Very handy.
I've noticed that as well. Maybe the App Store doesn't allow free stuff, at least not on a permanent basis; I really don't know their terms. Then again, it's a tough economy. I never begrudge developers who had a program that was free for some time and then opt to charge for it. It is their prerogative, and circumstances change in a person's life.
One word to Lion Comatibility first: 1.25 works, but Mission Control is useless when it runs. With version 2.0.1 Mission Control works.
One word to the pricing: When i wrote Camouflage, i was a student and had plenty of time. Version 1 was in fact written in one weekend. Over time i've spend literally loads of time to improve Camouflage, adding features, fixing bugs.
I'm now working full-time as a software developer, have a family and don't have nearly as much time as back then. The App Store of cause allows for freeware applications, but on the other hand also makes it extremely easy to provide applications at a very low price and still get some money back. I guess these two reasons are why Camouflage is not free anymore. But $2 is also not expansive at all.
Great little helper to hide icons on a cluttered desktop. A feature that set's it apart similar tools is a shortcut (mouse click on the desktop) to show your desktop content inside a new Finder window.
To round it off I would suggest the following additions:
- make the menu bar item optional (the show/hide state info appears not that important to me, altough some might be other opinion)
- make a "alt-click" on the desktop hiding the frontmost app's windows like in normal finder operation
BTW: DesktopSweeper (APE module) has those 2 features, but doesn't work in Snow Leopard anymore.
This is still the best in its league as far as I'm concerned:
1. Works well with Snow Leopard
2. Provides a fast way to open a new Finder window (just double-click the desktop or set it for single click)
3. Nice developer support
4. FREE! (although donating is a nice thing to do)
the problem with the blue flashes will be fixed in version 2.1, which is currently in review and will hopefully be released soon.
alt-click for hiding single apps does not work as i can only hide all other applications or hide the active application (which is Camouflage). So only cmd-alt-click will work for hiding applications, sorry for that.
Problem with the second monitor using EarthDesk. Earthdesk disappears and is replaced by another desktop (not even the one selected in the systems preference for that monitor).
While a lovely application, it appears to have some rather significant RAM leaks.
Every time that I hide the icons on my desktop, the ram usage increases - it doesn't take long to get its ram usage up to 240 MB - if I had more ram, (or less other programs open) I could get it harder.
If not for the rather insane ram usage, this program would be on my list of must-haves.
Needless to say, this is an issue that should probably get taken care of.

ability to show and hide the icons (available in status item menu)
works with desktop managers
ability to 'click through' Camouflage to get the normal Desktop-Context menu (Use with caution, you may select a file and don't notice it. You may only want to use that feature if you are using FinderPop)
