EV Nova1.1.1

22 December 2011

Third (and only OS X version) game in the Escape Velocity series.

Overview

Note: EV Nova is no longer under development, and it is no longer available for download.

In EV Nova (the "three-quel" to Escape Velocity), the developers are working on a huge update to the game -- it's been rewritten so that the graphics engine is 16 bit, handles transparencies, hue tinting, thruster and laser "glowing", and a number of other really cool features. The graphics for the static scenes are all 32 bits of love, and there are QuickTime movies for many aspects of the game (don't worry, they augment the game, the developers aren't turning the game into an "interactive novel" or anything silly like that).

What's new in EV Nova

Version 1.1.1:
  • Pilot files are saved atomically, Pilot-tmp file is created and moved in place after successful save
  • Fixed Register EV Nova menu item not working
  • Now Requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later
  • Other bug fixes & enhancements

Still one of my favorite games of all time. I'd love to see an iPhone port.

Fine game, well written. Bought it years ago. One thing I don't understand is why the 1.1.1 update was necessary. I had no problems with registration, pilot files were saved automatically anyway. But I'm still using Mac OS 10.4 on my PowerBook (10.5 on my G5), so I'm not updating this time.

Why, oh why is the game still played in such a small window? If it were truly full screen, I'd buy this new version in a flash. If I'm missing something here, please let me know! TIA

Here is the only digital game I have ever bought that has not faded away --- Bought it 10ish years ago and still find it "new" due to the various ways you can play it. The enhancements link opens the door to minor and major changes to freshen it.

Version 1.1 is on their website: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/ It's a universal binary .app package. Note that the "Nova Files" folder is now embedded within the app. It's amazing to see someone at Ambrosia put some time into EV Nova so many years after its release. Thanks for the effort, guys. If you ever change your minds about reviving the EV "franchise," I have little doubt there will be a following.

Worth every last sent I spent. I've been playing this game for over three years now and although some of it gets boring, there are always new plugs to try and experiment with. 10 out of 10.

Nova is even better than Override and the original. It has more in-depth story lines, more ships, missions, better visuals than any other game that I have seen in the genre and has plenty of plug-ins to enhance gameplay. Great game.

A truly amazing feet, even from the very start of the series. It gives amazingly addictive gameplay, unlinear and compelling story lines (of which there are many), easy to manipulate controls, and custumization that blows away the best of mech games. Another cool feature is the whole plugin bit, were for free you can change the entire universe of the game...endlessly (as long as there are people to make them). Replay factor? Infinite. How many things can you do in this game? You can do simple missions, like delivering things here and that. You can attack disable and board other vessels (stealing everything they have and maybe even capturing their ship if you're lucky). you can join one of the many goverments either being a hero or a villain, or if you wanted you could be a cargo shipper, raking in huge amounts of money. The music could do a little work, maybe some epic peices in the backround durring some of the missions? But who would notice it anyways when you are warring with a screen full of ships. Graphically this game is great for what it is. The polygon ships do wonders for the atmosphere, and all the weaponry effects are very cool. The frame rate bearly ever drops below 30, leaving for a very smooth gaming experience. For a mere 30$, how could you not get this game, even if just to support the crew that took 75000 man hours to create you this masterpiece.

Simply one of the most addictive games out there. The completely un-linear gameplay sucks you in from the first moments.

A REALLY cool game... The one thing I didn't like was the shareware enforcer, capain Hector. Unless you have a great ship, then you're toast after 30 days...

Whoosh. That's what I thought when I first played EV Nova. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is unimaginable. It is the best game I have ever played. The only two things i'd like to add would be background music and online play. I would recommend getting this game. Ambrosia has done it again. With many weapons, ships, and missions to choose from, this is an easy candidate for the best game on a mac.

Ambrosia rocks! Coolest strategy game on Earth. All of the EV trilogy games are fantastic(Override was the worst in my opinion). Buy it. It doesn't cost much and if you hate Captain Hector as much as I do that's all you can do to kill him. I just wish they would make an internet play option. Then it would be the best game of all time...

Great game that spans many genre's. Not just an arcade space battle game, or an RPG but does include many feature of each. Lots and Lots of add-ons makes the game replay for the nth time.

OK, I've been playing EV since it came out. I grew up with the Confederacy and the Rebellion. I joined the pirates and raided countless ships. I installed add-on after add-on to make it even better. Then EV Override came out. I was thrilled. I spent the first week sleepless and absorbing all the new features, the new races, and the new ships and weapons. Now that Nova is out, the ONLY reason I am here writing this review is because I'm downloading the patch. Ahhh! There's my coffee!

According to the www.macupdate.com capsule review, there are "QuickTime movies for many aspects of the game". I haven't seen any, barring the stupid little 5-second races in gambling. Oh, and another hurrah. Register now, or I'll beat you with rocks until you bleed and then disembowel you with a spoon and whip you with your own intestines!

I would of expected more, but I guess they left the vast amount of enable feature untouch for the users to use for plug ins, I mean they could of expand it alot more, but the playability is good and the rich story plotline.

The Escape Velocity shareware series from Ambrosia have been some of the most innovative and exciting games out there. You may pick this up and decide that it's just another 'space game', but don't reject it until you try the Polaris or Vell-os strings. EV Nova is the third game in an incredibly immersive series, and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind wasting hundreds of hours staring at their computer screen. Try to beat all 6 major strings in a day...

Great shareware title, the best EV to date. Its user expandable via plug-ins and well worth the 80 MB download. This game fuses many genres so it should appeal to most people who enjoy free playing and space combat.
