Slothcam is the only fully customizable webcam viewer for Dashboard. Just type your favorite webcam image URL into the preferences (or use one of the built-in webcams) and watch your favorite webcam from the Apple Dashboard environment.
Slothcam features include:
The ability to add and delete cameras, each with their own refresh rate.
The ability to cycle between cameras when dashboard is activated, at a set interval, or by pressing the arrow keys.
There is also now an iOS version of SlothCam for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch! Check out the
The developer, Jackson Myers, after getting more details of the problem from me, sent a newer version to test. It fixed the problem I was having, and he'll release it as version 3.2
I'm raising the overall rating to 4 stars. I misses the 5-th star only because the configuration options on the back pane (and the UI*) aren't as self-explanatory as they could be, and "Reset Preferences" gives no warning that you'll lose all the URLs you've added to the list of webcams.
* For example, did you know that left- and right-arrow will advance the image to the previous/next camera on your list? I haven't seen it documented anywhere and only discovered it by chance!
Auto cycle isn't working for me (ver. 3.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.6). I see the caption bar turn red to indicate the image is updating, and it stays stuck there forever.
If you email me via my website, I can try to help you. Auto cycle has a 5 second timer by default. If it takes more than 5 seconds for a particular image to load you might not see it before the widget tries the next image. You can change that via a terminal command (email me) but not within the widget.
Also the expected behavior of auto cycle is for the widget to change cameras every 5 seconds while Dashboard is active. There's another feature called "cycle cameras" which instead only changes the camera when you enter dashboard so each time you enter dashboard you see a new cam. That might work better for you if the images you are trying to auto cycle take a long time to load.
I just wanted to let everybody know that there is now an iOS version of SlothCam for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. You can find it on the iTunes App Store, or find more info at http://www.jackson-myers.com
I Agree with the Developer. It is NOT his fault.EarthCam owns the Friday's WebCam and the Vegas one. But the Dashboard App works well so I was wrong and I am giving it 5Stars because it does what it is supposed to do!
OK I admit for what it is (Free) It is Ok but it is missing The cams I liked the best and that I think were popular with a lot of users, Friday's WebCam,Las Vegas wedding Chapel which had some interesting moments.I think that EarthCam as the author stated pulled out these. I guess they wanted MONEY!
What do you mean? I use it every day and you can still use lots of webcams, although the Webcams from EarthCam are now blocked (Earthcam doesn't want 3rd party programs to be able to view their webcams anymore). But there are literally millions of other webcams you can view, and Slothcam comes with a bunch of examples. I don't understand why you say it should be removed...
OK well tell me exactly how to get the TimesSquare and/or Fridays web cam which I watched every day as I am originally a New Yorker. How do I get the Las Vegas Wedding Chapel or the other Cams? The best was the Friday's web cam which a lot of users watched. But I don't see how to watch it or anything else of interest.
Jazzyguy - The Times Square webcam is run by a company called Earthcam, not me. Earthcam has decided that 3rd party programs like Slothcam are no longer allowed to view their webcams and they have blocked Slothcam and other 3rd party webcam programs. Earthcam also runs the vegas webcam. So you're out of luck unless you want to take it up with Earthcam.
Slothcam does however still work in general for the majority of webcams out there. And you're free to find and add your own cams, you're not limited to the built-in webcams. Those are just intended to be an example of what you can do with Slothcam. There are literally millions of webcams out there that work with slothcam so there is no reason to say it no longer works or it should be deleted from Macupdate.
The only way I could see that happening would be if the image file is large enough to take up that kind of bandwidth even though Slothcam is only requesting the image once per minute.
i cannot understand how does the widget use my internet traffic. i set one webcam to update every 1 minute but it comsumes 250kB every second it works...

I don't maintain any of the webcams, I just chose some default cams as examples of what you can do with SlothCam. I have replaced the Paris camera in the latest version with a new (different) webcam.
I live in Texas, and unfortunately I can't fly all the way to Paris to fix the Paris webcam. :)
