This was a bug. HoudahSpot 3.5.1 should again work with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on PPC.

My Mac is a mess...
Really. I'm desperately looking for a file management tool that will help me organize my stuff easily, eliminate duplicates, cook meals and tell me that I am the most wonderful guy in the world.

In the meantime, searching a file is a PITA.
Spotlight is a powerful engine, but awful to use.
HoudahSpot is exactly what I need for searching stuff efficiently:
it's precise
it's fast
it's easy to use.

Like a Spotlight client you can access from anywhere.

Oh, and my file management issue? Well it's still there, but now I started tagging my files. Not very user friendly for the moment with HoudahSpot, so new files are tagged with Default Folder.

One feature that is painfully missing for me is to be able to set a list of preferred search locations, without scouting through the Finder each time.

You may achieve this by creating a Preferred Template

HoudaSpot has one glaring problem:
The Blitz search, which is a menu item like Spotlight, does not have a customizable search. It defaults to “names“ with fuzzy words and “text“ with fuzzy words. This cannot be changed.
The returned results with these fuzzy searches returns 100s if not 1000s of useless results.
If this Blitz search criteria could be altered then this would be light years ahead of Spotlight.
There are custom templates you can save and select from the Blitz search window but these templates include the fuzzy stuff also.

My favorite file search tool. All the search options and file search locations options are at my finger tips, and I can make search criterion sets that I can quickly select from.

HoudahSpot is a precise, pro level app.
Try it. See if it fits your needs.
I also have a license for its little sister/brother: Tembo which I use much more frequently because of its less precise nature. Both apps are great!!!

This is a short review, as you can download a trial to see if you like it.

I hate the interface that Apple has giving Spotlight, and Houdah has put a very clean and much more powerful front end on it.

One thing I just figured out is that HoudahSpot allows you to search by field in the xmp metadata of photos. If you tag your photos using any industry standard tool (Lightroom, Media Pro), the tags are written in a standard way--either into the image itself or into a "sidecar" file. With HoudahSpot you can search your computer for image files, without having to use cataloging software. It allows similar searching for tags in music files, but I haven't tried that feature.

It's good to know about HoudahSpot being able to search for tags in Lightroom but for some reason I can't get it to work. I assume that you are going to the tag field in HoudahSpot when searching for Lightroom tags? I tried this and I can't get it to work.

Hi Pik80

You have to search for "keywords" to find Lightroom keywords. It is under "other..." in the pull-down menu. And, of course, you need to export metadata from Lightroom.

You are going to Metadata > Export Keywords from within Lightroom? I tried that I am not getting anything. Hmm, well I suppose it's not that difficult to just launch Lightroom and do it straight from there. Since I can't get it to work I guess I will just keep doing it that way.

Switching between windows (under the window menu and the dock icon) would be a lot easier if it showed you some of the search criteria. Right now it just shows you the name of the application over and over for each window. This could be greatly improved if each window title provided you with useful information.

Great! It is so much easier to use now. Another small suggestion would be to somehow separate the tags visually perhaps by using commas. Right now it is a little hard to tell if a tag is several words long or just one word long. All the tags just blend together. Still this is a huge improvement over the last version!

Also could you add a way to rename files? This is something I do regularly and I am not aware of anyway to do this from within HoudahSpot. A way to easily add more tags would also be welcome. I often think of more tags that I want to add to a file after I already saved the file with tags.

like the software but would like to have a easy way to only search files by application in a way of a predictive drop down menu.

I know I can drag a file of the application on there but not always have this at hand and it's cumbersome.

I don't understand your question entirely. Can't you just type the name of the application type next to "content type"? Using a drop down menu to find the app you want to filter by would take a long time as most people have many apps which would make a long drop down list you would have to search though. Why not just type the name in the content type box?

After installing HoudahSpot 3.0.2, the HoudahSpot Helper process (Global Menu Item) no longer loaded at login. I tried trashing preferences, etc. and could not get it to run. When HoudahSpot.app is run, then the HoudahSpot Helper process is started. There is no way to add HoudahSpot Helper to the list of Login items. Similar problem a few updates past was solved very quickly. Great app. Any help welcome on this issue.

A caution about upgrading…

I installed version 3.0, launched HoudahSpot, got a dialog box telling me my licence is out of date, clicked the "Upgrade" button, a blank window flashed on the screen for a split-second and that was it. No HoudahSpot, no option to upgrade, and nothing in the developer's store on his website.

Fortunately I had a copy of version 2.7.4 so I was able to downgrade easily enough. Looks like I'll have to wait until there's a new version or the developer adds an upgrade option to his online store.

Were you connected to the internet? Is some setting preventing the software from opening a connection? I just ordered the upgrade through the software about half an hour ago and everything went fine. It even loaded the new license instantaneously, without having to wait for an email receipt.

Upgrades are sold from the store built into HoudahSpot 3.0. While this works for most users, I have had 2 reports of this failing so far. Please contact support for the manual upgrade procedure.

Despite what's been said, I'm having the same problem - launch the app, click the upgrade button, a screen flashes on the screen for a split second, then goes away.

This is NOT working properly. The developer needs to fix this ASAP.

Thanks,

OK - here's how to upgrade if you get the flashing dialog:

1. Locate ~/Library/Application Support/HoudaSpot
2. Remove the license file from that folder - drag it to the desktop
3. Launch HoudaSpot 3.0. It will tell you the software requires a license and provide you a place to drag your license file.
4. Drag your OLD HoudaSpot license file there.
5. The program will tell you that you require an upgrade.
6. Click "Upgrade" and now the pop-up window will open up and stay open.
7. Proceed with your purchase.

I hope this helps somebody...

When I upgraded to 2.7.3 from 2.7.1, the HoudahSpot Helper process (Global Menu Item) no longer loaded at login. I tried trashing preferences, etc. and could not get it to run. Reverted to 2.7.1 and restored old preferences and all was well again. Looks like a couple of similar reports on Dev's forum.
