Really. I'm desperately looking for a file management tool that will help me organize my stuff easily, eliminate duplicates, cook meals and tell me that I am the most wonderful guy in the world.
In the meantime, searching a file is a PITA.
Spotlight is a powerful engine, but awful to use.
HoudahSpot is exactly what I need for searching stuff efficiently:
it's precise
it's fast
it's easy to use.
Like a Spotlight client you can access from anywhere.
Oh, and my file management issue? Well it's still there, but now I started tagging my files. Not very user friendly for the moment with HoudahSpot, so new files are tagged with Default Folder.

The Blitz search, which is a menu item like Spotlight, does not have a customizable search. It defaults to “names“ with fuzzy words and “text“ with fuzzy words. This cannot be changed.
The returned results with these fuzzy searches returns 100s if not 1000s of useless results.
If this Blitz search criteria could be altered then this would be light years ahead of Spotlight.
There are custom templates you can save and select from the Blitz search window but these templates include the fuzzy stuff also.

Try it. See if it fits your needs.
I also have a license for its little sister/brother: Tembo which I use much more frequently because of its less precise nature. Both apps are great!!!

I hate the interface that Apple has giving Spotlight, and Houdah has put a very clean and much more powerful front end on it.
One thing I just figured out is that HoudahSpot allows you to search by field in the xmp metadata of photos. If you tag your photos using any industry standard tool (Lightroom, Media Pro), the tags are written in a standard way--either into the image itself or into a "sidecar" file. With HoudahSpot you can search your computer for image files, without having to use cataloging software. It allows similar searching for tags in music files, but I haven't tried that feature.

You have to search for "keywords" to find Lightroom keywords. It is under "other..." in the pull-down menu. And, of course, you need to export metadata from Lightroom.

The next version of HoudahSpot will name windows.

Also could you add a way to rename files? This is something I do regularly and I am not aware of anyway to do this from within HoudahSpot. A way to easily add more tags would also be welcome. I often think of more tags that I want to add to a file after I already saved the file with tags.

I know I can drag a file of the application on there but not always have this at hand and it's cumbersome.

I installed version 3.0, launched HoudahSpot, got a dialog box telling me my licence is out of date, clicked the "Upgrade" button, a blank window flashed on the screen for a split-second and that was it. No HoudahSpot, no option to upgrade, and nothing in the developer's store on his website.
Fortunately I had a copy of version 2.7.4 so I was able to downgrade easily enough. Looks like I'll have to wait until there's a new version or the developer adds an upgrade option to his online store.

This is NOT working properly. The developer needs to fix this ASAP.
Thanks,

Please, please, please, tell me how I can properly upgrade!

1. Locate ~/Library/Application Support/HoudaSpot
2. Remove the license file from that folder - drag it to the desktop
3. Launch HoudaSpot 3.0. It will tell you the software requires a license and provide you a place to drag your license file.
4. Drag your OLD HoudaSpot license file there.
5. The program will tell you that you require an upgrade.
6. Click "Upgrade" and now the pop-up window will open up and stay open.
7. Proceed with your purchase.
I hope this helps somebody...
That is brilliant. Much easier than the procedure I had devised.
Best,

HoudahSpot 2.7.4 addresses the issue.
