LiveCode Community Edition overview

LiveCode (was Revolution Media) enables better, easier and faster software construction for everyone. Our motto is "Everyone can Create Apps".

LiveCode is ideal for complete beginners who have never written a line of code before. Its easy English-like language is quick to learn and more memorable than any traditional programming language. Thats why LiveCode is loved by content experts, artists, and educators who need to create interactive content but have no desire to become programmers.

But don't be fooled by simplicity. LiveCode's powerful, flexible feature set is used by professional developers creating mobile apps, shrink wrapped commercial software, business process automation tools, in-house utilities and working in enterprise teams on real-time and mission critical applications. LiveCode's high productivity environment is in indispensable tool for professionals under pressure to deliver more with tight budgets.

Top Benefits
  • Up to 10x more productive than traditional development systems.
  • Flexible platform creates applications that run on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux and Server
  • From rich mobile applications to powerful enterprise software solutions, designed for any skill-set, platform, project or budget
  • Deliver dramatically more with less - less time, less effort, ideal for tight budgets

Powerful Toolset
One of the unique benefits of LiveCode is its iterative workflow. Projects are edited dynamically with changes happening in real time. There is no compile-run-edit-debug cycle that takes so much time with traditional development tools. LiveCode is also ideal for using agile development to adapt quickly to changing requirements.

  • Drag and drop user interface builder
  • Run and edit live
  • Integrated visual debugger
  • Edit and debug on all supported platforms
  • Create single-file standalone executables with a single click
  • Access databases, powerful data presentation options
  • Create native or custom interfaces for all platforms
  • Edit server scripts directly on the server
  • Remote visual debugger for server scripting

Thanks for letting us know about Revolution's lack of an update policy. I was about to purchase the latest Mac Sale, which included RevStudio, as its anchor product, but your review, along with others, that pointed out the lack of an upgrade path, has saved me the money. It appears that by including RevStudio as part of Mac Sale, at a cheap price, they are trying to hook users on the product and then gouge them on the upgrade, since there is no upgrade path or discounts. Not cool. That's why I like the MacUpdate reviews. Not only do they turn me on to good products, but as in this case, they save me money on others that have significant issues.

The Runtime Revolution folks seem to have been hard at work - and it shows. Not only is version 3 a major and worthwhile upgrade, but also: 1) the developers have been sistematically squashing bugs and increasing the feature set of the application. 2) the Revolution community has been nurtured by the makers, and the happiness shows - at least for a newbie like me. It seems incredibly active, welcoming and helpful, and the developers participate actively in it. 3) the developers have listened to customers complaints about cost, and have brough the price down. I admit, that I had given up on Revolution - 'round about version 2 - but this new version 3 made me want to use it again. I think now I don't really have an reasonable excuse not to renew my old license...

I've been using Runtime Revolution for a year now and am tremendously impressed with the quality of this product, especially version 3.0, which includes substantial improvements to the script editor. Admittedly, I get frustrated once in awhile, but it always turns out to have been my own fault. You'll need to spend a day or so getting used to its structure and idiosyncrasies, but after that its flexibility and ease of use is phenomenal, and its speed is unbelievable. The company is very responsive to bug reports. Highly recommended!

I just purchased 2.8.1 about 4 months ago from Runtime. I like the software but this is getting ridicules. You buy something and 2 months later or so here comes the next wiz bang piece of software with no free upgrades to those that just purchased the old version. We, as consumers need to send a message to all the companies that have come up with this new marketing plan and let them know that the WELL will run dry if they keep thinking that their customer base is made of money. Really and truly Fedup

I absolutely refuse to upgrade to version 2.9 from 2.8.1. I paid a lot of money for this older version, which has been buggy as hell with NO updates. Now they want me to pay $199 to upgrade to this new version. I don't think so... I am done with this company and their bloody ridiculous upgrade policy.

Revolution continues its prohibitively expensive update policy. Having updated to Revolution Studio in Feb 2006 for £139 because further support for DreamCard was discontinued at that point, I now find that I am asked to pay £199 for the update to version 2.7.2. Of course, the £199 also buys me any additional upgrades that Revolution may make in the following year. Such a policy makes me long for HyperCard for OS X, a longing never to be fulfilled.

I like very much "Runtime Revolution" but there are many bugs about characters transcoding between Windows, Mac OS X and Linux applications... Actually, I didn't find solutions to make a *real* crossplateform software... :-( Please, have a look very soon for a better management of clipboard. :-)

Revolution is good, but a bit unstable and buggy. Comes closest to old HyperCard in many ways. I will stick to REALbasic until something even closer to old HyperCard becomes available. Revolution's upgrade policy or lack thereof makes it a very expensive tool for users and a great cash cow for the developer. I couldn't even get a minor upgrade without rebuying it!!! Worst upgrade policy I've seen. Won't buy the product ever again unless they do something more reasonable.

Nice and easy. If you used HyperCard and are sad that it only runs in Classic mode... then you should rush to download this. Not only does it open your HyperCard stacks, but it offers a great deal more. You can use the easy HyperTalk here, too. This means easier to develop than Basic, but Revolution can build real applications. It's surprisingly fast for a scripting environment. The only criticism I have is a cluttered interface...
