Post entries to weblog systems (was Kung-Log).

Overview

ecto is a feature-rich desktop blogging client for Mac OS X, supporting a wide range of weblog systems, such as Blogger, Blojsom, Drupal, MovableType, Nucleus, TypePad, WordPress, and more. ecto is the successor of the wildly popular Kung-Log. With ecto you can write and manage entries for your weblog(s). The advantage over using your weblog's control panel is that you can compose entries offline and use the extra features ecto offers, such as spellcheck, creating links, attachments, amazon support, Flickr integration via 1001 and much more. ecto is designed to make blogging much more easier and yet give the users as much power as possible to manage their weblogs.

Features:

  • support for multiple weblogs and servers (with easy-to-use Account Manager)
  • full local control of recently posted entries and drafts (with search function)
  • intuitive interface for creating and editing weblog entries
  • a Rich Text and an HTML editor with spellcheck and search/replace
  • syntax-coloring in the HTML editor
  • quick access menu with HTML tag templates and keyboard shortcuts (fully customizable)
  • support of all available remote control options of MovableType API (posting entries with continuation, summary, keywords, multiple categories, trackback, text-formatting, comment options)
  • advanced create-a-link dialog
  • easily change the posting date of entries
  • full-featured HTML-rendered preview of entries using Safari's WebKit
  • powerful file and media upload, incl. iPhoto import, via attachments
  • convert, scale images and create thumbnails
  • create poster movies or create thumbnails from movie frames
  • save settings on a per-blog basis
  • send notifications by email (with Address Book support)
  • insert details of the currently playing iTunes song in your entry
  • embedded debug console to troubleshoot server connections
  • extensive help documentation accessible from within ecto
  • hate the metal and icons? Set the window texture via the Preferences window and change icons with the supplied switcher!
  • works with NetNewsWire, PulpFiction, and Shrook
  • localized in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, and Japanese
  • support for del.icio.us, the social bookmarks manager
  • Services menu items to blog selected text (with extra features for Safari)
  • Flickr integration via 1001 app
  • Amazon Tool
  • and much much more!

Sad. I was looking at some reviews and Ecto was the best blog writer. But unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in 7 years. And the developer illumineX hasn't updated their website in 7 years as well. Their website no longer has a forum also. So I can assume that Ecto is unfortunately dead software.

Ecto is very much alive. Just received this note from the illumineX CEO who writes: "Yes, we've been doing a lot of work to ecto. We're going through the entire codebase, updating it to the modern Snow Leopard APIs so that it will be more stable and responsive. We've made about 2700 changes so far, and have a few more to go before we can release an update." Anxious to put this new ecto version to good use and know a lot of others are, too!

This software seems to have been abandoned. The current version is extremely buggy and unstable. Developer is AWOL. Too bad since it was good in the day but that day is gone.

This WAS a great app, before it was acquired and left to die by current developer. The website of the developer has not been updated in a long time, and I cannot figure out how to get support. The website forum is down, and the developer contact info I haven't been able to find. The biggest problem I have with this software, and it's HUGE, is that it keeps deleting parts of my posts! UNBELIEVABLE, but true. I discovered it when I went back to my latest entry, and found the last half was missing. At first I thought it was human error ... maybe I had deleted part by mistake. Thankfully I had a backup, and I replaced it. Then, I noticed after I saved the post, that the last half was missing again in the preview window! In HTML code, the last half was just not there. I pasted it back, in HTML mode this time, with all the proper tags. It did it again. Sometimes it would delete a longer or shorter portion. Sometimes, if I didn't edit the file, and clicked on and off the entry, it would reappear ... only to be partially deleted when I opened to edit. Then I looked back through old entries, which happen to include important and personal blog entries, that many of them were partially missing. It was like the app had shot holes in my life story for the last several years. Believe me, I was not happy. If you value your data, do not buy this version! You may never recover it. I am reporting on version 3.0.2. I am currently switching over to MacJournal, which unfortunately it not as elegant in some ways, but seems much more polished and is better supported.

I agree with LEOOFBORG. Have voiced our concerns for a year, frustrated about lack of response from developers. This is what happens when almost-great software is acquired and left to die. I wish there was Bring more competition out there, but unfortunately nothing beats Ecto, which is even more frustrating.

