Replacement for Apple Console app.

Overview

BetterConsole is an application that you can use to display messages written to the console, or any sort of log file. It makes the Console application that comes with Mac OS X look like a sissy. Although Apple's console has come a long way since it was part of the Workspace (e.g., BetterConsole is no longer 25 times faster), it still leaves much to be desired. Features include:
  • Follows multiple files, including rotating log files.
  • Better control of hide/show options.
  • Supports filter rules for ignoring unwanted output.
  • User selectable font.

What's new in BetterConsole

Version 4.0:
  • Completely did away with .better files.
  • Added the ability to hide window controls. With a transparent background, this gives the ability to do "desktop" consoles that some people like. We never have enough desktop visible for that sort of thing, but we stuck it in here anyway.
  • Revamped the document setting inspector.
  • Removed window transparency setting.
  • Added a File menu item to open commonly used user and system log files.
  • Added a Console menu.
  • Added the ability to update the Dock when there is log activity.
  • Added an option to not make the window visible on output.
  • Changed the way window hiding works so that the
  • Window menu now lists even non-visible consoles. Now supports .log files directly. (Requested by Gregg V. Carroll)
  • Show entire log file when you begin following it. (Requested by Jason Hill)
  • Minor icon tweak.
  • Other miscellaneous changes.

This app wouldnt do anything until i clicked clear on the first window. after that it agreed to open log files heh. not a bad little program, certainly has more options than the standard console (although you have to show info instead of using the preferences menu item).

Heh, you gotta bugfix BetterConsole a bit. I got it to work after messing a bit with it. By using Apple's Console.app, I found a few problems, which stops BetterConsole from showing output. -[NSTextView setFont:]: nil NSFont given. First message I got. I clicked (incorrectly) on the set color toolbar button. -[ConsoleDocument windowChangeColor:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x18b6f0 (This happens when I try to set the text color) Assertion failure in -[NSColorWell setColor:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949.54/AppKit.subproj/NSColorWell.m:496 13/11-09 07:52:54 BetterConsole[2592] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: aColor != nil' invoked observer method: '*** -[ConsoleDocument windowDidBecomeMain:]' observer: 0x158870 notification name: 'NSWindowDidBecomeMainNotification' -Anyway, it's working now, and seems to be great so far. :)
