Sleep Aid overview

Sleep Aid works by analyzing sleep event data, system sleep settings and running applications.

Sleep data is presented in a familiar calendar style interface, which allows customers to quickly and easily identify.

  • When the Mac was pretending to be asleep.
  • When the Mac suffered Unusual Insomnia, Excessive Insomnia and Long Insomnia.
  • When the Mac awakes directly after being sent to sleep.
  • When the Mac was woken by Notifications, Bluetooth, Siri and others.
  • When Sleep Settings, Sleep Aid or the macOS was changed. Selecting a sleep event in the calendar reveals details about the event and potential suggestions in the sidebar.

In addition, Sleep Aid also contains the following functions.

Overview Panel. Sleep Aid will list all potential problems, insomnia reasons, screen wake reasons and a daily insomnia chart.

Insomnia Activity. Select an insomnia event in the calendar, and Sleep Aid will reveal which apps or services kept the Mac awake and for how long.

Event Comparison. Double clicking an event in the calendar, opens it in a separate window, allow for two or more events to be compared.

Take Note. Customers can add their own notes to the calendar, helping to diagnose the cause of difficult sleep problems.

Sleep Check. Enables customers to quickly identify system settings or applications that are preventing the Mac from falling asleep. Settings can be fixed directly from the "Sleep Check" window.

Better Sleep Controller. A custom built controller inside of Sleep Aid, allowing system services to be disabled when the screen goes off, and re-enabled when it comes back on.

Disable Bluetooth during Sleep. Sleep Aid can switch off Bluetooth when the Mac goes to sleep, preventing Bluetooth devices from waking the Mac, devices such as headphones, mice, tracking gadgets and others. Sleep Aid then re-enables Bluetooth on wake.

Sleep Settings. A single window that allows control of System Sleep Settings and "Better Sleep Controller" settings, which can help reduce insomnia or solve sleep troubles.

Efficient Updates. When updating, Sleep Aid will only download the application for the current Mac, instead of downloading a whole universal binary again. This saves time, electricity and storage space.

What’s new in version 1.3

Updated on Jul 26 2023

  • Launch Sleep Aid on Login to Mac.
  • Delay Background Tasks can reduce wakeups on M1 (not M1 Pro or M1 Max) without causing Mac to then wake excessively.
  • New layout of preventing sleep apps, allows more apps to be listed at one time.
  • New Error Reporter.
  • A "Use newer Sleep Tracker" checkbox to the "Sleep History" section of the preferences. This new tracker appears to be more reliable, but it's still in testing.
  • Re-written Quick Sleep Check in the status item window, now much faster.
  • Re-written Sleep Check window to use newer more optimized preventing sleep checker.
  • Re-written animation wrapper, reducing chances of error dialogs crashing for some.
  • Now only asks if you really want to Quit Sleep Aid when selecting Quit from the file menu, this should help reduce sleep aid thinking it crashed because the macOS forced it to quit while it was waiting customer input.
  • Made a change that will hopefully help reduce the crashes when checking to see if Sleep Aid is set to launch on login.
  • Improved the ordinal day handling in the calendar for date formats that show the year before the day.
  • Now has a built-in customer initiated logging mode to try to capture more information for some of the harder to track down errors.
  • Fixed a regression on Mac OS X 10.13.6.
  • Fixed a crash with the status item on macOS 12.6.5.
  • Working on a crash when ending sleep tracking for some customers.
  • Fixed a bug from the Sleep Status window that would open the old Sleep Check.
  • Fixed a weird visual glitch with the Preferences window, when it may flicker before showing.
  • Now uses Apple Script for controlling login items on OSes lower than Ventura.

This is, for me, a surprisingly comprehensive app. Well-designed, organized and even pretty. I was initially wondering why I would need this app, because my presumption was that power and sleep management on the Mac is so much better than on the PC (which it is, but that's a far cry from saying it's perfect). I now have a much greater understanding of what's going on under the hood of my Mac, and the only drawback is that I spend a lot of time looking up the descriptions of processes I didn't know were there. The built-in help is useful and detailed, and support from the company is prompt and courteous.
