TransparentDock2.3.9

22 October 2006

Makes the OS X Dock transparent; for OS X 10.2-10.4.

Overview

TransparentDock is an application that allows customization of the Mac OS X dock. The transparency level of the dock is fully adjustable, from fully transparent to fully opaque, or somewhere in between. An assortment of options are available to enhance the appearance & functionality of the dock, and each can be applied independently, or combined into a theme. A fully customizable palette allows saving & switching between an unlimited number of custom dock themes. As always, built-in reset options allow returning the dock to its original state.

Doesn't work with 10.4.10!! Can't apply any settings. Before it worked fine. To me the most important thing was the ability to make the finder icon removable…

I had the same problem too! Use this app: "cleardock" (http://www.coolosxapps.net/2007/06/18/cleardock-free-dock-utility/). It's a good substitute for "Transparent Dock" while waiting for the update!

Nix that...not TD's fault...it's Safari 3 beta's fault. Is there any way to get my Transparent Dock back? I reinstalled the 10.4.9 update with no results...

This wee app has always been terrific! Why Mac doesn't give us options to make these changes to our dock in the actual 'Dock Preferences' I really don't know... I have made use of TranspDock on all my Macs over the last however many years BUT please note - there is still no MacOS Intel compatible version available. You mention that "Verison 2.3.9 updated for compatibility with Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8" but do not state that it is for PowerPC only, and not the Intel Macs... Come on Free Range® and do the homework so we can have our beloved Transparent Dock once again. Long live transparent docks! (take note Apple!)

10.4.9 once again has broken this great little app! Here is hoping they find a quick fix - I really don't like doing without this one! I still am surprised that Apple hasn't allowed us to make the dock background transparent yet themselves?!!!!

I have been waiting for a long time for the universal version of this terriffic app. I really do miss it! I have used it for years now and it was always the first app I updated when I upgraded software. Please get an Intel happy version out ASAP. If the developer doesn't want to do it maybe Apple could buy him out and offer it as part of Leopard. It is a GREAT app.

TD 2.3.8 & OS 10.4.8 I just noticed it doesn't work on my powerbook, which I did a combo update on, but it still works on my g5, which I did the regular "software update" on. I nearly always do combo updates so I never noticed this. bb

Excellent! Now I can have my transparent background back, just the way it should be. Maybe Apple will get a clue about this one day, that background just looks silly after you've used the dock without a background. My only problem with TransparentDock is that the developer designed it in such a way that he needs to make a release each time apple updates the OS. I understand this is to keep us from messing up our systems, but that's what backing up is for. Would be nice if we could over-ride this hand-holding.

best app for the dock. I don't know why Apple doesn't just buy them out and include this feature on their OS by default. It's simply the best. Be wary of Clear Dock as it is made by Unsanity. Unsanity utilizes APE (Application Enhancer) which has proven buggy for me at times. They also install something called Smart Crash Reports without your knowledge. It's nothing major, but i don't like things being installed behind my back.

Geez! Why does it take so long after an OS X upgrade for Free Range to fix this app? Don't you guy(s) get the OS X development feeds so you can fix things prior to launch of an upgrade especially when folks are doling out their cash? Maybe FREE Range should make this a FREE app. PS: ClearDock-free-not as feature rich but always works PSS-This has been requested before but while you're at it, could you make it possible to let a USER account enable the app? Or at least allow admin access to enable while in a user's account?

It's wonderful that the developer always releases an updated version just before an update to OSX. 10.4.1 version came out about 3 or 4 days before 10.4.2 was released. Now here we are on the brink of 10.4.3.

App (still) hangs when trying to change dock while in a user account (vs. admin account). This seems to be mentioned in previous posts so a fix would be nice dev. The workaround is to change settings while in the admin account and then copy the preference folder to the user account - pain : (

How did you reset the Dock? TransparentDock doesn't like my backup, probably because it was made when I still had 10.4.1 installed. Since I installed 10.4.2, Solarian II crashes the Dock (after it goes to fullscreen mode). Thankfully, this seems to be the only odd behavior exhibited by my Dock since 10.4.2 broke TransparentDock. I hope this app gets updated soon.

Solution to lost contextual options: The dock changed with TD does not contain foreign localisations. At least on a german system that is true. In the package contents of the Dock.app (it lies in /System/Library/CoreServices/) you find a folder named "your language.lproj" and that is empty. You can copy the files missing in that folder from the backup of your dock that you made with TD. I recommend to substitute the complete ".lproj"-folder. If you made no backup, you can use Pacifist to install the localized files again.

This utility seems to customize every single aspect of Dock.app not possible with any tool currently out there. There is one problem and it seems to leave Dock.app's permissions in disarray after running it. Could it be that it applies the changes without changing them back? I still give it 5 stars even though of that little problem. If you give an app 5 stars yet it has a little problem, then it must be good, yes?

I'm running 10.2.8 and when I first tried this program I loved it, but after a few days my dock got screwed up. When I open the application it doesn't do anything for a few seconds, flashes a dialog box saying something about an error, asking me to fix it, then quits without giving me enough time to read the message. I finally got my dock to work again thanks to the backup, but even after reinstalling, I still can't get TransparentDock to work.

excellent program.. since it alters the app its effects are permanent and it doesnt use up power. In addition, it has been stable with OSX through 10.2.6, however it is no longer compatible with 10.2.8. updating to 10.2.8 will remove color and transparency settings from the dock, attempting to mod the dock using the program again results in a nonfunctional dock. behaviors i noticed before launching the backup copy of the dock on 10.2.8 were: -nonfunctional/nonexistent dock -first itunes then safari crashed -desktops set to cycle once a minute were cycling once every 3-5 seconds. note: launching the backup copy of the dock immediately restored stability, however i miss my darker, richer dock with purdy colors =P~ and have already sent in my email offering royalties for a prompt update
