Penguin Power!1.2

21 January 2003

1980s-style platform arcade game.

Overview

Note: Penguin Power! is no longer under development, and it is no longer available for sale.

Penguin Power! is meant to bring back the fun of playing 'simple' 80's style platform games like Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, and Lode Runner etc. and to be very 'kid safe' at the same time. You play the part of Henrietta the penguin as she travels through dangerous ice caves in search of frozen fish. You must avoid obstacles to stay alive, collect ice cream bars for bonus points and solve the puzzles along the way to the frozen fish. The source code is available.

What's new in Penguin Power!

Version 1.2 fixes the following:
  • fixes the 'black screen' bug for those running quicktime 6.1
  • took out the closing 'quit' screen now that the udevgame contest is over

Really Crummy game. Slow with bad graphics and terrible music. If you want to play this game proberly then get your self a good book to read while the stupid penguin re-charges his jumping power(which takes for ever). And then It Crashed!!!

True, the gameplay is kind of slow by today's standards, but I still like it; the puzzles are fun to solve, the music is hummable, and come on, who doesn't love a penguin as the game hero? Plus, I've NEVER had Penguin Power crash on my system. One complaint: The jet pack DOES get annoying when you have to recharge all the time. And you only get a handful of lives, with no option to save. And the graphics are hardly top notch.

A really (as in REALLY) simple game, which you will hardly find addictive. Controls are more primitive than in Ice Climber of 1984, the screen refresh rate makes you cry before you even start to play (and yet it wants 84Mb of RAM by default) and it does indeed crash. Running under OS 9.1 on a G4/400 and pressing "l" crashes the game with the following error: "*** Runtime exception caught *** Line# : 1405 Code : currentlevel=file read int(fp) Error : Unexpected end of file." This is for debugging purposes, although I'm not sure it's worth it, the author might better try to write a new game instead, perhaps another attempt will be more successful.

Zac, what kind of system were you running on? If it crashed and I could find out why I'd love to fix the problem. Thanks, Jamie