Ecto is a great blogging app on par with everything else out there, like MarsEdit, and I've used it for years and will continue to do so. It's a 4-5 star app with two BIG minuses. Two REALLY BIG minuses at this point: 1/ 3.0 hasn't been bugfixed in over a year. And there's a serious data loss bug that was reported pre-version three that was NEVER FIXED. See this forum entry: 'Draft Post Wiped (3.0b44)' at http://is.gd/6PSW6 I emailed them about this bug days ago and never heard back. And I can't get on the forums (below). 2/ Older Ecto users are not allowed on their forums to report issues, even tho' we're licensed users. And as others have said, all emails to support are ignored. Ecto's a great app, getting long in tooth, but if Illuminex doesn't work on support and bugfixes, it's going to be 'formerly' a great app really quick. 4-5 stars for the app as it is now. -1 for not fixing a serious, documented bug and another -1 for unresponsive support.

Just tried "MarsEdit" because it is a Unibin and let me tell you that it is nowhere close to ecto. It has no iPhoto integration, drag and drop of images did not work for me. After mere 5 minutes I went back to ecto. Please, please, please....released the UniBin version of Ecto, I love the app but if before my trial period ends there is no Unibin, my money will go to Mars ;)

This software makes blogging extremely simple and it works with a number of platforms. On top of it being great software, the support behind the product is top-notch and very personal. At $17.95 this software is a steal and well worth it. They are currently in the works of a Universal Binary edition but the current version works quite well under Rosetta.

i love ecto apart from one major gripe [which drives me mad!] - ecto will insist on rewriting HTML code when switching between the layout and HTML modes. this makes "tweaking" the layout of a blog in the HTML window a completely hit'n'miss affair. sometimes you'll write in a bit of HTML, switch to the layout window to find nothing has happened and then switch back to HTML mode to find what you just wrote has vanished. other times [and this happened to me only this morning] you'll write a [eg.] "div" tag round a couple of lines of text so you can apply a style to them, then switch back to layout mode to find ecto has moved where you inserted the tags so they now apply to the entire post [as a flick back into HTML mode reveals] please could the developer do something about this - [if i know enough code to want to make edits in HTML mode then assume i know what i'm doing and leave the code as i write it!] - as it's spoiling an otherwise great programme!

This review is also posted in my blog http://unpapier.com/blogs/index.php?title=software_review_blog_authoring_tool_ecto&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 Software Review: Blog authoring tool 'ecto' I saw this tool in ProBlogger. Wanted to give it a try. Let us see how this tool helps me. I am trying out this tool to see if it is worth the $18. I would like this tool to be remarkable if I want to pay any money for this tool. The tool has to do far more than what I can do with an eclipse plugin or a emacs macro. 1. You can find this tool at ecto. Inserting this link was at least very simple. It saved me a few key strokes with anchors. But I still have to cut and paste into a window. 2. The blog editor does spellchecking. By the way this spell checker complains about the word blog, that my friend is not so good in a blog authoring tool. My OS X textedit does this too. 3. Next I tried to create a amazon associate link using this tool. It takes a set of keywords and creates a list of books. I can then click on one and create a AWS link. However I would rather have this done some what automatically. In my Blogger blog (you can find it here) you see 2 such links, one titled Related Books and the other "Keywords Book Links". I have posted articles in this blog on how to generate this every time you post an article. The scripts work very well for multiple key words. So I do not consider ecto's feature remarkable. 4. ecto has a scripting option, where I can write a whole bunch of Applescript, Python, Perl etc and click on a button to have these run on them. So I could do the automated Book link insertion that I complained about in point 3 using this script option. But what is so remarkable about this? I did the same with my script on the blogger. Besides you can write a bunch of scripts that are run from command line. You can add a step so that the scripts can post as well. So not remarkable again. 5. I can add word count. So what? 6.I can ping blog directories, like technorati. It makes it easy to add technorati tags. I can add the tags using the scripts that I use at my command line or like my book link scripts. The technorati tags do look good and look very much like my book links. 7. Publishing this to blogger is just one click away. 8. This does handle well posting an article with javascript without the error message I talk about in my posting. 9. This tool does not support b2evolution (this blog's engine). So far I do not consider this a remarkable tool. Let me see if I change my mind before the trial period ends.

