I'm a Betterzip (BZ) user, but have tried out the Entropy demo for a few days. Entropy is simple and elegant, but BZ has too many excellent features I'd miss if I moved to Entropy
❧ Preview pane in BZ is really great, useful in situations UI-wise where quicklook in an archive isn't (which both do support).
❧ Favourites pane in BZ is very useful.
❧ BZ presets are wonderfully powerful! They enable specific sets of extract/save archive management operations and can be easily accessed. Things like automagically extracting a zipped app to /Applications and running it.
❧ Single-click extraction can be toggled when opening archives via keyboard in BZ, very useful.

In Entropy's favour it does RAR built-in, BZ requires downloading a command-line util from RAR themselves, Entropy automates this.

This is not a comparison, but I will emphasise that Robert, the Betterzip developer, is wonderfully communicative and helpful, always an important factor in choosing an app.

Have you enabled the password manager and checked the option "add all entered passwords to this list" in the preferences?

Thanks for your response.
Yes I'm already check and enable it as "Always try passwords"

I use BetterZip and Password Manager for a year, the Password Manager worked great and very useful for me.

Now, i did restore the old BetterZip (2.1.2) on my iMac and the Password Manager back to work again.

Macitbetter (developer) replied on 08 Mar 2012
This is strange. I haven't changed anything connected to the password manager in the latest update, but I'll look into it.

I tried to extract a pack of mp3 files and one of them was broken. Betterzip could not successfully extract all the other mp3 files and skipping the broken one, only a fraction of the mp3 files was unpacked successfully. "the unarchiver" was able to do the job perfectly instead. And a thousand times faster. it's a shame.

and the small icons are terrible, i would like too be able to see instantly where the zip files and so on are. something colorful or at least a bigger icon than a micro box in the middle.

Other than that, a great tool

A little bug that needs to be correct.

If I go to Preferences/File Associations and deselect "Java ZIP Archive" thans BetterZip isn't the default app to open simple ZIP archives while if I select "Java ZIP Archive" BetterZip is the default app to open either JAR archive than ZIP archive. You should separate JAR to ZIP.

Thanks.

JAR and ZIP are separated in BetterZip. However, if you have other archivers installed as well, the system's file type database can get confused. If you deselect Java archives in BetterZip, what other application is displayed that will handle those file types?

gd020188 replied on 12 Oct 2011
The problem is not with JAVA Archive, but with ZIP Archive and strangely is connected with the option for JAVA Archive.

I downloaded Unison of Panic Company to evaluate it: I downloaded a .ZIP Archive. Well:
• If I select "Java ZIP Archive" then the .ZIP Archive is opened by BetterZip
• If I deselect "Java ZIP Archive" the the .ZIP Archive is opened by Utility Compression of OS X Lion.

With .JAR Archive is all OK: if I select "Java ZIP Archive" the .JAR is opened by BetterZip and If deselect "Java ZIP Archive" then the .JAR is opened with Apple Java Script. The mysterious problem is with .ZIP Archive: the control of .ZIP Archive is determined by option about .JAR Archive!

Thanks.

It's not stuck, but Apple has to review every small update before accepting it into the App Store. This review process usually takes 1-2 weeks, sometimes even longer. I submit every version to Apple on the same day I release it here and on my server. Version 2.1.1 should be available in the App Store shortly.

I mostly use Springy to create cross-platform archives stripping Mac-specific data, and it makes that very easy by offering a service (and as of 1.2 you can hold down the option key if you don't want the default settings!. Most of the competition makes this simple task much too difficult (DropStuff and Spring, the two I used to use, are exceptions).

Being able to look inside archives is also very useful, of course, but I do that much less often.

I've never had any problems with the software and the developer was very kind about a few suggestions I made, and added them to version 1.2.

Easy to use, powerful, stable and well supported. Well worth the price.

I love the speed of BetterZip 2. I love the new features. But there is one feature that is missing! I really want to to abandon using BetterZip 1.8.3 but there is one giant problem with BetterZip 2 and it has no option to calculate file sizes in Base 10. For the love of God please add a preference setting to change from Base 10 to Base 2 or vice versa.

When I segment a file into 200 MB chunks I want the file to be 200 MBs in Base 10 which is the normal way for most file host services.

With BetterZip 2 my file host reports the BetterZip 2's 200 MB chunk as 195.31 MB.

Seriously this alone has stopped me from upgrading. I have better things to do than pull out a calculator to find a optimum MB range if I need to split up a backup before I upload to my MediaFire folder.

Just dang handy to be able to peek inside a zip.

A little annoyed they overwrote the app in the manner of an "update", with payable upgrade over the older version without clear warning. It basically left me back in demo mode, with the choice of pay-up, or waste time hunting for a backup to re-install.

After some initial problems with BetterZIP due to the absence by default of RAR compressor, I can say that actually this is the best archive utility for OS X.
I would like to thanks the developer to his patience about explaining me how to add the RAR compress.

When I opened some compressed files of specific archive format (tar, gz, bz2) under Mac OS X 10.6 10A432, the items in the compressed files didn't show up in the window of Betterzip 1.8.1, but this trouble didn't happen when I opened ZIP or RAR files.
