Cute application that times your tea brewing.

Overview

Cuppa is a cute application to time your cup of tea as it steeps. Tired of leaving your tea too long, to become bitter and cold, or drinking it too soon and not appreciating its full potential? Then this utility is for you!

Use it right from the dock: just right-click or command-click on the little teacup, and select the beverage you wish to brew. You'll see a tea bag appear in the cup, and gradually darken as the tea steeps. When the tea is done the teacup will bounce and make a sound

Features:
  • All functionality available from the Dock menu.
  • Customize the beverage list and steeping times.
  • Customize the brew complete notification.
  • Also great for timing French press coffee and 2-minute noodles!
  • Full Cocoa source code available.

What's new in Cuppa

Version 1.8.4:
New Feature:
  • Option to speak alerts using speech synthesizer.
Other Improvements:
  • Universal 2 binary compatible with Intel and Apple Silicon.
  • Big Sur-style app icon.

I can't remember how many years I've been using this nice timer (may be 10?), but it's been every morning! :-) My only regret is that it doesn't have an option to launch the countdown when I fire the app — as I always drink the same tea in the morning... :-D I've suggested the idea to the dev many years ago. May be someday... :-)

I hadn't reviewed v1.8.3 but Nathan had added the option to auto-run your first favourite timer at launch! Now v1.8.4, it's nice to see this great little app ready for the next decade! :-)

Waow! Great responsiveness from the dev! Thanks! (wish it would be the same for high priced softwares... ;-))

Cuppa no longer seems to work with Snow Leopard. I reverted back to 1.7. No countdown and the elapsed time freezes to one second more than the chosen countdown. Also, no teabag shows in the Dock.

Simple, effective, and charming tea timer. Does what it does perfectly. So many other timers are overloaded with useless and unneeded features and tacky interfaces. Cuppa has a great icon and, by far, the best "brewing complete" alert/alarm sound of any tea timer out there.

I have just noticed that on cuppa 1.7, the preference "Notify via Growl" is grayed out. Using growl 2.0. I dont know when it started, as i havent enabled the option before. I wonder how I can enable it?

Still my preferred quick timer, very easy to use (right click on dock icon and select one of your preset times to countdown), or enter a custom time. Yeah!

Very nice. I don't use it for brewing tea, but I do use the countdown timer when I'm downstairs on the Mac and the sausage rolls in the oven upstairs need to be checked in 20 minutes.

Sweet, reliable, been using for years—you can make custom timers too. Thanks, dev!

Great app! I used to use KTeatime in linux, and Cuppa is the only app that does the same thing on the mac! The best app for quick countdowns! (you can define your own presets too!)

Cuppa is a great little niche app that does one thing well. I use it every day to ensure a perfectly brewed cup of tea. --

Cuppa still works on Snow Leopard (that is, it will quietly count down, beep as the timer approaches zero and pop up a dialog that brewing is done). But... 1) It now takes a ctrl-click to gain quick access to the timers. Holding down the cursor over the dock icon only pops up the new generic Quit/Hide/Options that all apps in the dock now have. Thanks a bunch for supplanting Cuppa's easy access, 10.6. 2) The dock timer no longer displays. It's just a bare image of a cup, regardless of whatever timer may or may not be set and counting down at that moment.

this is a great little app! i think you should make a loose leaf option as tea fanatics would most likely be into loose leaf than teabag. maybe one of those bodum teapots would be cool. i think i'll probably end up making an icon myself if i don't see it happen. great app though (but tea snobs who would've probably looked for this don't usually use bags).

Nice app, but (not looking a gift horse in the mouth) but how accurate is it? Don't different teas and even tea bags have different optimum brewing/steeping times? I seem to recall there are tea sites deep into this. Any way to make future versions of Cuppa adjustable according to tea and brand? A fun project and thanks. JimWG

A very nice and sweet app. Works like a charm. The only thing is that I need to move my computer closer to the kitchen or estimate and add the time it will take me to run and switch the app on :-) This might be why some fridges have a TLC screen in the door!

AHA! Version 1.3 comes through with FLYING colors! Thanks for incorporating so many of the user requests in terms of notification! One teeny enhancement request: is there a way for Cuppa to bring itself to the front of other apps when the timer ends? As it stands, the notification dialog pops up behind other windows if I'm working on something else. But thank you thank you thank you for all the progress you've made! : )

Nice app, but I must request a vital feature: "Tea Connoisseur Mode", in which the cup and the bag are replaced by a teapot and tea leaves, and phraseology changes accordingly. The dock icon could show tea brewing inside a glass teapot and a small progress bar or countdown.

Yeah, I'm in the "too easy to miss" camp, too. If the dock icon could display a countdown, and/or the cup could bounce continuously until I reset it, I'd be much less afraid of drinking tar.... ; ) Also, while I'm at it, it would be nice to be able to re-order the tea types in the prefs list. Sort 'em alphabetically, or just drag them to change the order--something like that. : )

It works perfectly on my 10.3.2 - a great addition to my dock :) Could be nice with a display of how long is left. Perhaps just put it as a hint or an inactive item in the menu.

IT is Adorable and will come in handy with this the 1st day of winter in No Cal, however, I would like to see an additional feature added of options for the clanging and bouncing. I am ADHD and when I am hyper focused on a project I am sure I will miss it! It would be cool if there was on option to clang 1-3 times and an Option for the teacup to Transparently Jump and cover the whole screen and then Jump right back down into the cup with the pouring action--like when you close pages in OSX. what do you guys and gals think??