If you're using WordPress (and I'm sure the other blog formats ecto supports) this is a must have app. This makes posting sooooo much easier. The WYSIWYG editor is much better than any of the plug-ins available for WordPress, and it's a great way to keep a local copy of your blog. I haven't found any features that don't work as advertised. Excellent!

I can't say enough about this handy little application. It's a lifesaver for those of us who manage multiple blogs. A few features that I really like: it lets you build an archive of your Blogger posts, it gives you the built-in ability to generate technorati tags and copies your flickr tags. I don't buy a lot of software, but this one I slapped down the money gladly.

this version seems to have completely f***ked up text formatting in rich text mode. highlighting a piece of text and hitting 'apple+B' or 'apple+I' make s the text bold or italic but then takes a new line. hitting 'apple+B' or 'apple+I' before you type a word to toggle bold or italic on, then hitting it again after you've typed the word, to toggle it back off again, merely highlights the rest of the empty line ahead of what you are typing and then deselects it as you begin to type. pretty much defeats the purpose of the app, since it's almost as fast to just type HTML in the first place!

I am considering launching a small blog with Blogger, but I want to be able to keep my entries locally as well. I tested several blogging tools. Most were disappointing: didn't work properly, or experienced various problems. Finally, after noticing the many positive comments it had received, I tested ecto, which I had not even considered at the beginning. A delight and an ease of use, compared to the other ones! Posted without any trouble.

Ecto is the best of its kind. I don't mind the interface -- perhaps because I never used Kung-Log. The "HTML Tags" window, with the ability to set key-equivalents, is a real time-saver. The one feature I wish would be added to Ecto is a way of aborting commands to the server (in my case, Typepad) that for whatever reason have not gone through. I discussed this with the developer: it's true that the failure of a command to be transmitted to Typepad is my ISP's problem, not Ecto's. But Ecto should not bail out, as it regularly does, when an operation fails and Ecto eventually recognizes the failure. (Note: the bailouts seem to occur only when a posting fails, typically at the publication stage. Uploads that hang don't crash Ecto.) A browser that didn't let you cancel a failed request for a web page & that crashed five minutes after the failed request was sent would be unusable. Ecto is certainly usable, but I find myself quitting & re-launching it just to avoid losing work to crashes, which is inconvenient.

The interface is great (who said it's not? are you mad?) and it's very stable. 1.1.1 fixes the last remaining issue I was having with it not being able to post when my post had funky characters in it (control characters and whatnot). Okay, so after using the latest version for a while, I believe all of my "cluttered" interface issues have been solved. Some were fixed in later beta versions and others by learning the new interface options. Overall it seems very stable with MovableType and WordPress - I have not tried it on other blog software yet. No complaints; I have happily bought a license for this time saving software.

I've been using Kung-Log for a while now, it's one of my favorite programs. Ecto has its issues, and there's a few things I don't understand. -Why brushed metal? The latest version of the Switcher won't let you turn off metal at all, doing a great disservice to those of us who think brushed metal looks ugly. -How much is this going to cost? I loved Kung-Log not just because it was good, but because it was free; there are those of us out there who can't afford to buy more software. Especially if it also means buying constant upgrades. -The 'formatting' box for my MT blog doesn't seem to save its state. I usually have it set to "convert line breaks" but I have to re-set it every time I reload Ecto.

I donated to Kung-log because I use it day in and day out - It was a fantastic piece of software that was quick and easy to use. I have to say that my first impression of Ecto was very negative. The interface has taken a giant step backwards. The new "plastic buttons" (Safari-style) are very cumbersome looking in the toolbar compared to the icons you had before. The view/edit entry screen is very cluttered, it is hard to read all of the different rows of entries. I have several blogs and the default setting of the view/edit entry window shows every blog's post - even though I specifically choose one blog to edit. Finally, I primarily use my iBook G4, because I am on the go so much, and your app takes up most of the screen real-estate in 1024x768. All those new windows instead of the drawer style makes it feel *very* busy. It is an early beta.. so perhaps this sort of review is premature. But I was kinda of amazed that Ecto looked worse than Kung-Log.

VERY NICE. If you've got MT, try this out. Easy to set up; implements every option mt.cgi has for writing a new entry.
