ntop is a network traffic probe that shows the network usage, similar to what the popular top Unix command does. ntop is based on libpcap.
What's New
Version 5.0:
  • Beside bug fixes and general improvements, in this release we redesigned the ntop engine, that up to version 4.x was a bit cumbersome.
  • We now have a layer 2 (MAC Address) and layer 3 (IP address) so that the old -o flag is no longer used.
  • Sessions are now enabled by default, as they are used widely in ntop.
  • We update netflow collection supporting new flow templates and circumventing better some implementation flows of probes embedded on hardware devices.
  • Support of nDPI that allows ntop to know the real protocol, regardless of the port being used to exchange data. To date more than 140 protocols are supported, and this number will grow in the near future.
  • We decided to begin to redesign the GUI, adding new graphs that can better represent facts using a simple and clean design.

Can’t wait to try this (if it’s ever offered as a binary).

BTW, the ntop 2.2 link doesn’t work.

This is only source code, and there are dependencies you have to build as well. The easiest way to install this would be through the MacPorts package manager, although right now, the latest version it has is 3.3.

This package requires rrdtool which hasn't been ported to MacOS X yet. If you build this application, you'll have to figure out how to compile rrdtool by hand.

Extremely comprehensive reporting, and very useful stats about network traffic. Impressive.

It would be helpful to have some more detailed instructions on how to set up some of the features, but trial and error can get results anyway, and it is free.

Sounds to me like you just don't know what to do. Don't blame the app due to your lack of knowledge. I've used this for YEARS in the Linux and UNIX world. Its great. If you have no idea what ./configure is, then don't waste your time.
