Auto-post files to newsgroups with Thoth.

Overview

Ibis (pronounced eye-biss) is an AppleScript that will auto-post files to newsgroups using Thoth for OS X. Just drop a folder onto the Ibis icon to start posting the contents of that folder to your favorite newsgroup. You can also specify a folder by double-clicking on the Ibis icon. Panther compatible (not tested on Jaguar). Requires OS X 10.3+, Thoth, and the 24U Appearance OSAX (included).

What's new in Ibis

Version 3.0.2:
  • Final release with minor code and cosmetic changes
  • This will probably be the last release since Thoth (discontinued) hasn't been updated in quite some time

When my Osiris stopped working in 10.2 I was looking for something that could do what that program could: auto-post files to newsgroups. This works perfectly, quickly, and intuitively. I'd like to see even more features, and I've emailed the author. Very receptive.

I used Ibis for quite some time with general success. There's no doubt that the two-app approach has its drawbacks: there were certain types of posts that this combination just couldn't accomplish. With development of Ibis apparently at an end and Thoth getting creakier as OS revisions progress, I fell it's appropriate to call attention to "Cocoa NewsPost", available here, which works flawlessly with posts of all kinds. I have nad excellent results from it. Ratings posted here are for Ibis.

What does "Ibis" have to do with Egyptian mythology? I think we mean "Isis", but that name may be taken. Ibis is a bird, and not mythological at all... Maybe this means autoposting is for the birds.

Better to keep quiet and have people think you are ignorant than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48: "Ibis \I"bis\, n. [L. ibis, Gr. ?; of Egyptian origin.] (Zool.) Any bird of the genus Ibis and several allied genera, of the family Ibid[ae], inhabiting both the Old World and the New. Numerous species are known. They are large, wading birds, having a long, curved beak, and feed largely on reptiles. Note: The sacred ibis of the ancient Egyptians (Ibis aethiopica) has the head and neck black, without feathers. The plumage of the body and wings is white, except the tertiaries, which are lengthened and form a dark purple plume. In ancient times this bird was extensively domesticated in Egypt." Sacred. As in 'Egyptian mythology'.

I also put the description of the name in the readme for any inquisitive minds. Thanks for even more elaborate clarification. -Developer
